Sheriff Sends SWAT Team To Conference Instead Of Presidential Protection
WISN ^ | February 16, 2012

MILWAUKEE -- When President Obama's motorcade drove through Milwaukee Wednesday, traffic was shut down.

That's a standard security measure normally handled by the Sheriff's Department, but Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said because of budget cuts he didn't have the manpower, and so the State Patrol handled it instead.

Sources tell 12 News the department had plenty of people on duty, but they were in Waukesha County.

The Sheriff's department confirms they had people at the Association of SWAT Conference and Vendor show in Oconomowoc.

Sources said more than 15 and as many as 25 members of the Milwaukee County SWAT team were at the conference at the same time the President spoke at Master Lock.

--snip--

Clarke is vacationing in Mexico and wouldn't respond to our investigation, but in a statement said the protection of the President is the responsibility of the Secret Service.

Wow! It must be a really slow news day in WI.

This is much ado about nothing.

I like the part, “...wouldn't respond to our investigation...”. Like it is a crime that needs to be investigated. I am guessing the conference was set up long before they new 0bama would be there, AND the Secret Service should take care of his security.

What’s wrong with this? It is up to the Secret Service to protect his sorry butt. If it had been in my city, I’d have expected nothing less from our public defenders. If Obama wants to go anywhere, then he should bring his protection with him. He costs us enough without having to make everyone go out of their way to get a photo/sound bite in his re-election campaign.

When you consider the Guv also had a cold, so he couldn’t meet the Prez, and add that to this whack from the sheriff, it’s pretty funny.

As for the press being concerned....tough!

Sounds like to me the head sheriff is miffed at budget constraints and put a voice - a political one - to that position.

Wisconsin Sheriff takes a slap at Obama ping

If you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list, please FReep Mail me.

For those who are unaware of the Milwaukee dynamic, Sheriff Clarke is a conservative, black Sheriff, appointed by a Republican Governor (McCallum) who rankles the liberal establishment no end. He has recently been in a battle with the liberal Milwaukee County Executive over Draconian budget cuts to his department.

Not surprised at all. Good, bad or indifferent, the sheriff is a very political animal. The Sheriff in my county concerns himself primarily with political issues rather than the nuts and bolts of his department. I’m sure it is the same in nearly every large county in the nation.

The Sheriff blamed it on budget cuts when his men were actually at a conference. I thought local law enforcement would take pride in helping to protect the President of the United States.

Sure it is! It’s right between Ixonia and Nashotah. If you hit Pewaukee, you’ve gone too far. I prefer Weyauwega, myself- you know, just north of Lake Poygan....

This guy is different. He's elected overwhelmingly by republicans and democrats because he's tough and really gives a damn. He's hated by the dem pols and respected by those in the inner city who want piece and security. He's a law and order tough guy. Sure he can get political when necessary but his game is really about making a difference and he's never thrown around the race card.

No, no, no... you are not looking at the big picture. The impact would be significant and painful for the entire country.

Our televisions would be full of Obama memorial garbage for at least a couple of weeks. Biden and his dems would torture the country with nonstop praise for Obama.

Hospitals, schools, libraries, streets and Naval ships are just a few things that would have to be renamed, “Obama”.

See, it’s a really big deal! LOL

Oh, on the upside, we could get another federal holiday. ;>)

I want him to live long enough to be sent to prison for 30+ years.

When Ahmadinejad came to speak at Harvard, Romney ordered State Police, explicitly, not to provide security. This was pretty typical of Romney, btw.
