Gingrich gears up to fight for delegates in Michigan

(CNN) – Newt Gingrich is campaigning in Michigan next week on the hopes that negative sparring between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum will yield much-needed delegates before Super Tuesday.

The former House speaker is trailing his Republican presidential opponents in the latest Michigan poll. Since he has not spent any money on advertising there like his two rival contenders, Gingrich needs to pay a visit to convince voters that he’s still in the game.

In an interview Wednesday evening on FOX News, Gingrich laid out a strategy to pick up some delegates on Feb. 28, thanks to Michigan’s proportional representation, despite Santorum’s latest surge and Romney’s advantage as the son of a Michigan governor.

“My prediction is that if Mitt Romney goes and attacks Santorum as negatively as he attacked me in Florida and elsewhere, that what you’re going to see is he’ll peel votes off Santorum, but they’re going to come to me, they’re not going to go to Romney,” Gingrich said on the FOX News show, “On The Record.”

Has to be a head fake— while Rick and Mitt are beating each other up in Mich-— Newt has to be in Arizona.

Not if Santorum responds as a conservative. If Santorum decides to respond by announcing his vision for a permanent manned colony on the Sun then perhaps voters will conclude that Newt has the more realistic and practical plan.

Good luck on that. Rick “the issues” Santorum has the first article on his position’s page on his website deal with the horrors of Pornography. I’m sure Americans are just horribly vexed and spend all night in horror that their kids might see nudy pictures. The fact that they’re unemployed is only a secondary issue.

I don’t think they have a problem with the fact that Anthony Weiner is unemployed.

If Newt wants to defend porn, he’s more than welcome to do so but I don’t think it will help him win conservatives.

I don’t think anyone is going to defend porn. I just don’t think anyone cares right now, except for Rick Santorum of course, since it’s the first bloody article on his “Issues” page!

Oh my gosh, you’re right! Pornography is #1, something about “freedom” is #2 and gay marriage is #3. He gets to energy at #4.

Newt is going to highlight gas prices and our need for a national energy policy.

This is where the conversation should be.

We will be voting absentee, but will send it in fairly late. We haven't decided whether to vote our preference (Newt), or to vote strategically for Santorum, who is acceptable to us, potentially winning Michigan and slowing Mitt's campaign down.

Strange as it may sound, voting for Santorum may be the wiser move in bolstering Newt's chances for a rebound. Mitt must win as few states as possible to derail his "inevitable front runner" meme.

If Romney wins Michigan, its going to likely finish Gingrich off because people will see it as his fault.

If Romney wins Michigan, I think most people will realize it's name recognition from his pop's time as governor.

Just the fact that Santorum is challenging here, in one of the few states Romney won last time is remarkable, and will help take down the image of Mitt as the inevitable nominee.

It's why I may vote for him here, and has nothing to do with Newt.

All a Romney win will do is weaken both Santorum and Gingrich while strengthening Romney. I wish your fellow Gingrich Supporters could see it.

Some do, but it's like some of Santorum's supporters in other states.

Short sighted.

There are some Santorum supporters that claim Newt is not conservative and some kind of progressive monster, likewise for some of Newt's supporters for Santorum.

They have different strengths and weaknesses, both have done some fairly dumb crossovers with libs, but they are the two best we have. I hope that when push comes to shove, they work with each other instead of with Romney. I still think that a brokered convention with the two of them collaborating is the best thing that can happen this year.

Gingrich and Santorum will do best if they both work to take down Romney which is why I’ve said that both need to stay in the race but not challenge each other too strongly in their backyards.

I agree, I know I'm in a minority here, but I do think the two of them need to stay in the race to the end in order to take out Mitt.

I can support either; you know I prefer Newt, I know you like Santorum. Right now, because of the strategic timing in the race, in our Michigan primary I'm probably voting for Rick.

I think Newt's just saying that to avoid the "McCain quit Michigan" talk.

Newt needs to finish in the top two to get delegates because there's only two at large proportional delegates. He'd have to win congressional districts, and he's not in the running for any from any poll I've seen. He's in second place to Santorum in one of them if you believe PPP, but it's a distant 2nd to Santorum.
