Santorum: 'I'm not a manager, I'm not a visionary - I'm a guy from a steel town'
Politico ^ | 02/21/12 | Emily Schultheis

Posted on 02/21/2012 6:47:42 PM PST by writer33

"I'm not a manager. I'm not a visionary," he told the crowd in an apparent reference to his GOP rivals Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. "I'm a guy from a steel town who grew up understanding what made this country great and for the years that I've been involved in public life, put my heart and my effort on the line to make this country the kind of country that we all want to hand on to our children and grandchildren."

Santorum also touched on the fight over who's the real "Washington insider," saying the only reason Romney wasn't a Washington politician is because he lost his Senate race in 1994.

"You hear a lot of talk about who's the insider and who's the outsider in this race. There's a guy that's outside of Washington, who was not a senator or a congressman — not because he didn't try — but because he never got elected," he said. In contrast, Santorum added, he was someone who was "an outsider when he was inside" Washington.

WTF? Another example that Santorum doesn't have a clue. A manager and a visionary leader is EXACTLY what this country needs right now! Not some putz in a sweater vest!

That’s where visionary’s belong .

I think you are embarrassed that in your rush to post every article you can about Santorum, you posted one that is indeed very negative.

Or perhaps you really do think of Obama as a visionary - proving that I am right - that you really don’t know what a visionary is.

Snark all you want, admitting to not being a visionary is not a good thing when running for a huge leadership position. Now, if you’re running for town auditor or something, that’s great. The sweater vest will work for that position too.

You continue to prove, with post after post, that you don’t have a damned idea what a visionary is. You did it again. Visionaries are risk takers and yes, as such, they make mistakes. You think you were so cool and so smart by bringing up the Pelosi thing (yawn, like we don’t all know about that) - but actually Newt was trying to be visionary by that.

Now, he was WRONG, and he says now he was wrong - but that’s what visionaries do. They take risks, they are on the edge, and they do make mistakes - and when they do, they admit them, learn, and move on.

You are really clueless on what a visionary is and you prove it with every post.

Anyone that would sit down with someone who is that subversive - Nancy Peolsi - to the American ideal is not someone that can be trusted.

That person has no convictions to his core. You can spin it as a visionary, but it is anything but that. And you continue to prove with every post that you are as arrogant and the “visionary” you claim to support.

Visionary (n): 8. a person who sees visions.

Did you know what a visionary was? Maybe you are thinking of another definition:

Visionary (n): 9. a person who is given to audacious, highly speculative, or impractical ideas or schemes; dreamer.

Or maybe you were thinking of the word as an adjective:

Visionary (a) : 1. given to or characterized by fanciful, not presently workable, or unpractical ideas, views, or schemes: a visionary enthusiast.

No wait. You couldn’t have meant ANY of the advjectives:

2. given to or concerned with seeing visions.
3. belonging to or seen in a vision.
4. unreal; imaginary: visionary evils.
5. purely idealistic or speculative; impractical; unrealizable: a visionary scheme.

Oh wait, I see the problem. Out of the 9 possible definitions of “visionary”, you assume the usage here must have been this one (n):
7. a person of unusually keen foresight.

If only Newt had used that keen foresight to avoid certain living room furniture. He’d have had an easier time this election.

This is an example of why this screwed up Primary system is so poisonous.

Rick, trying to pick up a few votes in some forum where he probably does not even know where he is, and probably physically exhausted, contrasts himself to Romney (the 'Manager") and Newt (the 'Visionary) and ends up sounding like a nothing.

The current primary system (which only exists because of the Commie lead riots in Chicago in 1968) is a prescription for fratricide, not for choosing the best candidate.

And I'll add to that. Washington DC professional "Political Consultants" (i.e. Guns for Hire), who only exist because of this screwed up primary system are more dangerous to our liberties than Al Quida.

They (the political consultants) are all whores who care nothing about the Republic and only about their fees, which is why a presidential election costs billions of dollars today.

They might as well be GEICO and Progressive battling it out with incessant (and stupid) advertisements for car insurance policies.

It's all 'got-ya' not issues. And this nation has big issues that need to be dealt with.

I'm sick of it --- ready to resign and head to the hills and let the world turn without me.

I don’t think it’s as bad as all that. It’s a little annoying that FR could be overrun by those political consultants, so it’s hard to tell when you are getting keen insight, and when you are getting the party line by someone who was paid by a politician.

I find it refreshing when a candidate just says what they think, and not what has been drilled into them as the “politically correct” statements. In that regard, both Gingrich and Santorum are fun candidates.

I am certain the people at the speech knew exactly what Santorum meant by “visionary” in context. Being a visionary isn’t necessarily a bad thing; better as an adjective I guess, a “visionary leader”, than as a noun.

But I don’t feel a strong need for a president who keeps coming up with wild schemes all the time. I’m not as opposed to a manager — the country could use some good management. We need some good ideas, but what we need is a president who can recognize good ideas, not one that HAS the good ideas.

That’s why you would hire an “ideas man”. Reagan may have been considered “visionary”, but he was a communicator, and a smart man who recognized good ideas when he saw them. Gingrich is the guy you want on your staff, because a good leader will recognize the 1 good idea out of 5 and be able to act on it. Gingrich’s flaw is that he thinks all his ideas are great, and acts on them all.

I’d still much prefer Gingrich over Obama as President — I just still don’t see him actually winning the nomination, or being able to beat Obama. I’m hopeful Santorum can; I don’t know he can, I’m just less pessimistic about his prospects — so far, he’s survived the attacks, but we’ll see.
