Theft, deceit and outright lies: How ugly can climate science get?
Prominent climate scientist Peter H. Gleick relied on deceit and subterfuge to solicit a cache of sensitive internal documents from conservative think tank The Heartland Institute before leaking them to the press -- a fresh scandal that further darkens the highly charged debate on planetary climate change.
Gleick -- an internationally recognized hydroclimatologist and author of the respected annual report “The World’s Water” -- said he received an anonymous document in the mail that tipped him off to what he described as Heartland’s efforts to muddy public understanding of climate science and policy. He released the documents to expose their work “to cast doubt on climate science.”
In his blog on the Huffington Post, Gleick publicly confessed to deceitful tactics that he described as a serious ethical slip.
“In a serious lapse of my own and professional judgment and ethics, I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else’s name,” Gleick wrote. “My judgment was blinded by my frustration with the ongoing efforts — often anonymous, well-funded, and coordinated — to attack climate science and scientists and prevent this debate … nevertheless I deeply regret my own actions in this case.”
Following his admission, Gleick's resignation was accepted by the National Center for Science Education. His name appears to have been removed from a Task Force on Scientific Ethics at the American Geophysical Union (AGU), a prominent science organization.
Gleick declined to provide any additional information when contacted by FoxNews.com.
Heartland Institute president Joseph L. Bast blasted Gleick’s confession and actions, which he said put lives at risk and violated individual privacies.

I don’t get what the big deal is in this idiot’s “smoking gun” that Heartland was working on science education to offset global warming propaganda! So what. There is no “scientific consensus.” School children should learn both sides of the story.
He really did this to expose the people involved in funding the heartland institute so his pals could harm them and to permit idenity theft of the employees at Heartland. He’s a radical communist and is raging furious that the watermelon plan of taking over the means of production (global oil use, taxation and price controls) for the whole world is exposed.
There is trillions in money for these climate change “scientists” and their alternative energy shake down pals and their global taxation and carbon market pals. He’s a Fascist power monger, greedy bastard.

I have just waded through many comments on the WUWT thread wattsupwiththat.com/2012/02/21/ncse-accepts-gleicks-resignation/
I was simply reading until a comment at 11:16 by Stephen Rasey went through a tremendous string of analysis and concluded with, “How does E.C. Scott at NCSE come to that conclusion without the faked document or private potentially defaming discussions (from Gleick)? I think Scott at NCSE just opened itself to Heartland discovery motions.”
INDEED! That caught my attention.
A little later, Richdo @12:00 pm goes through another marvelous string of fact that includes, “Chris Mooney at DeSmogBlog was one of the first (if not the first) to publicise NCSE’s climate education initiative launch, … [but] notes “There Is No Clear “Opponent.” In the evolution fight, there was … Discovery Institute[and other]. In the climate education battle, there is no central clearinghouse organization … pushing global warming denial in schools. … So how can [NCSE] manage climate education conflicts profitably …” “- Now we have Gleick, the newly appointed member of NCSE’s board, (appointed specifically because of their new climate initiatives) at the center of a fraud to create a “clear opponent” and provide a wondefull springboard for NCSE’s climate launch.”

So back to read what Joe actually said at 10:03: “So Gleick, in his hubris, attempted to prime the pump for a battle against Heartland that he intended to wage as a board member at NCSE by releasing a fake document that portrayed Heartland as an anti-science organization. This plan had the ultimate effect of undoing Gleick just when he should have been reaching the zenith of his career and casting him in the nadir of his career instead.
It’s a Gleick Tragedy.”
My own opinion has been greatly affected by these posters and I believe if others who have been mulling over this event, it may greatly affect them, too. If I were Heartland, I would immediately subpoena for all NCSE documents and communications with Gleick and Dessmogblog, since it seems clear that NCSE and Gleick have clear motivation for producing that particular fraudulent document given his intended association with them before the incredibly rapid discovery of the fraud.
I urge people to go read the full posts made by those folks since I edited them down to give the gist of their reasoning.
I really do think these thoughts of how deeply NCSE was involved in this bears specific discussion.
I have a sneakin' suspicion that this fraudulent memo was created for the sole reason to provide NCSE a target, and their new golden boy, Gleick.
My opinion on so-called “Global Warming” is the same as Newt Gingrich’s: I know that we don’t have nearly all the facts on this one. What really makes no sense to me is how liberals compare people who disagree with their concensus with those who once insisted the world was flat. Even in the time of Columbus it was possible to prove mathematically that the world was round. Thus far, the scientists who believe the world is getting warmer have been unble to prove their opinion, and so it must remain just that. Even the people I have respected most have turned out to be wrong a good part of the time.

Sara: take a look at post#11 and the posts it refers to for the reason it may turn out to be bigger. There is reason for speculation that NCSE, who had just hired Gleick for the purpose of propagandizing children, could have been involved in the fake memo. Or, at a minimum, NCSE and Desmogblog were apparently mulling over how to generate a “target” for their propaganda activities - a target similar to “Discovery Institute” served for their pro-evolution campaign - and again, a motive for a broader game being played by bigger players than simply Gleick himself. At a minimum, Gleick was not simply frustrated, etc., as he maintained - this was a concerted fraudulent effort to enhance reputation and field of play for both him and NCSE, and it is possible that it involved conspiracy.
He also resigned from NCSE pretty quick, to cauterize the wound maybe?

If watermelons plotted the “sin” of Heartland rejecting school children being taught that global warming doctrines are “settled science”, that is pretty weak. Global warming is not like evolution. It is a new piece of fake science and propaganda that has been slaughtered in the public square in Europe and the US.
Most Americans do not accept man-made global warming claims and solutions. The watermelons are on weak territory and they are desparate trying to reinvent the evolution game they played.
Is there a crime in NCSE forging documents, lying and faking science? Could have fooled me. Liberals do it all the time. As far as I know, liberals running guns to Mexican drug lords and cheating in elections, is fine and dandy, too.

Attacking climate science is “preventing” debate? I thought it WAS debating. It’s called responding and rebutting. I know it’s difficult for dogmatic priests of a secular doctrine to get their brain around this, but people are allowed to disagree with you, and to say why they disagree with you. That’s what’s called debating. If they are not, you are not “debating,” but monologuing, sort of like a super villain in a comic book.
