Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Revives Phony Santorum Scandal
American Thinker ^ | 2/15/2012 | Howard Richman

The Democrat-leaning Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is trying to revive the so-called "scandal" that the Democrats trumpeted during their successful campaign to unseat Rick Santorum in 2006.

Other news outlets are starting to pick up the Post-Gazette's claims. For example, in an article published on February 14 and linked to by the Drudge Report ("Santorum's Electability Pitch Undermined by 2006 Senate Reelection Loss"), Bloomberg reports:

Santorum's 2006 loss came after he was accused by Democrats of being hypocritical for moving his family to suburban Virginia, yet still claiming a property tax deduction and tuition reimbursement in Pennsylvania. The school district where his Penn Hills home was located paid $55,000 to reimburse the online education of his children through the state's Cyber Charter School program, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The state repaid the district in a legal settlement after a Democratic school board member challenged the reimbursement.

Here's what really happened. From 1996 through 2001, Senator Santorum and his wife Karen homeschooled their children privately in Pennsylvania, submitting their affidavits and portfolios each year to the Penn Hills School District for review. Each year, they saved the Penn Hills School District the cost of the Santorum children's education.

How much they were paid to bring this up again?

Like a repeat of a TV show, nobody shows up. This will not get any traction at all. But if they want to being up this nonsense, what the heck? They are dying on the vine as it is. I mean especially if you are going to bring it up in Pittsburgh where every person already knows about it. They have absolutely zero imagination at all....all repeat, all the time.

The story is much more complex. The original write up was done by an old'gal in PA who writes for suburban advertising throw-aways. She also solicits bunnies for adoption out to families.

That right there more than likely violates the very narrow constraints of the USDA rabbit breeder marketing order ~ and there are heavy penalties and JAIL TIME for people who do that.

I gather this other newspaper up there wants to share in her crime.

The other complexity is that Virginia never decided that Santorum (or any other Senator who ever acquired lodgings here) qualified to be a resident (or before the Civil War, a citizen) of Virginia!

There are Senate rules that prevail in this case anyway, and attempts to concurrently, retroactively or any other way interfere with a Senator doing his job in DC are CRIMES that can be punished.

Time for Santorum to do a beat down on these pukes.

Fred,

Funny thing is that the media is not bring up any of this. They are focusing on stupid things like this homeschooling stuff and endorsement back in the stone age. Not that I am complaining or anything. They are trying so hard to knock Santorum out but are failing miserably. If is really difficult to vet someone who has little to vet. Sure his spending might get the attention of a few but I don’t think you could have a big story on what you have provided and knock him out. I know you would like that but it won’t work. People seem to be very happy with Santorum because of his incredible social issues and that is what is appealing to people this election. Keep trying though. To be fair, I will give you an A for effort. lol.

This was a stupid attack that didn’t go anywhere in ‘06. The Santorums were paying their taxes to that district and were supposed to get this benefit no matter where they lived. A RAT administration even said this complaint was unwarranted. If this is all the Left can generate to slam Rick, good luck to them.

Santorum gains ground in the primaries, expect Democrats to viciously beat the drum on Santorum’s schooling “scandal.”.............................................. LOL, they’ll probably find some bimbo like they did with Cain, in the same apartment/condo complex in Chicago, that will swear she saw Santorum having sex with goats or something like it. I’m sure they’ll be ready with truck loads of mud to distract from the real issues.

If you listen to Quinn and Rose in the morning, today a caller—from Penn Hills—related how she had been set up to participate in the PHSD witch hunt. And, she dropped this little bombshell, the original complatant, Erin Vecchio has been thrown under the (Penn Hills) school bus by the District AND the Democratic Party. Useful idiot who realized she was used? This is a non starter as a story...but one that could backfire on local Dems.

This is insane.

I read some of the other versions of this nonsense, and this is actually the first I’ve heard that Rick and his wife HOMESCHOOL their children. Even when they were taking the on-line courses—which were being paid for by taxes to the state and the district—the children were essentially still being homeschooled, and just getting a little outside help where their parents thought it was appropriate—probably math and science and things that they didn’t feel would brainwash their kids.

I’m glad to hear the real story.

Is this worse than Barack Obama putting his kids into one of the fanciest and most expensive schools in the country, while denying black kids living in DC the opportunity to attend charter schools or to use vouchers, as they had until he came along and cut them off at the knees?
