This is pretty low. Buzzfeed unearthed a 2008 interview of Santorum endorsing Romney for president and now either Romney or his SuperPAC is robo-calling citizens of Michigan with the same 2008 audio of Santorum’s endorsement. Via Detroit Free Press:

Some Michiganders — this reporter included — got what may have been a surprising call over the weekend: Romney’s chief rival Rick Santorum endorsing Mitt Romney.

The endorsement was in 2008, when Romney was running for president (and Santorum wasn’t). In an interview about the endorsement at the time, Santorum said he hesitated about who to endorse but decided on Romney as the best alternative to John McCain. The robocall was presumably paid for by either the campaign or the Super PAC supporting Romney.

After a short introduction in the automated call to Michigan voters, Santorum says: “If you’re a conservative, there really is only one place to go right now. I would even argue farther than that. If you’re a Republican, if you’re a Republican in the broadest sense, there is only one place to go right now, and that’s Mitt Romney.”

An absolute NO BRAINER what did Santorum expect...I am sure we get an ear full at the next debate too.

If I’m not mistaken, Romney was the favored candidate over McCain at the time. So I don’t consider this endorsement as a good reason to discredit Rick. On the other hand, the Specter endorsement was a catastrophic choice that arguably resulted in a lot of bad law.

But I have since forgiven Santorum for 2008. He’s human.

Btw, when Rick was on Huckabee’s show last month, Huck raked him over the coals about it. “Romney, seriously???” Rick admitted he goofed up big time!!!

Is it so difficult to understand that the context of that endorsement was a “choice” between McCain and Romney? If that’s the best/worst they can throw at Santorum it seems pretty lame. In hind sight, considering what a weak a** general election campaign Snarling John ran, Romney might have been the better choice in a year when anybody the Republicans put up would have had an uphill climb.

What is even worse is how Santorum did not want to support Juanito because he did not support DOMA. Romney, as gov., was a big supporter of same sex marriage, he even had the marriage licenses changed.

Zero cred on the endorsement.

Newt Gingrich told FOX News Saturday that he won’t run for president in 2008.

“For the moment, I’m just going to watch the race,” Gingrich told FOX News in an exclusive interview.

Gingrich would not endorse a specific candidate.

So far as I can tell, he was disengaged from that race — he apparently endorsed nobody at all.

You are correct and people know this. 2008 was a bad year of candidates and we all knew McCain was the weakest. If you go back to that time, most of us on this site were hoping that Romney would defeat McCain. In the four years since, we’ve come to realize that Romney was/is just as bad as Juan.

Everyone involved in politics makes an endorsement or two that he lives to regret; primarily because the person endorsed for one election changes considerably by the next election cycle.

I’ve spent political capital that I’ve later regreted...always because the one endorsed abandoned their ideals and principles.

We don’t know it’s Romney. It could be the Gingrich SuperPac, trying to discredit Romney like the Gingrich supporters here keep doing by harping on this endorsement.

Remember, the goal of the Superpac is no longer to stop Romney, but to stop Santorum. If they can help Romney win Michigan, they will have achieved their goal.

We should know who is doing this, because everybody is supposed to identify their sponsorship in these robocalls — but the article suggests the author didn’t hear that sponsorship, since the article guesses who is running the ad.

I certainly wouldn’t put it past Romney or the Romney superpac either. So many enemies to choose from.

The fact is is that Romney will lick all the septic tank caps in any state if that will win their vote. I am no Rick fan but Romney is the wierdest Republican candidate in my lifetime and his desperation to become President is frightening.
