Government spy program (UK) will monitor every phone call, text and email (edited title)

Excerpt only: Details about text messages, phone calls, emails and every website visited by members of the public will be kept on record in a bid to combat terrorism. The Government will order broadband providers, landline and mobile phone companies to save the information for up to a year under a new security scheme. What is said in the texts, emails or phone calls will not be kept but information on the senders, recipients and their geographical whereabouts will be saved. Twitter will also be saved and so will information exchanged between players in online video games.

The information will be stored by individual companies rather than the government.

The news has sparked huge concerns about the risk of hacking and fears that the sensitive information could be used to send spam emails and texts.

Nick Pickles, director of privacy and civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch, said: 'Britain is already one of the most spied on countries off-line and this is a shameful attempt to watch everything we do online in the same way.

It’s probably a good time to get to know your neighbours face to face, instead of online.

Even for a country that small, that sounds like a tall order to keep up with all internet traffic including the peculiar protocols of all social and blogging websites.

Are Britons forbidden to use American ISPs with https security for their email? Until the all-cracking quantum computer becomes ubiquitous, that will still be impossible for Big Brother to follow.

Well this is one of the things that happens in a society that depends on a king to take care of their crime. The US is behind this curve only because of what is left of its constitutional tradition, a constitution that was put in place with the ills of a meddling monarch firmly in mind.

Well of course the Communications Capabilities Development Programme smells like pond scum on a hot day.

But you don't have to just blurt it out like that ya know...

:-)

Seems like it would be simpler, and wiser in the long run, to just deport every Muslim from the UK. I know, they’re too suicidally PC to take the one defensive governmental overreach that would actually solve the problem.

The United States is already there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_Assistance_for_Law_Enforcement_Act

Excerpt:

On March 10, 2004, the United States Department of Justice, FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration filed a “Joint Petition for Expedited Rulemaking” in which they requested certain steps to accelerate CALEA compliance, and to extend the provisions of CALEA to include the ability to perform surveillance of all communications that travel over the Internet — such as Internet traffic and VoIP.
As a result, the FCC adopted a “First Report and Order” concluding that CALEA applies to facilities-based broadband Internet access providers and providers of interconnected (with the publicly switched telephone network) Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) services.
In May 2006, the FCC adopted a “Second Report and Order”, which clarified and affirmed the First Order:
The CALEA compliance deadline remains May 14, 2007.
Carriers are permitted to meet their CALEA obligations through the services of “Trusted Third Parties (TTP)” — that is they can hire outside companies, which meet security requirements outlined in CALEA, to perform all of the required functions.
Carriers are responsible for CALEA development and implementation costs.

That was my first thought, my second thought was they have been doing it for many years now.

The wars on drugs, terror, racism, hate and common sense are wars against everything that was right about about America

When I was a child we lived in Florida for a while. My late father, a retired Marine Corps commo chief, worked at Southern Bell. His only job was tapping phone calls for law enforcement and intelligence agencies. That was in the 1960’s. He was not the only one so employed in that building.

Pardon? A somewhat outdated grasp of the British Constitution there, if I may say so...
