New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced Tuesday that he plans to order flags on public buildings to fly at half-staff on the day of Whitney Houston's funeral to honor the songstress and Jersey native.

"Whitney Houston was an important part of the cultural fabric of this state," Christie said during a press release Tuesday. Christie also said the pop legend belongs in the same category as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

He said he will sign the order later in the week after Houston's family makes a final decision regarding time and place of the funeral.

A Newark church pastor announced Tuesday that that a private funeral will be held for the popstar on Saturday at Newarl's New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston sang

Now that the flag is denigrated in such public manner as is our national anthem when sung in public venues and the constitution trashed by our president, it begs the question of, is there anything left of our national dignity?

The sewer creatures have surfaced and rule the day.

Geeze, did you watch the video?

Just watch the video. It’s a lovely tribute by an American girl to her country and she brings down the house.

She’s reverent to the event in her appropriate and modest track suit and to her country in her colors (white with red and blue).

She seems happy to do the job.

If she had sung it live, as well, it would’ve been better and if, by chance, she missed a note, she’d have made a real mess.

Bah humbug.

My original point was to repuest easing up on the Whitney bashing.

Could you just watch the video?

Well, I agree that it’s not too smart to glorify these kinds of people, certainly not without a strong admonition against their bad behavior. “Cursing people to hell” is a bit too much for me though.

Dumazz. Does he order the flag to be flown at half-staff when any New Jersey-ite celebrity dies? Or only those who are famously substance addicted and die of an overdose?

Stanne.....the facts is the facts. This 'stellar' performance was pre-recorded, and Ms. Houston "acted out" the performance.

You need to just settle down and accept reality.

I stated that I knew she lip synched the song. If you don’t like it because of that, fine.

Please do not write to me again. I have tapped into some kind of Houston hatred that I am quite finished with.

I take issue with that. I haven’t lost any loved ones in the line of duty but it is disrespectful to lower the flag for someone who did not die for our country or a police officer/firefighter who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Ok I agree. I meant it as a figure of speech and I’ll explain why I used it.

In one of my favorite films Taras Bulba, Yul Brynner leads the Cosacks Tony Curtis is his son. Curtis makes the mistake of insulting one of the other Cosack leaders, and they must compete in a challenge to the death. Curtis wins and the other Cosack dies.

To his sons, Brynner says remember this, the man who died today was a great Cosack. Then he proclaims to everyone that the dead leader should be “cursed to hell!” That was their culture and it was important the loser be branded as the wrongdoer.

And that was what led me to say for the good of our kids, perhaps she should be “cursed to hell” rather than revered. I was wrong to use that phrase.

Absolutely stupid to glamorize this crack sniffing druggie. She has been on the fast track to hell for the last 20 years and no reason to memorialize her

Christie does not even know the laws of the State he governs.

No. Section 7m of the Flag Code authorizes a governor to half-staff the US flag upon the death of a present or former official of the government of the state, or the death of a member of the Armed Forces from that state who dies while serving on active duty.

Houston was not a present or former member of the govt of the state and she never served a day in uniform. Christie is breaking the law of his own state. He did the same thing for Clarence Clemmons, Bruce Springsteen’s sax player. Christie is an idiot. He figures this will get him a few liberal votes when he runs for reelection.

Alrighty, that makes a bit more sense. Sounds like a good flick too, I’ll have to check it out. Don’t know if I will make it through it if Tony Curtis is playing a Cossack with a Brooklyn accent though... I’ll die happy if I never have to hear him say “Spahtacus” again.

Great music, classic story, tragic ending, beautiful co star (who he married), great Yul Brynner performance.
