Just the Facts: State vs. Federal School Nutrition Programs
Posted by Courtney Rowe, Press Secretary, USDA, on
February 16, 2012 at 1:21 PM

In the past 24 hours, we’ve seen a lot of chatter online regarding a story from North Carolina in which a pre-school student’s lunch was deemed “unhealthy.” We’d like to set the record straight.

As established by law, USDA promotes healthier lifestyles for our nation’s school children through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program. The Department sets science-based nutritional standards for and oversees State administration of schools that choose to participate in these national programs. In exchange for meeting those standards, USDA provides reimbursement and other resources to schools so that children get the nutrition they need to learn, thrive and grow.

USDA does not, however, regulate sack lunches or any other food children bring from home to eat at school. That is a responsibility for parents, not the federal government. The incident in North Carolina involved local education officials and a State-run nutrition program, and USDA had no involvement.

On the other hand, it's none of your damn business.

This is why when a guy like Mitt Romney uses the “states rights” arguement to excuse his expansion of government, he’s full of shit. Big government is bad at all levels.

These two statements are contradictory:
-
“...In exchange for meeting those standards, USDA provides reimbursement and other resources to schools...”

“...The incident in North Carolina involved local education officials and a State-run nutrition program, and USDA had no involvement...”

“USDA provides reimbursement and other resources to schools so that children get the nutrition they need to learn, thrive and grow.”

The Federal Government is into virtually everything in everyone’s lives, and yet we sheeple continue to re-elect these petulant a$$holes in the House and Senate. They write some vague law giving someone like the USDA the ability to setup “some sort” of a “program,” and then they sit back and say to themselves “gee look at all the good we’ve done.” The taxing system is upside down. The Federal Government needs to have very little money and the states, a lot more. This is a complete disgrace.

Why do I not believe the USDA explanation? Next, we’ll hear it’s Bush’s fault.

People still aren’t getting it. Who are these companies supplying the food and what is their political affiliation.

Follow the money.

Was some lowly snot at the state level carrying on USDA pretentions? Multiple versions of this thing are yacking about in the yackosphere and it’s impossible to see through the fog.

The State (be it Federal, State County or City level) knows better. Shut up and get in line.

Hard to believe that I went to a school where the teachers were paid nothing as they were Nuns, the Administrators were paid nothing, as they were Priests, and ALL lunches were packed as we had no cafeteria only a milk machine.

Somehow between my 3 siblings and my self we have a cumulative 14 College degrees, all without student loans.

"promotes" oversees" "provides reimbursement"

Is that all? That's cool then.

Stupid mafia only promotes, oversees, and provides protection.

“On the other hand, it’s none of your damn business.”

It is absolutely the business of the USDA. It is one of the enumerated powers of the federal government found in the Constitution. It is the one that says... hang on, I know it is here somewhere... ummm... give me another minute, I know I can find it...

“Next, we’ll hear it’s Bush’s fault.”

Aw, man—I was just going to say that. Absolutely no one is willing to take responsibility for not letting the kids eat their homemade lunches. Does this mean that the school had complete strangers wandering the building and looking into the kids lunches?

Not only is it none of their damn business, but they've got it all wrong. Based on some health and weight gain/loss issues I've had over the past five years, the food pyramid is a disaster. I'm convinced it's created based on how much the grain industry lobbies CONgress. Using their recommendations I gained about thirty pounds and found myself unable to conceive. When I altered my diet to a low-GI diet I lost weight immediately and my medical conditions disappeared. I also have two babies! Big Gov needs to butt out.
