Judge: Texas primaries likely to be May 29

SAN ANTONIO:

In the final moments of Tuesday’s redistricting hearing, a three-judge panel said Texas’ primary elections likely will not occur before May 29.

While Judge Jerry Smith, one of three federal judges in the San Antonio redistricting case, said the likely date of the primaries will be May 29, he did not commit to the date. Smith, however, told the state’s two major political political parties that they should prepare proposals based on that assumption

The Republican Party of Texas and the Texas Democratic Party will prepare a schedule in the coming days that will include dates for early voting and runoffs. They also will determine when to reopen the filing period for candidates looking to run for office.

Candidate filing was suspended earlier this year as the legal battle over Texas’ congressional and legislative districts dragged on.

Lawyers for the state and attorneys representing clients that are suing the state over the Legislature’s redistricting maps also managed to reach an agreement on an interim state Senate map to be used in the 2012 elections. They still have not agreed upon a state House maps or a congressional map.

Congressional District 25, which is currently occupied by Doggett, D-Austin, remained a major sticking point.

Yes, we’re getting screwed.
We were already screwed but now we’re getting screwed worse.

I hate to say it, but if this escalates it could be.. bad things.

Thanks, onyx, for posting this for me. I have’t posted anything before and I was so shocked at this email I got from The Austin Statesman, I wanted it posted fast and didn’t want to waste time to do it myself.

Our presidential candidates won’t get any delegates from Texas until THE END OF MAY! This is unbelievable. The Newt camp will probably go nuts over this as he’s counting on our 155 delegates to go to him. That, of course, isn’t certain at this point, but to put our primary the last of May is nuts.

I don’t have a voter card, either. Our county is large and part of it is in one district and the other part in another district. The new map puts them together, so we can’t get a voter card until the district lines are in concrete.

What's the conflict over the 25th? I'm guessing that the black minority thinks the white guy represents them while the change would very likely result in a brown guy being elected. And in my experience there's no worse blood than that between those two groups. Gads, they seem to really, really hate each other. If they were white I guess it'd be racists.

Ah, the complications of a Balkinized election map.

Not exactly, but close. It was a Mexican-American Texas Legislature Democrat representative (don't think he is senator, but could be), who filed the law suit. He thought the lines were discriminating against Mexican-Americans.

Our primaries were in March, but this law suit happened, so they moved it to April 3, thinking it would be done by then. Well, it isn't, so now it's May 29.

This is what happens when he courts overstep their legal authority. This whole case is a ponzi scheme to create minority-majority districts to basically FORCE the election of hispanics and blacks.

How is that any more fair than reverse Jim Crow laws?

We're also going to try to replace some of our older servers and failing equipment this year so we're going to add a little extra to our FReepathon goals. John is estimating ten to fifteen thousand to do this and I'd like to get it all in place and working before the election cycle is fully heated up, so we'll try to bring in a little more now if we can and the rest next quarter.

Well, it isn’t, so now it’s May 29.

That even maybe optimistic as I’m seeing June tossed out as a possibility.

Super Tuesday was the orginal schedule which would have allowed Texas to be in the first 35% of delegates selected. Pushing it back to Apr. 3 put the percentage to 63%. Now in late May it will be at 85% or higher if it goes into June.

One possibility is to have the Presidential primary split off from the others and that could still be on Apr. 3, but time is critical for that date along with the expense involved.

It appears some 50+ state house district lines are under discussion and I’m sure some state senate districts also. I think Sen. Wendy Davis got his old district back pretty much intact from what I’ve see.

Still a mess.

This presidential election is so important - and Texas doesn’t vote until May 29??

Our state convention is in June, now immediately after the primary May 29. Not sure they will have enough time to organize for the convention - it takes time for the list of delegates to get to the state and get all the paper work done. Wonder if they are going to move the convention date to later? I’ll know that very soon.

Thanks. I wondered because when the map was first released some Mexican-American guy was gonna run since the redrawn district looked favorable to him and I figured the repukes were trying to get rid of Doggett.

Which one one hand I can understand, who wants to work with a complete idiot but then on the other hand he's not only a complete dork he's also ineffective.

To me the way the map was drawn they were taking it away from the Austin commies and giving it to the Mexicans but there ya go.

Not sure if there's anything that we Texas citizens can do about this, other than scream out loud.

Please keep me posted if there is anything we can do. All phone calls I've made to Austin (reps, etc.) about this, just give the run around.

“Our county is large..”

My county is small. I called the County Clerk’s office, even though I knew the reason for the delay in new cards being issured, just wanted to see what the response was.

The poor lady dissolved into babbling...”We have to get the cards printed, we have to get overseas ballots mailed, candidate filing deadlines..and on and on.”

I felt sorry for her.

Even if it is April 3, it'll likely be over by then. But if it's not by April 3, it probably won't be by May 29th either.

I am still ticked off at having no voice in the '08 primary, except a protest vote. If Texas had an earlier primary, say right after or the same week as Florida, McStain would likely not have been the nominee.

Us Texans were resigned to “Operation Chaos” by the time the Primaries rolled around in 2008. I did not think the Texas primary in 2012 would matter anyway. It seems to be decided before we have a say and especially this year.

Ah, the complications of a Balkinized election map.

Texas has already been a minority-majority state for several years, with whites making up around 45% of the state, and Hispanics less than 8 points away, probably passing them up by 2020. You just think it's balkinized now, just wait until Hispanics pass up whites and become the majority. You'll see some court battles over districts then.

Yes, we’re getting screwed. We were already screwed but now we’re getting screwed worse.

I don't think of it as that, I think of it as Texas could make a huge stand to stop Romney.

Things will be a lot more clear by the end of May, and this might just motivate a lot of Conservatives to get off their butts and vote in the primary. If Texas had its primaries next week, there might not be all that many people voting in the primary.

I wish Texas held its primary in January, but this still gives it a chance to get a lot of the spotlight on its own and not be lost among the shuffle.

I found the article from last August that caused my confusion:

New contenders join Congressional District 25 race

At that point Doggett was going to jump to CD-33 and Rep. Joaquin Castro was going to run against him in the primary. Because CD-33 as originally drawn was more San Antonio than Austin it looked like Castro had a good shot.

The dim Michael Williams was going to run in CD-25 against a whole slew of other guys.

But I guess all of this is out the window.br

No, the two Federal Judges that are delaying the primary dates, and making null and void the redistricting that was accomplished by our legislature, have thrown the people, and State of Texas and state parties election process into utter chaos, and are deciding when the state convention is held.

The Primary Elections are not only for the purpose of polling voters as to which presidential and other candidates they prefer to be listed as party candidates on the General Election ballot, delegates to the County and District Conventions are elected at the Precinct Conventions held right after the polls close. The County and District Conventions are held in part to have an election by these elected delegates to select delegates to represent Counties and Districts at the State Convention, where delegates are named to represent States at the National Convention.

By holding the primary dates and redistricting hostage to the whims of two Federal Judges, the Federal Government has seized control of State Parties with a Convention System as well as the prerogatives of the State of Texas, and therefore; the state party does not decide when the state convention is held.

Let me put it another way. The Republican Party and Democrat party sets the date for their state convention. The Republicans have had theirs in June for as long as I can remember. Due to this law suit over redistricting, the primary date has been moved. Once the primary date is final, the parties will determine when they will hold their state convention.

Right. So let’s look at it this way: you normally get engaged on March 6, so that you have time to arrange for guests, showers, parties, etc. until the June wedding.

Instead, your mother comes in and says “no, you can’t get engaged until May 29 and do everything I tell you between now and May 29, at which time I might let you actually get engaged, but which is still just a tentative date, but then you must still have your wedding date in June, which really must be in June because the Honeymoon date is already set for August in Tampa, Florida.

What could be more reasonable than that?

You still seriously contend that the parties are setting the date for their state conventions?!

This is nit picking. When the districts are determined, the primary can happen and the parties decide when to have their convention after that. Not one thing can happen until the districts are decided, period, and that’s where we are.
