N.J. man racks up $120,000 bill in unpaid tolls & fines using mom's car [ Greedy NYC Liberals ]

A recovering addict in New Jersey racked up $120,000 in unpaid tolls and fines for his mother after he used her car to buy drugs.

"I used to take her car to [New York City] to buy drugs," a contrite Peter Davis said. He claims to be a recovering addict and living with his mom in an Englewood, N.J., apartment.

It is actually his mother, 75-year-old Jean Davis, who is shamed on the Port Authority's website as owing the most money of any scofflaw.

But on Saturday, Peter Davis admitted that he is the one who racked up the debt, by using her Ford Focus for years to blow through tolls on numerous trips to Manhattan to get high.

"When you're addicted like that, you don't think of the consequences. You have other things on your mind," the 52 year old said.

Thanks to his many drug junkets, his mom is in the hole for $21,365 in unpaid tolls and has accrued $102,141 in fines -- a sum that continues to grow.

"If I could have killed him and gotten away with it, I would have," retired data processor Jean Davis said.

$21,365 in unpaid tolls.

Let’s say it was over a 5 year period.

One has to pay $4,000 a year to travel to NYC!

Give NYC to the Palestinians.

That’s why so many people live in NYC.

They dare not leave and risk passing a toll booth.

The GW Bridge toll alone is 12 bucks.

Perhaps the Verazzano narrows one’s wallet.

It’s an awesome bridge and I’d like to cross it but $13 is a bit steep.

How sweet. A 52 year old guy who still lives off his mom. And a mom who still enables him.

If you actually pay cash for the tolls, a round trip either above or below the Hudson river runs $12. When you "blow through" a toll plaza without paying, they photograph your plates and bill you what I can only assume is a HUGE fine.

The toll to/from Staten Island is $6.50, but the Verazzano is a $13 one way toll.

“Give NYC to the Palestinians.”

Makes the movie “Escape from New York” sound plausible.
The problem is you couldn’t give it away, you would have
to pay some one to haul it off.

When I was in college, I dated a girl who lived on Staten Island, and when we'd go from Stony Brook (Long Island) to her home, as I recall the round trip in tolls was in excess of $20. That was also back in the day of land lines and ridiculous intra-state telephone rates. Calling her home from Stony Brook was substantially more expensive than my calling my family back in Kansas City.

I would imagine the upkeep of the bridge is costly.

It’s so amazing how they built it. It really blows my mind. The math and science needed to plan it was incredible. Those men were hundreds of feet up without a safety harness.

I know there’s no one trapped in the bridge’s concrete. Do you know where that urban legend started?

I guess she missed the data about what was going on with her car? She should have taken the keys back or had the locks changed.

I'm not sure who runs the Verazzano Narrows bridge, but I'm pretty sure it's not the Port Authority. I figure that out of the $12 toll for the GW bridge, Lincoln or Holland tunnels, at least $10 of it goes to graft, with another $1.875 going to incompetence and waste, leaving $0.125 for actual upkeep and improvements.

That photo is from the construction of the RCA (now GE) Building in Rockefeller Center, at the height of the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Note that the lunch boxes are all the same - the conjecture is that the men were given the box lunches in exchange for posing for the photo. OK, I’ll stop hijacking the thread now, but I do love this NY City trivia.

The Verrazano is run by the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (a division of the MTA — Metropolitan Transit Authority).

$13 ($9.60 if you use EZ Pass) to go from Brooklyn to Staten Island, but it’s a one-way toll. Also, there is a discount for Staten Island residents.

Regards,

But it's a fee, not a tax, so it's OK and folks should not complain.....

I had no idea it cost that much to bring a truck over the bridge.

IIRC, in 2015 it will be $15 for a car and $105 for a 5 axle truck.
