I can argue that the AP is not the only “effective” media monopoly. There are only about a dozen companies that control the vast majority of print and broadcast media, in the form of an “oligopoly”, a different organizational pattern that accomplishes much the same thing as a monopoly.
Union Pacific Railroad almost all the track west of the Mississippi. The oil refineries are effectively an oligopoly. Monsanto owns 98% of the US soybean and 79% of the US corn markets. The most compact oligopoly, with only two members, is between the New Times and Free Press, which have divided the US as alternative weekly papers.
