Valérie Pécresse, the French government spokeswoman, identified the dead as Marie Colvin, an American reporter working for The Sunday Times of London, and Rémi Ochlik, a French photographer.

-excerpt-

Video footage posted on social networking sites showed what seemed to be two bodies lying face down in rubble inside a building identified in news reports as a makeshift media center in a beleaguered neighborhood of Homs, where rebels have been under sustained fire for almost three weeks. Three other Western journalists were injured in the attack, activists said.

According to his Web site, Mr. Ochlik, in his late twenties, had covered wars and upheaval in Haiti, Congo and the Middle East. Ms. Colvin, 55, was a veteran of many conflicts from the Middle East to Chechnya and from the Balkans to Iraq and Sri Lanka, where she lost an eye covering a civil war. She wore a distinctive black eyepatch. Both had won awards for their work.

Journalists wear no special armor.

Yes, but just like “NATO Troops”, when AMERICAN journolisters are killed, the are “Western” journalists.

This is a civil war, the rebels don’t wear uniforms or necessarily carry arms openly. The reporters are indistinguishable from rebels and mix with them and must assume the same risks. The regime would probably be correct in identifying the reporters as allies of the rebels, despite what you think about the regime. I favor the rebels, but if I travel to Syria and take up their cause, I can expect to be shot at.

I do not favor the Rebels simply because Assad has allowed Christians to live in Syria, when the Muslims take over they are dead ducks.

To me replacing a bad leader like Assad with someone worse is not an option.

Replacing one bad regime with another is accomplishing nothing.

More here - states another American woman journalist is seriously injured. May have been a targeted attack as 10 rockets hit the house.

Having watched many videos off Algezeera/Reuters/ etc. much of Assad's fire consists of indiscriminate shelling. However, the fact that this building was widely known as housing journalists, pretty much indicates it was targeted. Nowadays, cell phone signals draw fire. However, I think her condemnation of Assad may have lead to her being specifically targeted.

I did note the presence of quite a few ZSU-23 AA guns in/near Homs. Obviously the FSA/rebels have no aerial assets. Assad is using AA guns to hose down apartment buildings, businesses, any sort of "movement." Assad is a chip off the old block.

Saw a report that a 3rd journalist has died. May have been the American reported to be in serious condition.

Yes, he’s a chip of the old block.

I don’t have sympathy for these reporters. They go to Syria in an effort to give completely biased and one-sided coverage that is used to promote American world-policing. They claim Assad is massacring his people and don’t give the true account that this is a tribal-interreligious conflict between the sunni majority and the alawite ruling class and other minorities. Politicians like McCain or Graham cling to reports they make as proof America needs to get involved in Syria and get into another unconstitutional war.

Leave Syria to its own devices! It’s none of the west’s business to interfere in another country’s civil war.

Exactly! Why do we think there are good guys and bad guys in these fights? They are all bad guys, and we should stay out of it. Or are we going to borrow more money from the Chinese to install some new Muslim tyrant, who promises to be our buddy as long as the money and the protection last?

Uh oh. They didn’t mind when they killed the little people. That makes the story more interesting. But now Assad’s gone and done it. He’s killed people who MATTER!/s

ZSU-23 AA

Dunno if that's the exact system I saw, but when I did I thought, Yes. Should work very well in urban combat.

Yes, well, I'm sure I'm suitably saddened by the loss of both these two prima donnas, neither of whom I have ever heard of before.

May they rest in peace...or whatever.
