Top GOP Senator Says ‘If Romney Loses Michigan, We Need a New Candidate’
ABC News ^ | February 17, 2012

A prominent Republican senator just told me that if Romney can’t win in Michigan, the Republican Party needs to go back to the drawing board and convince somebody new to get into the race.

“If Romney cannot win Michigan, we need a new candidate,” said the senator, who has not endorsed anyone and requested anonymity.

The senator believes Romney will ultimately win in Michigan but says he will publicly call for the party to find a new candidate if he does not.

“We’d get killed,” the senator said if Romney manages to win the nomination after he failed to win the state in which he grew up.

“He’d be too damaged,” he said. “If he can’t even win in Michigan, where his family is from, where he grew up.”

What about Rick Santorum?

“He’d lose 35 states,” the senator said, predicting the same fate for Newt Gingrich.

It would have to be somebody else, the senator said. Who?

“Jeb Bush,” the former Florida governor.

Newt is an SOB because hes sneaky, crafty, and a backstabbing icehole.. Pretty whats needed to handle democrats.. Oh! and RINOs..

This is the secret that is clearly out in the open. The major attraction to Newt Gingrich is that he has a history of being a fighter for conservative causes and he actually does fight, warts and all! I liken him to Lincoln's selection of that irreverent, cigar-smoking, hard-drinking, foul-mouthed general, U.S. Grant. He fights, by Pete's sake, he fights!

Why does this article have me immediately thinking of the line from Die Hard “We’re gonna need some new FBI guys.”

Actually, in theory “The Establishment” is right - this slate of candidates sucks ass. And the one amongst this Z team that MIGHT eek out a win in November (Milt), is horrid to say the least.

I'm still shocked that with the most important POTUS election since 1860 upon us, we have the weakest collective slate of candidates to run for any position ever running (my man love for “His (former) Rickness” notwithstanding).

GOP-E are the elephants. Elephants are scared of mice. Mythbusters even proved it! A secret senator elephant is afraid Mitt will lose Michigan to the mouse, I don’t recall them ever being scared of the amphibian.

[ Elephants are scared of mice. ]

Only in cartoons.. Real elephants step on mice, voles and lemming-like creatures and snakes all the time..

But I get yer metaphor tho.. there do be some snakes running the republican party there is no doubt.. Start with Juan McLaim and Sissy Graham.. and Misfire Luger..

Evidently Steele couldn’t stand the smell at the RNC..
What happened to Coulter surely she knows Willard is “Demon” possessed!!..

Poor old Santo should be too worried about his family to worry about the country..
Unless he is OWNED by the same folks that own Willard..

Newt seems to have all the right enemies.. the boy is receiving all the “FLAK” so he must be over the target..

The thought of actually firing up the base and getting out the vote NEVER occurs to the e-GOP.

I think you’re greatly underestimating Santorum’s chances in the general.

Both Romney and Santorum would easily win all 22 McCain states, plus IN and the Omaha CD. I think that both would carry NC, FL and VA (Romney would do better in NoVA, while Santorum would hsve higher margins in the rest of the state, but both would win). So each would start off with 248 EVs.

Then there’s OH, with 18 EVs. I think Romney’s odds of winning there are good, but Santorum’s are better. NH has 4 EVs: I think Santorum’s odds of carrying it are good, but Romney’s are better. With OH and NH, both Romney and Santorum would get to 270 and thus win.

And Santorum could also get to 270 if he lost NH but won one of PA, WI or IA (or one of MI, MN, NV, CO or NM, for that matter).

So while Santorum is not a perfect candidate, he can win, and he’ll make a terrific president. Unlike MA with its Senate race, the U.S. as a whole won’t have to face a choice between syphillis and herpes.

NOT only in cartoons. In one of the more surprising Mythbusters results it was confirmed! Check it out here.

LoL... actually I wouldnt want to step on mice either..
Wonder if an elephant has ever seen a white mouse..

Maybe elephants step on mice accidently.. because they didnt see them..
If not threatened pachyderms may be quite gentle creatures..
Meaning not fear of THE mouse... but fear of killing it.. may be the inspiration..

Who can psycho-analyze an elephant?..
Sorry... that would be YOU!!!..

The Obama campaign will go after a few electoral votes they lost to McCain. Arizona, Montana, and Georgia are potential targets.

Santorum got blown out by 19 POINTS the last time he ran for anything. That fact cannot be ignored, anti-GOP year or not. A 19 point blowout is a GIANT, LOUD “F**K YOU!!!!!!” to Santorum.

I despise Mitt, but, he could gut out a win in November; no way Santorum wins. Santorum will let Obama pull off a 34-36 state blowout.

And this talk that Santorum will put PA in play? That’s akin to saying Blanche Lincoln could help the Rats carry AR.

Santorum would make a good UN Ambassador.

And George W. Bush went after CA in 2000 and 2004. Obama will not come within 5% in any of those states, or any other McCain 2008 state, for that matter.

Rick Santorum was elected to the House in 1990 in a Pittsburgh-area district that had voted heavily for Dukakis in 1988, and, after redistricting, was elected in 1992 in a district where Dukakis had won by an even more lopsided margin (60-40, IIRC). In 1994, he was elected to the Senate against an incumbent Democrat who just 3 years earlier had defeated the best possible GOP nominee—former two-term Governor and 1988-91 U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh—by 10%. Santorum was reelected to the Senate in 2000, running 6% ahead of President Bush in PA (santorum won by almost 7% while Bush was losing by 4%).

While Santorum lost reelection by 19% in 2006, he ran up against a perfect storm of (i) facing a statewide officeholder who happened to be the extremely popular son and namesake of the late, beloved, legendary, pro-life Democrat Governor Bob Casey, (ii) having pissed off liberals and moderates with his comments—taken out of context by the media—about how the Lawrence SCOTUS decision striking down a state law prohibiting homosexual sodomy could lead to polygamy and bestiality being afforded constitutional protection in the future, (iii) having pissed off conservatives due to his endorsement, under pressure from President Bush, of RINO Senator Specter in 2004, and (iv) facing the worst electoral environment for Republicans since the Watergate elections of 1974. The 2006 results don’t change the fact that Santorum has proven ability to win blue-collar and Democrat votes, and he could be a formidable candidate in 2012.

PA is already in play, Bush almost won it in 2004 and Obama did only a few points better than Kerry did. I think it's 50/50 if Santorum is the nominee, slightly less if Romney is.
