An Asian-American actress who starred in the controversial ad produced by Michigan Republican Pete Hoekstra's U.S. Senate campaign has apologized for her participation.
"I am deeply sorry for any pain that the character I portrayed brought to my communities," Lisa Chan, the actress, wrote in a statement on her Facebook page; this role is not in any way representative of who I am."
The ad, which ran statewide during the Super Bowl, features a young Asian woman riding a bike through a field of rice paddies and speaking broken English while thanking Hoekstra's opponent, Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow, for her "reckless spending."
"Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spenditnow," the woman says. "Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you, Debbie Spenditnow."
"It is very disturbing that Mr. Hoekstra's campaign chose to use harmful negative stereotypes that intrinsically encourage anti-Asian sentiment,"the Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote group said in a statement.
On Monday, Hoekstra defended the commercial. "Clearly China is one of many countries benefiting from our irresponsible spending," Hoekstra told Detroit's WJR-AM. "To highlight that is absolutely appropriate." A message left by Yahoo News at Stabenow's D.C. office was not immediately returned.
On Facebook, Hoekstra added: "[Those] trying to make this an issue of race demonstrates their total ignorance of job creation policies." During a conference call with reporters later Monday, Hoekstra continued to stand by the ad.
"We knew we were taking an aggressive approach on this, but this is a time when the people of Michigan and across the country are fed up with the spending," he told reporters. "It hits Debbie smack dab between the eyes where she is vulnerable with the voters of Michigan."

Did you cash the check, honey? Then quit whining.
So solly.
Would you like to be paid in cash or check?
The Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote group can go pound sand.
The ad spoke truth and they are squealing like stuck pigs!
it’s not an issue of race. It’s a China issue. wow, most of those in china are chinese..........amazing
Why is it that Asians in America who are family oriented, hard workers, usually not dependent on Govt handouts seem to always favor the rotten Dem party who promote the exact opposite. Maddening isn’t it.
Corrected copy:
"It is very disturbing that Mr. Hoekstra's campaign chose to tell the truth about the democrats that intrinsically encourage voters to support Republicans,"the Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote group said in a statement. We're assured that Lisa Chan will never get another job in Hollywood thanks to the blacklisting of conservatives and comrades who make "mistakes" such as this in supporting the evil Republicans.
China is race.
Foreigners cannot immigrate to China, unless they are of the Chinese race - in which case they are welcomed.
Truth, is truth.
China is all about race.
Were I Pete, I would perfunctorily apologize “to anyone who may have been offended” and then go on to re-emphasize in the strongest terms possible the point the ad was making. He should use the publicity to his advantage.
As to the Asian woman, she probably got a lot of pressure from her elders. Understandable. But, the facts are the facts: both about our relationship with China and the way most Chinese speak English. Tough.
To correc her quote, she’s “DeepRy Sorry”
Really.
“How DARE you portray Chinese people as Chinese! That’s stereotyping! You racist, horrible Republicans! Don’t you all know we should all be one big, happy country, without borders! Then we can have a global tax! Many of them! And everyone can live PEACEFULLY and happily among the flowers... um, except you evil Republicans, who will be torn to pieces and locked up and retrained for your own good until you learn how to get along with your fellow human beings and show proper respect to the planet!”
Ah, liberals. Gotta love ‘em.
Oh, wait. NO WE DON’T. :-)
Yellow Guilt
;->)
Will she then give her acting fee money back which she recieved for this job, or donate it to a charity??!. Crickets...
The Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote group promotes racism.
“Why is it that Asians in America who are family oriented, hard workers, usually not dependent on Govt handouts seem to always favor the rotten Dem party who promote the exact opposite. Maddening isnt it.”
Because the DING DONGS that run the party have NO CLUE how to reach them, and the Dems are excellent in using immigration as a club for beating on Republicans.
If it gains him votes and money, it was a good idea. If it costs him votes and money, it was a bad idea.
I personally agree with the message.
Last time I voted for Hoekstra he campaigned against allowing China into the WTO...As quick as little George put his support for China into the WTO, Hoekstra flip-flopped and rode in on George's coat tails...
We wouldn't have this trouble with China had not Hoekstra and his cronies moved China into the WTO...
Hoekstra, go away...
Does this mean they were praying the lace card?
I speak Chinese...That would be DeepRy SoLLy..
