MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is calling for 20 percent across-the-board cuts in personal income tax rates as part of a program to help the economy grow.

Under the proposal, the top personal income tax rate would fall to 28 percent, according to a summary provided by Romney's campaign.

A thought in the right direction, but again this is from say anything to get elected Romney. I don’t think honestly believes it. Just trying to get some votes.

Romney is all about big government. Don’t think for a second that he is not a Socialist.

Not that long ago Mitt was talking about how he would only cut taxes for the middle class. It appears Mitt has flip-flopped on yet another position, how can anyone believe him?

This proposal would actually make our income tax situation more progressive. Instead of 50% of Americans paying no federal income taxes, that percentage would increase to what? 55%? 60% paying no income taxes? On the other hand, coming out for a flat tax would have been a bold stroke that could, perhaps, have turned things around for Romney.

I heard his quote on Rush where he said that he would cut the rates, but decrease the deductions for the top 1% (yes, he did say top 1%) so they continue paying their fair share. Just when I thought I wouldn't need another reason to vote against Mitt, he opens up one of his mouths and give me a new reason.

My effective tax rate is only 8.74% because of various deductions and retirement savings.

If someone proposes a flat tax I may have to pinch them. It would be an increase for me.

NOW he starts telling us what he’s going to do for us instead of merely trashing the other candidates.

No thanks Mitt. You’re getting panicked and will say anything.

I haven’t researched it to confirm it yet, but Limbaugh today said that Romney’s plan includes some provisions to insure that the top 1% don’t benefit and will insure that the 1% PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE.

The DUFUS Romney thus would join Obama and the Obamamites in class warfare.

Just heard him say this on fox, had a good laugh. More lies from a desperate candidate.

He’s such a fake!

I heard Romney's words. My interpretation is he means for the 20% accord the board cut to be, in a sense, revenue neutral. The "top earners" get their 20% rate cut but would lose some deductions to avoid increasing the deficit.

Newt offers an alternative 15% flat tax based on the successful Hong Kong dual system model.

With Newt you can keep your 8.74% by filing under the existing code if that works best for you.

The others aren't offering an alternative to the existing tax code, just nibbling around its edges.

I don’t trust candidates who change their plans for America, as they are trudging along. It only proves they weren’t ready for the task in the first place.

Newt is ready for the White House. He has been preparing himself for that. Read his “21st Century Contract With America”

http://www.newt.org/contract/

“In an age where massive pieces of legislation are written in secret and passed before anyone has time to understand their contents, it is my hope that this open process of developing the 21st Century Contract with America will help restore the bonds of trust between the American people and their elected representatives.

This is a larger and more complex developmental challenge than any Presidential campaign has undertaken in modern times. The scale will seem impossible to some and grandiose to others. However, I believe it is the minimum necessary to mobilize the American people, change the entrenched elites and their system, and get America back on the right track.

That’s why I’m asking Americans to be with me, not just for me, because it will take all of us, working together, to change Washington and to save our country.”

— Newt Gingrich
