When something in History of the Church proved embarrassing, such as the Kinderhook Plates hoax (where Joseph was tricked by pranksters who created fake metal plates - Joseph claimed they were ancient Egyptian plates), which is written in the first person by Smith, the practice was/is for LDS apologists to claim that a scribe or someone else must have written the embarrassing section instead of Joseph Smith. (Jerald and Sandra Tanner, Shadow or Reality? Chapter 7, “Changes in the Joseph Smith History,” pages 126-142)

Eerily familiar...

Party ownership of the print media
made it easy to manipulate public opinion,
and the film and radio carried the process further.

16. Ministry Of Truth

.......

The Ministry of Truth, Winston's place of work, contained, it was said, three thousand rooms above ground level, and corresponding ramifications below.

The Ministry of Truth concerned itself with Lies. Party ownership of the print media made it easy to manipulate public opinion, and the film and radio carried the process further.

The primary job of the Ministry of Truth was to supply the citizens of Oceania with newspapers, films, textbooks, telescreen programmes, plays, novels - with every conceivable kind of information, instruction, or entertainment, from a statue to a slogan, from a lyric poem to a biological treatise, and from a child's spelling-book to a Newspeak dictionary.

Winston worked in the RECORDS DEPARTMENT (a single branch of the Ministry of Truth) editing and writing for The Times. He dictated into a machine called a speakwrite. Winston would receive articles or news-items which for one reason or another it was thought necessary to alter, or, in Newspeak, rectify. If, for example, the Ministry of Plenty forecast a surplus, and in reality the result was grossly less, Winston's job was to change previous versions so the old version would agree with the new one. This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, photographs - to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance.

When his day's work started, Winston pulled the speakwrite towards him, blew the dust from its mouthpiece, and put on his spectacles. He dialed 'back numbers' on the telescreen and called for the appropriate issues of The Times, which slid out of the pneumatic tube after only a few minutes' delay. The messages he had received referred to articles or news-items which for one reason or another it was thought necessary to rectify.

In the walls of the cubicle there were three orifices. To the right of the speakwrite, a small pneumatic tube for written messages; to the left, a larger one for newspapers; and on the side wall, within easy reach of Winston's arm, a large oblong slit protected by a wire grating. This last was for the disposal of waste paper. Similar slits existed in thousands or tens of thousands throughout the building, not only in every room but at short intervals in every corridor. For some reason they were nicknamed memory holes. When one knew that any document was due for destruction, or even when one saw a scrap of waste paper lying about, it was an automatic action to lift the flap of the nearest memory hole and drop it in, whereupon it would be whirled away on a current of warm air to the enormous furnaces which were hidden somewhere in the recesses of the building.

As soon as Winston had dealt with each of the messages, he clipped his speakwritten corrections to the appropriate copy of The Times and pushed them into the pneumatic tube. Then, with a movement which was as nearly as possible unconscious, he crumpled up the original message and any notes that he himself had made, and dropped them into the memory hole to be devoured by the flames.

What happened in the unseen labyrinth to which the tubes led, he did not know in detail, but he did know in general terms. As soon as all the corrections which happened to be necessary in any particular number of The Times had been assembled and collated, that number would be reprinted, the original copy destroyed, and the corrected copy placed on the files in its stead.

In the cubicle next to him the little woman with sandy hair toiled day in day out, simply at tracking down and deleting from the Press the names of people who had been vaporized and were therefore considered never to have existed. And this hall, with its fifty workers or thereabouts, was only one-sub-section, a single cell, as it were, in the huge complexity of the Records Department. Beyond, above, below, were other swarms of workers engaged in an unimaginable multitude of jobs.

There were huge printing-shops and their sub editors, their typography experts, and their elaborately equipped studios for the faking of photographs. There was the tele-programmes section with its engineers, its producers and its teams of actors specially chosen for their skill in imitating voices; clerks whose job was simply to draw up lists of books and periodicals which were due for recall; vast repositories where the corrected documents were stored; and the hidden furnaces where the original copies were destroyed.

And somewhere or other, quite anonymous, there were the directing brains who co-ordinated the whole effort and laid down the lines of policy which made it necessary that this fragment of the past should be preserved, that one falsified, and the other rubbed out of existence.

But you don't have to convince yourself that he actively hated Reagan or Bush or Republicans or conservatives. Go down that road and you start getting crazy.

Year after year you try to pass that off in your endless support for the lifelong liberal, from a liberal family. Romney has always been liberal, that is why he was an anti-Reagan, Democrat supporter and fund raising independent, who was against conservatives in the Senate, and in the House.

Why not

it was and is true...

Willard Mitt Romney has hated Ronald Reagan and Conservatives at least since 1964 when at about age 18 his father George stomped out of the GOP convention in fury with young Willie in tow...

George was so angry against Goldwater and his good friend Ronald Reagan because Goldwatyer had got 800 delegates to Romneys 40 that he betrayed the GOP by helping Johnson the Democrat with money and influence as the MI Gov..

Johnson won the POTUS race in Nov 1964..

The hopes of the Conservatives were destroyed by the liberal traitor George Romney...

Later Ronald Reagan said this about the liberal traitor George Romney and his cohorts ...

“We don’t intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates wouldn’t make any sense at all.””

Willard Mitt Romney was groomed from a young age by his father to be POTUS and to hate Ronald Reagan and the Conservatives...

Hes been training his wholde life with one agenda in mind...

to be president of the United States...

He will not hesitate to back stab whoever gets the GOP nomination...

and yes he has been “rubbing his hands together dreaming of the day he would wreak vengeance on the GOP”

George Romney wasn't a serious candidate in 1964. 40 Michigan delegates voted for him, but he didn't campaign head to head against Goldwater. Nor did he contribute any money to Johnson. He wouldn't have had to help Johnson, who was going to win Michigan and the country anyway, and so far as I've been able to find out, he didn't. He was too busy trying to win his own reelection.

Willard Mitt Romney was groomed from a young age by his father to be POTUS and to hate Ronald Reagan and the Conservatives...

George Romney didn't enter politics until 1962, when Mitt was 15. He was 17 during the Goldwater-Johnson election and 33 when Reagan was elected. George Romney's main interest when Mit was young was running American Motors. Mitt pulled away from politics in his college years. He was more interested in making money.

But here's the kicker: how many people who believe that Mitt's been training his whole life to crush the conservatives also believe that the Dunhams faked that birth certificate for their Kenyan-born grandchild?

Really, learn about mormonism before you defend it.
Romney is who he is because of his mormonism not in spite of it.
You are really good at coming up with Romney excuses however, good job.

Not really.

I'll quote Mormon standards & absolutes back to Mormons -- tho I don't believe them or adhere to them.

"Tolerance" is one of the few purported absolutes liberals believe in (I say purported because they don't apply it very evenly & are in fact, quite intolerant of quite a LOT of things!)

So here we have not only NavyCanDo but YOU who, in effect preaches to keep religion out of these discussions...IOW you imposingly preach that others aren't to object to Romney's religious views.

Now that's not my standard -- but apparently it's both yours...
...Driftdiver (post #33: "Plenty of reasons to not like mittens. His religion has nothing to do with any of them.")...
...as well as NavyCanDo: Post #41: ("...plenty of reasons not to choose Romney as your candidate, but making his religion one of them, is small minded at best, bigoted at worse.")

Nothing wrong with holding people to the same standard that they impose upon others, right? (Didn't Jesus say how we judged others, we would be judged?)

If you BOTH don't want somebody vetted on their religious convictions, then stop commenting upon/vetting the religious convictions of FREEPER posters! (I mean, why should anybody treat Romney distinctly from how you consistently comment upon the religious convictions of others?)

So, in light of posts #33 & #41, I directly challenge BOTH of you to head over to this recently posted thread: Santorum Questions Obama’s Christian Values

Here's what I said on post #6 there:

I absolutely CHALLENGE ALL of the FREEPERS who have made comments along the lines of...
..."There's many reasons to oppose Romney but religion isn't one of them"...
...or it's "bigoted" to raise religion in a race for POTUS...
...to come on board this thread & apply their "high-minded lecture" to Santorum here.

If religion is...
...(a) off-limits or uncouth in some way;
...or (b) should be hermetically sealed from what constitutes "character"...
...then go ahead..."religion doesn't matterites" & the self-appointed "bigot patrol" are hereby invited...
...to come onboard this thread & go on the indirect defense of Obama on this thread by...
...attacking Santorum...
...plus lecturing posters to lay off bringing up "Christian values" and whether Obama has them or not.

Go on.

Be consistent (for some of you -- for a change).

Show that you're not a hypocrite after all.

Let's see those single-minded convictions about keeping beliefs & religion out of this race come out re: your even application of them across the board.

What? Few takers? What? You're going to prove yourself to be hypocrites, after all?

I dislike Romney for his politics and thats enough.

Yes the frothing at the mouth hatred is annoying. I don’t need to do an in depth analysis of his religion. I know his politics suck.

Since this is a political thread why don’t you make a political argument? Do you have one of those deep down in that storehouse of information?

I have made political arguments on this thread, you don’t understand them and merely grunt out some simple minded little hate spittle as your deepest reaction.

Your obsession with stopping people discussing Romney is baffling, you are expending massive efforts to defend him in post after post, so angrily that you are making personal attacks on his critics.

"...all you Mormon haters will use any chance to go on a tirade against mormons. This is a political thread, not a religious one. "

most of the 'mormon haters' you paint with a broad brush are ex-mormons

we all have family members still in the church, some whom we've been seperated from for years with little or no contact-

if you remember obama was passing himself off as a christian moderate when he sold himself to the american people--we would have been well served to have known the truth at that time

don't hate mormons, don't hate romney, if you're mormon we don't hate you

none of us want to be here talking about this, a cult leader is about to be leader of the free world...you can't expect people who've experienced that cult to be silent...any more than an exmuslim would be silent about islam, or an exscientologist about scientology

take it or leave it
