Being a pill about the pill? Santorum vs US views
Associated Press ^ | February 17th, 2012 | CONNIE CASS and JENNIFER AGIESTA

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Most Americans don't share Rick Santorum's absolutist take on abortion. He's out of step on women in combat. He questions the values of the two-thirds of mothers who work. He's even troubled by something as commonplace as birth control - for married couples.

Even among a Republican presidential field eager to please religious conservatives, Santorum's ideas stand out.

A Catholic father of seven whose kids are home-schooled, Santorum may seem to wear his conservatism as comfortably as his sweater vests. But he's walked a careful path, keeping the more provocative opinions that helped sink his re-election to the Senate in 2006 mostly out of his presidential campaign.

That is until he leaped to the top of the polls, alongside Mitt Romney.

Now Santorum's record on social issues is getting a closer look. On several matters, he's outside the Republican mainstream. And if he becomes the GOP nominee, some of his ideas would probably be surprising, even puzzling, to general election voters.

Folks just have to get over the idea of whether this type of agenda reporting is right or wrong. It's just reality.

And it's time to examine whether Santorum can even win the GOP nod, as some of this polling data (maybe biased?) shows he's not even in the mainstream of the GOP on social issues.

We'll soon see.

But I don't see him picking up more than 25% of the women's vote in a general election.

If what you say is true then the reality is the leftwing media gets to pick who’s president of the united states & conservatives shouldn’t bother voting.

Well I think he can win. But what do I know, I am a woman, I trust he wont take my pill and he is god fearing. Women are a little more educated and pro life than they used to be. It is true, we are not in the 70’s anymore Give women more credit.

Why do you hate Catholics who actually follow the teaching of their church?

He has my vote for a very simple reason.

He's right.

Now here’s a full transcript of the 2006 Santorum video:

Host: So, would birth control be covered by that notion of freedom without responsibility?

Santorum: I’m—look, I vote and have supported, you know, birth control because it is not the taking of a human life. But, you know, I’m not a believer in birth control—in artificial birth control. Again, I think it goes down the line of being able to do whatever you want to do without having the responsibility that comes with that. And I don’t think it—it breaks what I think—now, this is from a personal point of view. From a governmental point of view, I support, you know, Title X, I guess it is, and have voted for contraception—although I don’t think it works. I think it’s harmful to women, I think it’s harmful to our society to have a society that says that, you know, sex outside of marriage is something that should be encouraged or tolerated, particularly among the young, and I think it has—and we’ve seen very, very harmful long-term consequences to a society. So birth control to me enables that, and I don’t think it’s a healthy thing for our country.”

Sen. Santorum not only “doesn’t vote against contraception,” but voted to subsidize it. (Title X is a Nixon-era family-planning program that directs federal taxpayer money to, among others, the pro-abortion group Planned Parenthood.)

“But I don’t see (Santorum) picking up more than 25% of the women’s vote in a general election.”

Then I’ll just have to vote for him twice.

"Why do you hate Catholics who actually follow the teaching of their church?"

Where did you come up with a silly question like that?

As I understand the implication of it you believe that anyone that does subscribe to Santorum's beliefs hates Catholics?

Is that your contention?

You need to get with the program, start swallowing media lies hook, line & sinker, and wring your hands about ‘unelectable’ conservative candidates.

You know I'm not a Romney supporter, why would you type that?

How great it must be to be King... as in King Baraq, whose vast network of sycophantic propagandists will attack all opponents 24/7 and free of charge. He won`t even need his extra $1B for paid attack ads, when the “media” does it for him gratis.

As for Santorum getting only 25% of the women`s vote.. that`s a disadvantage they`re all going to have, differing only in slight degree. He also polls much higher among women.

“You know I’m not a Romney supporter, why would you type that? “

Because the one candidate who does well with women is Romney. They aren’t going to go for the other Catholic in the race.

My attitude as well. Everyine knows who this punk is by now, regardless of his nonestop lies.

If we elect him again I will be sick, but so be it. I will adjust and life will go on.

So you are saying that if the MSM lies about a candidate or ridicules him we should just run away like cowards?

No way! I like the fact that the MSM is unfairly attacking Santorum and lying about him. If he shows he is tough enough to stand up to it than I am for him.

This weak, cowardly policy of letting the MSM choose our candidate can only lose. The MSM is 100% for Obama. They will attack any candidate who opposes Obama.
