Frozen continent! Europe's rivers, lakes and even seas are iced over ...
Mail Online ^ | 13th February 2012 | DAILY MAIL REPORTER

You would be forgiven for thinking these stunning vistas lay deep in the heart of Antarctica.

But they are, in fact, what has become of the European landscape as temperatures plummet to nearly -40C - the coldest snap in decades.

Rivers, lakes, beaches and even seas have been iced over by a Siberian freeze, creating some incredible sights, but also more tales of tragedy.

...

But in southern Kosovo, nine people were killed when an avalanche hit the village of Restelica, officials said on Sunday, adding to more than 500 killed in snow and bitter cold across the Continent in the past two weeks.

In Poland, the interior ministry said 20 people had died in the past 24 hours because of the freezing weather, bringing the toll there so far this year to at least 100.

Don’t worry, I’m sure this will be blamed on the U.S. and the 0bama Administration will find a way that we’ll pay for any of the damages of the bitter, global-warming induced, cold weather.

So much for global warming, though it does help to prevent you from freezing your a$$ off during those brutally cold winters.

Boy, that Global Warming is really something.

I guess you didn't get the memo. when things started cooling off they changed it to "Climate Change" - which allows them to say that ANY change in the weather is a result of made-made CO2 emissions.

If I remember High School geography right, which is unlikely, from Bucharest to Madrid is about 2800 miles.

It's ALL Southern Europe.

40 below is about the same whether C or F.

That's some extraordinarily cold weather under a global warming scenario.

I guess you “didn’t get the memo” that that is a bunch of the deepest horseradish.

The warmest alarmists can try to spin all they please, but the entire pitch revolving around “CO2 is evil” is about warming. If the Earth is cooling, that is absolutely a signal that CO2 is not NEARLY the problem it was portrayed to be.

Myself, I’m figuring on at least 40 years of cooling from here, based on the solar cycles. How tragic for algore and the rest of his posse...

Globule warming is so passé. The phrase is now “climate change”. This covers it all. If the temperature goes higher then normal ... climate change. Temperatures go below normal ... climate change. Temperature deviates beyond the norm ... climate change.

Climate change phrased correctly in the best “screaming” headlines is a moneymaker.

We're pretty lucky. Leftists could have said that carbon emissions cause global cooling. But they flipped a coin and chose poorly.

Proof positive that God has a sense of humor.

"How tragic for algore and the rest of his posse..."

Far more tragic for the people of Europe. Most of their farmland is north of the worst weather and if things stay this bad or worse for a couple of decades they will starve.

Many countries east of the old dividing line...even south to Romania and Ukraine...are still very poor. Hell, even east to the Czech Republic and Hungary. The Balkans.

If we really are in a cyclical mini ice age, the human cost will be enormous.

The only saving grace is that most of these folks are from good Celt, Slav, Goth, and Saxon stock. That's about 20% Neanderthal.

They will survive. Even if they have to eat their dogs.

We often forget that the very most southern tip of Europe is right around the latitude of St. Louis Missouri. When the jet stream occasionally goes against them they get what Canada gets in a normal winter.

That's about 20% Neanderthal.

For literary reasons that might be okay, but realism says Neanderthals did not exchange genes with the other cohabitants of earth... at least not those that survived and developed further.

This in countries that grow oranges and olives. It's like 10 deg below in Sacramento, CA.

I wonder how well the Muslims are holding up in the cold.

Not too well apparently....

Last year some snow fell on Bedouin Arabs in Saudi Arabia....and they don't have a name for snow in their local dialect.

In other news the crazy Islamics in summer time Baghdad stopped delivery of ice blocks "because Mohammad didn't have any ice" in his day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-td-jTmxAyY&feature=related

The “Little Ice Age”, roughly from 1350 t0 the mid 1800’s, plunged Europe and Asia into such a deep freeze, causing widespread deaths - up to 900 million - but, other than a cold year after a catastrophic volcanic eruption, like Krakatoa, North America evidently didn’t get it - Indeed, in the winter of 1620/21, The Pilgrim’s first one in the new land, only had a few snowfalls - the deepest no more than a foot. (And when my great and great great grandparents were carving their farms out in the Main woods in the late 1700’s, early 1800’s, they weren’t hampered with the catastrophic conditions of Europe/Asia.)

If, indeed, the earth is doing a little ‘reset’, resulting in the north pole shifting and turning the Europe/Asia side a bit further north along with it, then that would result in our half of the globe shifting a bit further south - the equator a bit closer to us.

I’m okay with that. ;o) - but I worry about the goracle gang. They’re probably already devising a way to blame the shift on us and tax us for ti.

Gadz! That cold snap brings back memories of the winter of '85 in Germany. I was stationed near Grafenwohr, and we were informed that the Siberian Express was coming through. Well, our Commander decided that it was a great opportunity for his troops to get some Arctic training, and sent us to the local training area. We sat out there for a week, freezing in those iceboxes we called "armored vehicles". One by one, the vehicle heaters gave up the ghost. When the mermited food arrived, it was frozen, even the coffee. By the end of the week, we had 1 vehicle that was still operational and we were all packed in the thing, trying to stay warm. Even then, you got so cold that your bones hurt.

Oh yeah, the commander never left the post. He stayed in his comfy digs until it was all over.

When my MLRS unit did the wintertime Graf we had GP tents and Yukon stoves. Our tents had liners and we mixed the Yukon fuel 50-50 mogas-JP8. We didn’t get extreme temperatures but with the Yukon glowing it was down right toasty in the tent. I always tried to have hot cocoa and coffee on the Yukon for my soldiers.

We were lucky that our command was in the field with us and our equipment had many hydraulic seals which wouldn’t do well in low temps. If the equipment was run below 20 degrees the vehicle would deadline post haste. Rather than freeze our backsides off in broken equipment we’d drink hot cocoa and coffee in our tents and wait for it to warm up.

Just sayin....

Some Southern folk come up to train once in a while, and it’s always amusing to watch them try to cope on a winter warfare course, or just a winter ex.
