GOP demands apology for Obama campaign manager's 'chimichanga' tweet

Republicans are demanding an apology Wednesday from President Obama's campaign manager after a tweet that they argue was insulting toward Latino Americans.

Jim Messina, who is helming the president's reelection effort, tweeted a line from a column written by The Washington Post's Dana Milbank, in which he argues that Republicans will struggle to attract the Latino vote after coming out against the DREAM immigration reform act.

"Line of the day from WAPO's Dana Milbank: 'The chimichanga? It may be the only thing Republicans have left to offer Latinos,' " Messina tweeted.

But the comments drew rebuke from Republicans, who argued the reference to the deep-fried burrito was culturally insensitive.

"The fact that the campaign manager of President Obama's reelection campaign thinks it's appropriate to disseminate insulting jokes about the Hispanic community is a perfect example of the kind of empty rhetoric that characterizes this White House's so-called outreach to Latinos. We demand that Mr. Messina immediately apologize and we ask that President Obama disavow his campaign manager's ridiculous statement," said Jennifer Sevilla Korn, executive director of the conservative Hispanic Leadership Network, in a statement.

Yup, this is the level of maturity that our political parties have reached .... I've seen this level of debate and intellectual horsepower watching an arbitrary group of 8 yr olds debate who is cooler, "Spiderman" or "Ironman". (Ironman, obviously).

I don't know which side to slap first - trouble is that I think if I started slapping these politicians for their childlike squabbles, I don't think I could stop.

The GOP should leave the race baiting and apology demanding to the Democrats.

Agreed. Its a waste of time because we know the democrats aren’t going to apologize for it and hispanics aren’t terribly offended by it.

Can someone 'splain this to me? Is using the word "chimichanga" in reference to Latinos the same thing as using the word "watermelon" in reference to African-Americans? Are other ethnic food prodcuts equally offensive to Latinos? Can we say "taco" or "tortilla", or are those words indications of racism too?

I'm never sure which food items are offensive to which races.

According to one source,[6] the founder of the Tucson, Arizona, restaurant El Charro, Monica Flin, accidentally dropped a pastry into the deep fat fryer in 1922. She immediately began to utter a Spanish curse-word beginning “chi...” (chingada), but quickly stopped herself and instead exclaimed chimichanga, a Spanish equivalent of thingamajig.[7] Fortuitously, the euphemism was a well understood Indianism for the standard Spanish “chango quemado”, meaning “burnt monkey”

We're also going to try to replace some of our older servers and failing equipment this year so we're going to add a little extra to our FReepathon goals. John is estimating ten to fifteen thousand to do this and I'd like to get it all in place and working before the election cycle is fully heated up, so we'll try to bring in a little more now if we can and the rest next quarter.

And the Latino voters turned around to the Democrats and said, “Kick me again to show you really love me.”

I'm personally offended by the words "brussel sprouts".

I'll try to keep that in mind. LOL!

Another thing I'm perpetually confused about is what word to use when describing certain races. Is it now more PC to use "African-American", or is it better to use "black"?

I'm still trying to figure out the difference between "Hispanic" and "Latino", and in what circumstances it might be offensive to use one or the other. While trying to find that answer on google, I learned that the word "Chicano", when describing Mexican-Americans, is highly offensive. Actually the term "Mexican-American" might be offensive too, but I'm not sure about that.

I attended K-12 in the San Diego area a few decades ago. It was an upper-middleclass area with a significant minority of Mexican-American students. All the way through middle school, we were "educated" to use the term "Mexican-American" to respectfully describe those classmates without offense. By the time I got to high school, we were re-educated to understand that the new, politically correct term for those students was "Chicano". There was even an elective course called "Chicano Studies" that we were encouraged to take in order to increase our cultural sensitivity.

Now, according to this site, you should never use the word "Chicano" because it's disrespectful, and intended to demean and insult.

Heck, if it weren't for fear of offending you, I might just give up and call everyone a brussel sprout.

" I'm never sure which food items are offensive to which races. "

I worked a demolition job once with a black guy we nicknamed Pork Chop, and he didn't care for it at all.

He brown-bagged it every day, nothing but pork chop sandwiches, bone-in, between slices of bread. Every day. We just about had to nickname him Pork Chop!

Our foreman was the boss' son, white, and his nickname was Chapstick. He always was either in the truck or in the shade, and he thought he was God's gift to rock and roll...hair pick in one hand and Chapstick in the other. He never got dirty.

I’ve designed a machine that can do this. I’m optimistic about sales. Want in on the ground floor?

Oh, dear. I’m a uniquely “American” mix of English, Scottish, Welch, French, Irish, and a smattering of German and Native American, courtesy of all 4 branches of the family tree being among the earliest settlers to this country. I was raised to refer to myself as “Heinz 57”. Now I’m thinking that since “Heinz” is a German name, that’s probably offensive too.
