(Reuters) - Russia warned Israel on Wednesday that attacking Iran would be a disastrous and played down the failure of a U.N. nuclear agency mission to Tehran, saying there is still a chance for new talks over the Iranian atomic program.
"Of course any possible military scenario against Iran will be catastrophic for the region and for the whole system of international relations," Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told a news conference.
It was one of Russia's starkest warnings against resorting to force, an option Israel and the United States have not ruled out if they conclude that diplomacy and increasing sanctions will not stop Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.
"I hope Israel understands all these consequences ... and they should also consider the consequences of such action for themselves," Gatilov said. "I hope a realistic approach will prevail, along with a sensible assessment."

Yeah, that should have been stopped, but it wasn’t. Each Islamic nation that gets hold of a nuke if a multiplying factor that increases the likelihood that we eventually see a mushroom cloud rising above an Israeli or western city at some point in the not too distant future...
If Russia’s so concerned about global ‘catastrophe’ and ‘the whole system of international relations’ why don’t they stop kissing Iran’s ass and push them to scrap their atomic bomb preparations?
The other thing I heard some expert saying once was that Russia’s policy seems to be to keep all of the Middle Eastern states stirred up internally and against each other as a way of diverting Islamist attention away from them.
Russia is a toothless old lion and doesn’t matter.
Iran is right across the Caspian Sea from Russia and thus in its backyard. There is a lot of trade between the two countries.
Attacking Iran to Russia might be analogous to Russia attacking Mexico...

I wouldn't bet on the USA-Israel part. Under Obama it is more likely to be Russia-Iran vs. Israel with the US leaking strategic Israeli information to Iran and Russia.

Many fantasize about an "end times" war and get jazzed about it.
If they get what they want, tens of millions - in Western Civilization, let alone the Middle East - will die horribly as the whole thing escalates to a previously-unprecedented scale.
And those who pursued it by falsely claiming Christianity as a rationale will be looking for a new messiah amongst the radioactive rubble, and will not find one.
Fortunately for the rest of this country, what you want is NOT relevant to what will come to pass, and you can take that to the bank!
Don't follow what you say here. Really, the question is why does Russia NEED to team up with Iran (eventually against Israel)?
I thought up until recently that Israel would make a pre-emptive strike.
I now think it more likely that The Great Middle East War will begin with a missile
barrage against Israel from Gaza, Lebanon and Syria. With so many bio and chem
weapons having been unleashed upon the world because of the Arab spring fiasco
it will be too tempting to use the liberated Libyan and Syrian weapons and so
they will be fired at Israel.
Israel will respond with a barrage of neutron weapons to kill everything near
all enemy launch sites. Rinse/repeat as needed.
Israel will then take off the gloves, she will at that moment stand on the world stage
as a strategic equal with the USA, Russia, China and France in the ability to deliver
city buster thermonuclear weapons on any city in the world. Israel has the nuclear
stockpile and the delivery systems to place them directly on any location. the fact that
Russia has far more deliverable nuclear weapons only means they can make the rubble
bounce longer...it does not mean their arsenal is more powerful since Israel can
if pushed destroy all large Russian cities.
Israel will point the finger of blame for the use of the chem/bio weapons at Iran
since it will be Iran’s proxies firing them.
Israel will IMO at this point utterly destroy south Lebanon and the major cities of
Syria and Iran. You simply do not get to walk away from an attempt to once again
gas the Jews.
The great danger at this point, with Iran, Syria and Lebanon destroyed is that Russia
could make the mistake of moving against Israel... this would be the start of a world war.
IMO Israel probably has battlefield neutron weapons and selectable yield thermonuclear weapons that can be delivered by sub launched cruise missiles, cruise missiles launched from stealthy long-range drones, and also deliverable worldwide using the same launch vehicles they use to orbit satellites. No city can be protected from such an arsenal using today’s anti-missile technology.
Some people kid themselves that the Israeli arsenal is rather low tech compared to Russia’s or ours. Don’t be fooled, after all it was basically a bunch of Jews that created nuclear tech back in the 40’s. Nuclear ambiguity
has been Israel’s tactic for decades but I don’t doubt what they are capable of.
I think you hit on the point. Russia will make big bucks when oil skyrockets after the oil is shut off from the middle east.
Of course we could build a nice pipeline that would assist us to become oil/energy independent, but that is too hard for our winner of a President to see as a security issue.
