New Rasmussen poll shows Santorum leading Romney 38%-34% in Michigan primary race.
Rasmussen Reports ^ | Tuesday, February 21, 2012 | Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 02/21/2012 1:05:05 PM PST by DestroyLiberalism

The Michigan Republican Primary is just a week away, and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum is holding on to a small lead over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters in Michigan shows Santorum with 38% of the vote to Romney’s 34%. Well behind are Texas Congressman Ron Paul with 10% support and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at nine percent (9%). Only one percent (1%) prefers some other candidate in the race, while eight percent (8%) are undecided.

The margin between the top two candidates is little changed from last week when Santorum posted a 35% to 32% lead over Romney in the latter's native state. The story was drastically different three weeks ago when Romney coming off his big Florida Primary win led Santorum 38% to 17%.

When the other candidates are taken out of the equation, Santorum leads Romney 47% to 40% in a two-man race in Michigan. That’s a bit closer than Santorum’s 12-point lead last week.

This Michigan survey of 750 Likely Republican Primary Voters was conducted on February 20, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.

“When the other candidates are taken out of the equation, Santorum leads Romney 47% to 40% in a two-man race in Michigan.”

Newt, help us out at least at the debate tomorrow night.

We’re counting on it!

The GOAL is to beat Willard in Michigan with the strongest conservative there.

Now that Ari Fleisher has let the cat out of the bag, that the GOP establishment is switching to Santorum, things are going to get interesting.

Romney will be crying, of course, but nobody is going to be able to claim that Santorum would be an avenue of change.

Now I wished that Santorum would have endorsed Newt in Florida. I am sure that Newt would return the favor in Michigan had he done that. Lost opportunity. I don’t think that Newt will endorse him especially during the debate.

Remember when Romney took a huge crap on Newt at the start of the Florida debates by leveling so many accusations against him that he couldn’t respond? Yeah, he’ll be doing that against Santorum tomorrow night.

I doubt Rick will hold up to it any better than Newt did.

I respect Mitt Romney, but, he is one of these really super-bland people for whom I am left with a burning question,

Yo, you alive or what? I am talkin' to you! Gimme a sign.
Breathe on the mirror. Please.
Anything!

Like what-ho, mates, do they put Botox and Xanax in this guy's Ovaltine, or what? He has a split personality: Namby and Pamby. Mormon? No way! Joseph Smith and his teenage bride corps ... now that, that was a Mormon. Brigham Young, massacring gentile settlers! At least a sign of life. Is this plain vanilla, no-fat, no-sugar Ken-Doll-dweeb a typical Utah Mormon guy? If so it's a damn good thing they have The Book of Mormon. Ain't no way this milquetoast wimp is going to know a normal human woman "...in the Biblical Sense."

ayuh. Get'im outa heah!

Disagree that anything Ari Fleischer says is noteworthy and I think your interpretation is stretching things a lot.

There were some Internet rumors a couple of days ago pertaining to a possible coordination between the Gingrich and Santorum campaigns. I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow evening to see if there was any validity to these rumors.

I disagree.

At this point,we are approaching the midnight hour.

Is this about Newt, or about making sure Mittens doesn’t get nomination?

Were the polling reversed at this point, I would feel Santorum should get out.

The longer we allow Romney to slime and beat up on conservatives, the harder it will be to defeat Obama.

This is going to be an ugly week. I'm already getting robocalled to death from Romney's crew. Romney's back is against the wall and knows that he can't lose this state.

Interestingly delegate wise, the allocation is by congressional district outside of two statewide at large delegates. That means Romney or Santorum could lose the state and win the most delegates.

If Santorum can hang on, Romney could be if not knocked out, forced to fight the rest of the way with a broken jaw. That helps both Santorum and Newt.

The bottom line here is this. Do you want Romney to win here or not? If not, Santorum's the only choice in the Michigan primary.

I ran the "coordination" to one of the few "establishment" Santorum supporters I know. He's very well connected in the Michigan party. He says there's no chance there's a coordination effort between Santorum and Romney. He said that Chuck Yob is supporting Santorum, and Sterling Corp people are running Mitt's campaign. Sterling and Yob have had a feud for 15 years going back to the John Engler years. That's so well known in Michigan that I even knew that.

I see what’s going on as a pincer move on Romney, Santorum in the industrial midwest and Gingrich in the south. Gingich’s strength will depend on his performance in the debate tomorrow.

Keep in mind that Santorum decimated Romney on Romneycare in the last debate. He knows Mitt’s lying game from the last round.

Romney has two conservative opponents and has been severely weakened before Super Tuesday. Even if he wins Michigan, it will be by the skin of his teeth and frankly, I don’t think there will be any more overwhelming victories for him. Also consider the democrats in MI who said they’d be voting for Santorum to foul things up.

There are too many plates in the air to keep track of.

Look for Willard’s surrogant Ron Paul to after Santorum.
I heard him on the radio this morning saying Santorum is no conservative and that he voted for Planned Parenthood and voted four times to raise the debt ceiling. So look for the old man to lash out out Santorum while totally ignoring his boss Willard the liberal. Here’s the truth about the lie that Dennish Kucinish’s big brother is spreading.

How right you are - both mitt/rick are GOP E. His own record shows it but his supporter just mimic what RS says, that's he's conservative which has been laughable. Even now their deception won't allow them to see the truth and/or some are really mitt/GOP E supporters hiding behind another GOP E candidate, slick rick. What Ari said should PO Trump when he rightly insinuated how some two bit former senator, now lawyer, thinks he qualified to run for president. We already have that.

“When the other candidates are taken out of the equation, Santorum leads Romney 47% to 40% in a two-man race in Michigan.”

*************************************

With each successive primary, it becomes more clearly a two man race between Santorum and Romney, with the distinct advantage to Santorum. The first hint of this was the Missouri primary where Newt was not on the ballot.

Willard got squashed 55-25.

Now even though Newt remains on the ballot in Michigan and Arizona, he is basically irrelevant because people do not want to waste their vote. After Michigan and Arizona, as a practical matter, it will be as if Newt is not on the ballot. Those of us who do not want Romney will coalesce around Santorum. Even Newt alluded to this early in the primary season.

In spite of some of the shots Santorum is taking, he is just as conservative as Gingrich (and on some issues such as the individual mandate, he is more so).

He is more electable than Newt because of his strength in the midwest swing states and his appeal to ethnic Catholics there and his much lower negatives.

AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL....SANTORUM IS THE ONLY THING STANDING BETWEEN US AND A ROMNEY NOMINATION.

If it was Newt standing in the breach against Willard, I would be cheering him on as well. But it is Santorum and I am A-OK with that. GO Rick!!

Agreed. I was a Perry supporter, now I’m in Newt’s camp. But I can definitely live with Santorum. We gotta keep our eyes on the big picture here: beat Romney, then Obama.

And as for should Newt endorse Rick in Michigan or should Rick have endorsed Newt in FL, that’s a pretty silly discussion IMHO. This is a primary, and if a candidate is to be seen as viable, they need to at least have the pretense of competing in every state in which they are on the ballot. If one candidate endorsed a competitor in even one specific state, I think it would most likely spell the end of their candidacy.

You’re using your standard lying strawman debating techniques.

I didn’t say that Fleisher endorsed anybody. He said that Romney was fading, and Santorum was rising, and that Romney wasn’t likely to succeed.

That is a total abandonment of the position that Romney was the likely, sensible candidate.

Take your meds.

I didn’t say that Fleisher endorsed anybody.

I realize that I shouldn't waste time responding to some folks, but I'll do it this once:

No, you didn't specifically say that Fleischer endorsed anybody. However, your statement that "Fleisher blew Santorum’s last shred of cover by turning his way." would be interpreted by most folks that way.

Whether you said that Fleischer endorsed anyone or not, you said something far more earthshaking. You said that "Ari Fleisher has let the cat out of the bag, that the GOP establishment is switching to Santorum..."

With regard to what you said, that's kind of a bait and switch; or, as some might say, "standard lying strawman debating techniques".

There are a lot of good-hearted, sincere Newt supporters. I think that the ones that I know would be embarrassed by your posts.

You're not accomplishing anything for your candidate. Is it perhaps that you know that your guy is losing, you can't accept it, and in your bitterness you are determined to leave a scorched earth behind you?

Fleisher said everything he possibly could, short of openly endorsing Santorum. Rush’s interpretation is perfect on this.

Also its not just Fleisher, either Gilespie and a few others, like Mike Doran are puffing Santorum. It is clear that the establishment is positioning for abandonment of Romney, and resting their hopes on Santorum, who has really been a better servant for them than Romney ever was.

Surely you are also aware that Santorum needs over 1,000 plus candidates to get the gop nomination? why in the hell should Newt drop out.
