Russia, Vietnam to Jointly Manufacture Anti-Ship Missiles
16:45 15/02/2012MOSCOW, February 15 (RIA Novosti) Russia and Vietnam are planning to start in 2012 joint production of a modified anti-ship missile, head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation Mikhail Dmitriyev said on Wednesday.
We are planning to build facilities in Vietnam for the production of a version of the Russian Uran [SS-N-25 Switchblade] missile in a project that is similar to joint Russian-Indian production of the BrahMos missile, Dmitriyev said.
The Uran subsonic anti-ship missile can be launched from helicopters, surface ships and coastal defense batteries. It has a range of up to 250 kilometers (135 nautical miles) and carries a 145-kilogram high explosive warhead.
Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace Ltd, set up in 1998, manufactures supersonic cruise missiles based on the Russian-designed NPO Mashinostroyenie 3M55 Yakhont (SS-N-26).
Sea- and ground-launched versions have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian Army and Navy.
China -- big military buildup
China -- major presence in Africa
China -- major presence throughout Asia
Europe -- a basketcase
USA -- visibly weakening
Future not looking so hot. If things fall apart, the bad guys have a lot of material pre-posiitoned, they have a lot of resources they can draw upon. They can attack anywhere in the world. We no longer even pretend that we can fight two wars simultaneously.
All we need now is a non-aggression pact between Moscow and Berlin Beijing.
A strong Vietnam is a big PITA for China. And they know it, from past experience.
This is very much an anti-China move.
Russians are increasingly POEd at the Chinese copying and selling their weapons.
One of the sillier FR memes is the Russia/China grand alliance. They fundamentally don’t like each other and China feels like they were unfairly screwed out of owning Siberia in a treaty 400 years ago.
This is what Russians do best ... play everyone against each other. This move helps Vietnam against China much like other moves help China against the US.
I think Russia is interested in Europe and the Middle East.
I think China is interested in Asia and Africa.
They don't need to fight each other. They don't need to join with one another.
If either or both of those countries decides to expand, I do not see any credible power in the world being ready to step up and stop them. We might think we would do that, but we're kidding ourselves. Our politicians do not have the stomach for a war that might have over 5000 casualties.
I don’t think you got it right. Both Vietnam and India are Russia’s natural allies to counter Chinese influence in Asia.
Russia views China as a bigger threat comparing to NATO.
