New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced Tuesday that he plans to order flags on public buildings to fly at half-staff on the day of Whitney Houston's funeral to honor the songstress and Jersey native.

"Whitney Houston was an important part of the cultural fabric of this state," Christie said during a press release Tuesday. Christie also said the pop legend belongs in the same category as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

He said he will sign the order later in the week after Houston's family makes a final decision regarding time and place of the funeral.

A Newark church pastor announced Tuesday that that a private funeral will be held for the popstar on Saturday at Newarl's New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston sang

I have nothing against Whitney Houston I’m sorry she died. Wouldn’t it be best for our youth if instead of honoring her, we cursed her to hell?

It is also done for politicians, who are lower than scum.

She was a New Jersey native. I don’t see a problem with it a state honoring one of its citizens like this.

She was talented, but an abject lesson in what not to be.
on pills and booze and die drunk and stoned in a bathtub.

Tragedy but does not deserve flag honors. Cheapens the act for honoring true heroes.

Ultimately, everyone serves a purpose to God. Some are good examples of how to live in this life, and others, in their death, are examples of how not to live.

Who are you to judge?

I think they're talking about the NJ State flag here. AFAIK, Governors don't have any say in when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff.

The National Anthem at the Supwerbowl, 1881, ten days into the Gulf War (Desert Storm)

Could be this is what Christie was thinking, but could we just give the bashing a break, just for her doing this?

Not a fan of her music, but I'd still take her songs over Springsteen's.

In another time, the death of an entertainer due to his or her own drug and alcohol abuse would not have merited this level of public grief and state mourning. I doubt New York lowered its state flag when Lenny Bruce died, or Alabama when Hank Williams, Sr., died, or Texas when Janis Joplin died. But that was another time, and not our own, unfortunately.

Fine. Fly the New Jersey state flag at half-staff!

But, flying the National Colors at half-staff for an entertainer who essentially killed herself on drugs is totally inappropriate.

She was a good singer but...

She was a drug addict and likely died due to a mix of drugs (either leagal or illegal) and alcohol. Her two day bender all around town prior to her death was well documented.

She should be acclaimed for her talent but her life should be shown as an example of what substance abuse can do to you.

Oh great. The timing is terrible. I am visiting friends in Point Pleasant Beach on Saturday. Well hopefully the flags will be back to their appropriate place by then. I agree this is unsat for reasons that the military folks don’t get the same treatment most of the time.

In the United States, the President can issue an executive order for the flag of the United States to be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States government, and others, as a mark of respect to their memory. When such an order is issued, all government buildings, offices, public schools and military bases are to fly their flags at half-staff. Under federal law (4 U.S.C. § 7(f)), the flags of states, cities, localities, and pennants of societies, shall never be placed above the flag of the United States; thus, all other flags also fly at half-staff when the U.S. flag has been ordered to fly at half-staff.

Governors of the several U.S. states or territories are authorized by federal law to order all U.S. and state flags in their jurisdiction flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for a state official or resident who has died. Since a governor’s executive order affects only his or her state, not the entire country, these orders are distinguished from presidential proclamations.

I’ve been thinking about Christie’s flag-lowering a lot this morning, and have concluded it makes great sense with either of the following scenarios:

1. Christy is sending a strong, defiant message to Rex Ryan that there is only room for one top buffoon in the North-East: Chris Christie.

2. Christie is simply preparing the state for the inevitable week-long statewide shutdown when Uncle Floyd passes away (hard to understand if you are not from NJ).

Well he is the Governor of the state, and it is his place to decide when the state flags get lowered.

Look, since Whitney Houston went "one toke over the line" a few days ago somewhere around a thousand people have died from their inability to overcome drug or alcohol addiction. It happens to people of every station in society, not just sterno bums who live under bridges. Every one of them was somebody's spouse, parent, child, sibling, friend...whatever. Everyone of those deaths was equally senseless. Almost none of them will provide a chance for an impact beyond a small circle of people.

To give you an idea of how much our society has changed in 30 years, I was in the Marine Corps when John Belushi died in 1982 (also a bad combination of drugs). We joked about putting the base flag at half mast for Belushi and we doubled up in laughter at the thought of it. Of course, we were joking around and just the notion of putting a flag at half-mast for an entertainer (boozed up or not) was ludicrous.

Now 30 years later, here we are actually putting flags at half mast for entertainers - while our troops from Afghanistan and elsewhere come home in body bags with no fanfare except maybe a mention in their hometown paper.

Ya, is it really appropriate to fly the flags at half staff for a singer/entertainer?

I liked some of her music, but is she really deserving of such an honor?

How many of you even knew she was from New Jersey before her death, and the plans to have her funeral in that state? She was part of the cultural fabric of New Jersey? Really?

Gov Cristie, you dolt! The flag flies at half mast for people and dignitaries of honor... not for drug addicts, pimps and hollywood celebrities. She was great in her day to be sure, that is until that pimp and druggie Bobby Brown entered into her life. She made the choice to go down that road of self gratification/ destruction, is that what you want your kids to see, a woman honored for her self destruction?... should’a just left it alone...

No way a singer should get half staff.

Especially a singer who didn't even write her own songs. Yes, she was a great singer...but there are plenty of singers just as good as her, who are understudies on Broadway.

She just happened to have a look that was marketable, and the music industry funneled the best songs from various songwriters to her.
