Wear black on Friday, February 17, 2012 to illustrate your collective mourning over the attack that has been launched against Virgnia's teachers and students by legislators with the open disrespect and disdain as demonstrated by eliminating continuing contract status for ...new teachers, an effort to diminish our pension benefits, and general underfunding of our schools resulting in too large class sizes, under resourced schools and classrooms, and salaries that lag embarrassingly below the national average in spite of the fact that Virginia is the 7th wealthiest state in the nation.

Did a TEACHER write that? Mighty long, incoherent sentence.

Protesting: since payroll deposit came along it’s the only reason teachers go to school...

Here in Fairfax County, starting salary for a teacher with a Bachelor’s degree is $44K/year.

10 years with a Master’s degree is $60K and after 30 years it hits the $90 to $95K range depending on degree held.

Fairfax County teachers have two retirement plans, the standard one and a supplemental plan.

And, many benefits with relatively low contribution.

The benefit systems are too complicated for an easy summary, but it seems to be (no surprise here) a very generous system.

That’s nothing new for their kind. Education, psychology, social work and nursing students wore black in our universities (since the ‘80s, at least) to protest all kinds of things (e.g., the existence of working class “males” on the planet).

And Virginia teachers with 30 years at retirement get OVER 50% of their top 3 year avg. salary as retirement pay!

How many businesses have that kind of plan for employees, with a 3 month vacation every year!

It's similar to that here in the People's Republic of Illinois. It's really hard not to resent these 55 year old retired teachers running around with their defined benefit plans, paid for by our property taxes, which very few of us have outside of government.

Schools need less $$ and less Admistrators.

401K’s, no pension.

Easy, like the real world.
