Who will be the next justice to retire, and who will be nominated to replace that person?
SCOTUSblog does some prognosticating and says California Attorney General Kamala Harris could be the next nominee tapped for the U.S. Supreme Court, replacing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. There's one big problem, though: Harris may not want the job.
In the lists of names, only one truly stands out as checking every box: Kamala Harris, Goldstein writes. Like the president, she is biracial, and she will be 50 years old in 2015. She is liberal, but she has a law enforcement background.
The only problem is that Harris could pass up a Supreme Court nomination because she would be early in her second term as attorney general at that point.
Another serious possibility is Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who knows the president from their service together in the Illinois legislature. Goldstein names seven other contenders, including former Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm and two women with pending nominations to federal appeals courts: former New York solicitor general Caitlin Halligan and U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Nguyen.

Yes, there are the surface problems with those two women -Harris and Madigan.
But for those of you that read the White House Insider - Kamala Harris is a name you will recognize.

I just may have to have to vote for Romney to keep the Chicago thug politics out of SCOTUS. I said I would NEVER NEVER vote for Romney. I just don't know if I can do it.
Please LORD GOD do not let the Marxist Jack-Wagon in the White House get another Supreme Court pick...... Sadly I still don’t know if I could vote for Romney as he has a habit of picking liberal judges also!(That leaves Newt or Santorum)
What is important is that the people see to it that he doesn’t get a next pick!
Hey thats easy to answer:
Anjem Choudary
The Ugandan Giant???
People should reject the notion that every Scotus pick has to be some sort of victim group.

Obama will not get another Supreme Court nominee. His replacement will get three in rapid succession through the deaths of Ruth Bader Ginsburg who will die of cancer, Stephen Breyer who will die of old age, and Sonia Sotomayer who will die of a seizure induced by her poor management of her diabetes.
It is interesting to me that Ginsburg doesn’t retire before Obama could be out. Of course, she still has time .
Combine WHI and WSI with the amputated fingers of the staffer in the WH last week, and......
Diane Feinstein will smile and say nothing.
This is bad juju. Ulsterman may not be liked around here, but my hair, or what’s left of it, stands on end these days every time there’s a new piece out.
Betcha Sen. Linda Graham (RINO-SC) is drooling just thinking what a privilege it will be to vote a Moslem onto the high court.
It will boil down to replacing one fetid America-hating marxist who never should have been confirmed with another.
These people infected with Washington DC long to hold on to power and will hold it until they can’t anymore.
Just noticed that Tony West was on the defense team of John Taliban Walker.
I think that Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be around to annoy us for another decade or two. I know that she previously had a battle with cancer, but she strikes me as one of these skinny folks who can hang on for decades without seeming to age any further (my grandmother was like that).
Sonia Sotomayor was not at the State of the Union address. Anyone know why?
Ginsburg will probably die right on the bench while hearing a case but everyone will just think she is taking another one of her naps.
FReepers who say “I refuse to vote for ______ if he is the nominee” should read this scary article to realize how idiotic that is.
There were rumors for a while that the left-wing socialist governor of Massachusetts, Deval “tax ‘em all” Patrick, was on Obama’s list for SCOTUS.
I think if Obama got three choices in a (please no) second term, he’d nominate the supposedly reverend Jeremiah Wright, Sean Penn and Van Jones.
If it is this year, and he is sure he will lose the election, I wouldn’t put it past him to nominate himself and drop his campaign. The dems would agree because they’d get Hillary a Lifestyle Lift and a haircut and nominate her for POTUS...they’d be glad to vote for Zero in the Senate and I’m sure he could find a RINO or two (hiya, McCain) to put him over the threshold. After all, he taught Constitutional law, someone said once.
You’re quite the optimist!
Are people in the kitchen known as Residence Staff? I want to know who got their fingers cut off. Sometimes things happen in the kitchen but how the heck did a life threatening injury involving amputation of fingers happen???
Even the milquetoast GOP won't permit Obama another SCOTUS pick before the election.
Well, remember that this is an election year. If she retired now, or in the summer after this year’s Supreme Court session is done, there would be a huge confirmation battle. And that confirmation battle would be a major campaign issue this year.
Let’s all remember, that of 33 Senate seats up for election this year, 23 are Democrats, a number of whom are vulnerable for re-election. It’s possible that Republicans will control the Senate come next January. Then, if Obama is re-elected, and Ginsburg retires, Obama will have a much tougher time appointing a strong liberal.
Or I should say, he will have a tough time appointing that liberal, unless he continues to make recess appointments to positions and not be challenged on doing so.
I don’t think Ruthie has any intention of retiring. My fondest wish is that she lives 15 minutes past Newt’s inaugeration.
My guess is:
Louis Farrakhan (semi sarc)
Yah, that’s great. We need a flaming communist, there seems to be a shortage of those on the SC.
I agree with you.
And furthermore, I have heard that conservatives in the Senate will stonewall this one, until past the election.
One thing about the Kenyan guy, you don’t have to know jack about anything and can have a single digit I.Q. With Barry, a “compelling life story” is all you need to be able to sit on the court and trump the will of the American people.
Yes.
Just what we need. An AG who defends Taliban.
The ultra-radical values she would bring to the SCOTUS, can be foreseen by her below statement:
"Let's also talk about creating a campaign around reducing not the crime but the fear of crime...Let's talk about that. If we, as a goal, decide that we want more people to just stop being afraid, because they're perhaps afraid of much more than they have reason to be afraid of, perhaps we can start to change the discussion about what we need to do about fear because we won't have so many people worried about the bogeyman."Yes, San Francisco's DA and California's AG thinks that Law Enforcement should be directed to reduce not crime but the fear of crime. How's that for an Obamatista transformation for the SCOTUS and the nation?
You cannot appoint that cop hating, cherry picking enforcing, Lebanese on the SC.
See, this is my point. We have a fighting chance with a
Republican’s SCOTUS picks. Some suck, some are great.
Reagan: great job w/Scalia, sucked when he picked O’Connor.
Bush I: awesome w/Thomas, sucked at Souter
None of the Democrat Presidents have picked a good SCOUTS. We have got to elect a Republican, even if they are not our first choice.
Cozy.
Too cozy.
Maybe Obama will nominate his illegal uncle.
He was arrested for DUI a while back while driving with an illegally obtained license. Surprise, he got a top law firm to represent him and they’re going after the driving records of the LEO who arrested him.
He’s still living on the dole and apparently employed at - are you ready for this - a liquor store! A Muslim working at a liquor store?
Anyway, he’s going to need a better job, so why not?
Politicians are scum.

Obozo has painted Ginsburg into a corner. He needs her on the Supreme Court to cast her vote to uphold ObozoCare. That decision is not likely to be handed down until August or September so she cannot retire until after that case. As soon as that case is decided, the Congress will be in recess to compaign for themselves and their friends. That means the Senate will not take up any nominee until the current Congress returns. Harry Reid may try to hold hearings and schedule a vote during the lame duck session, but I doubt he would be successful. My prediction that Justice Ginsburg will succumb to her cancer while sitting on the bench in last Spring of 2013 still stands.
Kamala Harris is a two-fer: black and Asian at the same time. Since he has a large pool of extreme leftist lawyers to choose from, considerations like that will probably play a major role in his decision.
If Obama looks likely to win (and the MSM seems to have decided he is a virtual shoo-in), then Ginsburg has no reason to retire now. Thurgood Marshall made the mistake of assuming G. H. W. Bush would be unbeatable in 1992 so he retired--if he had stayed on the Court until his death Clinton would have picked his replacement. Instead we have Clarence Thomas.
A radical leftist politician??
No way. His nick was Stinky? LOL
BTW I thought Bayport was in Long Island, not MA.
It'll be a marxist
KSM
Santorum voted to confirm Sotomayor to the 2nd Circuit knowing it would fast track her to the Supreme Court where she now sits. (Thanks, Rick!)
Obama will pick some invincible "minority" and the GOP will rubber stamp no matter how disturbing the choice. The establishment are gutless.
The vile Kamala Harris is precisely the sort he might pick. She's the future of this nation's Democrat politics.
Unless you look at who Romney nominated to the courts in Massachusetts and who his top campaign man John Sununu recommended Bush, Sr. nominate, David Souter. What's the difference between the next David Souter and Obama's next affirmative action pick to the courts?

Harris created a special Hate Crimes Unit as San Francisco District Attorney. She focused on hate crimes against LGBT children and teens in schools. She convened a national conference to confront the “gay-transgender panic defense”, which has been used to justify violent hate crimes.[40] Harris supports same-sex marriage in California and opposed both Proposition 22 and Proposition 8.[41]
In her campaign for California Attorney General, she has received the endorsements of numerous groups, including the abortion rights EMILY’s List...
Harris is opposed to the death penalty but has said that she would review each case individually.[27] Her position was tested in April 2004, when SFPD Officer Isaac Espinoza was murdered in the Bayview district. Harris announced that she would not seek the death penalty for the man accused of his killing. The decision evoked protests from the San Francisco Police Officers Association, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and others.
Harris’s position against the death penalty was tested again in the case of Edwin Ramos, an illegal immigrant and alleged MS-13 gang member who was accused of murdering Tony Bologna and his sons Michael and Matthew.[21] On September 10, 2009, Harris announced she would seek life in prison without the possibility of parole rather than the death penalty in the Ramos case.[30]
Harris has expressed the belief that life without possibility of parole is a better, and more cost-effective, punishment.[31]
