The Heavens Opened, and Behold, a White Horse

Sen. Orrin Hatch is speaking Mormon code again to conservatives in Southern Utah. Rolly reports that Hatch told a breakfast gathering in St. George on Saturday that “I would be letting down my Father in Heaven if I didn’t run again.” I understand. The Ayatollah Khomeini felt exactly the same way.

This mix of church and state is found a lot in Utah. Perhaps there's something in the water. In 1993, Michael J.S. Thompson, running for Orem city council, told residents that their support for his opponents thwarted God's plans. In 2006 Eagle Mountain businessman John Jacob (running against Rep. Chris Cannon) told a group of journalists that the devil was trying to keep him out of office. Bennion Spencer, a Democrat running against Jason Chaffetz, said that Jesus would vote for him if he had the chance.

It's always risky to drag deity directly into politics. Perhaps a higher power has been at work in America's history, but individual claims of knowing the mind of God are always dubious. It's reasonable to assume, for instance, that Satan's interference with Jacob's campaign meant that God didn't want him in Washington.

All this ties indirectly to a supposed utterance by Mormon prophet Joseph Smith known as the "White Horse Prophecy." Legend holds that Smith predicted the Constitution would one day "hang by a thread" and would be rescued by Mormon elders. Ever since, various Mormon elders have been styling themselves as the men for the job. Hatch used the "hang by a thread" language in a meeting with the Herald editorial board some years back, and in fact, the phrase crops up regularly in Mormondom. Glenn Beck, for instance, sent out the code in an interview with Bill O'Reilly in 2008: "We are at the place where the Constitution hangs in the balance. I feel the Constitution is hanging in the balance right now, hanging by a thread unless the good Americans wake up."

Never mind that the Constitution has been hanging by a thread ever since the nation's birth. Ever hear of Andrew Jackson and that little problem of nullification? Every hear of the Civil War? Conservative politics is getting so radical these days -- including a generous dose of religion everywhere you turn -- that it ought to be asked whether one can be a good Mormon and a Republican.

I guess in his mind he wants to be there when Romney fulfills the white horse prophesy.

I despise RINOmney.

Because he is a RINO...not because of his faith.

Let’s keep the religion out of it...unless we’re talkin’ about the Ayatollah Obamaloon.

Romney is who he is because of mormonism not in spite of it.
If you do not understand mormonism, you will not understand Romney.

So...it’s ok to mention 0bama’s “faith” and “religion” and how they made him who he is, but it’s not ok to do the same with Romney?

" Let’s keep the religion out of it...unless we’re talkin’ about the Ayatollah Obamaloon. "

apparently the mormons themselves dont keep religion off the table

when it suits their purpose

and when it doesn't the bigot card appears and the victim flag flies

Have you ever questioned Obama's suitability because of his religious views or who he looked to for religious guidance?

It should concern you that Romney happens to think that the elected leader of his church is a prophet of God. What happens if Romney is elected and this false prophet of God calls him up and asks him to do something that we disagree with?

You think he's going to listen to us or a man he thinks is a prophet of God?

I would no sooner vote for a Mormon than I would a Scientologist or a Muslim.

I just had a “discussion” (another blog) with a mormon, who told me that there is no such thing as the “white horse prophesy”, it is something Christians cooked up to lie about lds.
Weird.

The only good news about the direction of this thread is that it’s going to take the pressure off the Jews for a little while. And speaking as a Jew myself, a lot of what I hear about the Mormons reminds me directly of what I used to hear (and still here in some quarters) about the Jews - you know, clannish wierdos with strange religious practices, a not-so-secret rich elite, odd ways of doing things, a questionable association with Americans despite their own pleadings to the contrary. Instead of that little beenie cap, the magic underwear.

Not that I’m particularly enamored with Mittens. He reminds me of the Rockerfeller Republicans who used to roam my home state of Connecticut, and who went extinct following the Reagan years.

The man I really miss at moments like this is Barry Goldwater. I had the rare pleasure of actually talking with the man on several occasions when he visited American University, and I credit those conversations to leading me to places like this. Mittens, though... as my grandfather would say, he’s a putz.

If you do not understand Black Liberation Theology, you do not understand obama. He HATES the America of our founding fathers, and he must be defeated.

You guys got pressure?

Be DAMNED glad you ain't a SLC mormon!!!

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;

and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,

and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.

Brigham Young - JoD 3:266 (July 14, 1855)

That is what I'd call PRESSURE!!!

He HATES the America of our founding fathers, and he must be defeated.

Then it behooves us CONSERVATIVES to make sure we have a candidate that CAN 'defeat' him; doesn't it!?

FR is almost unamious in the thought that ROMNEY canNOT defeat him.

He would be SAVAGED in the LEFTist media we have in this country and the 'undecideds' would be QUITE DECIDED by election day!

i think Jews are in the mainstream enough that the average informed person doesn't have those stereotypes

prob w the lds is the better you know them, they truly are clannish and weird, they use clannish and weirdness like a tool

theres lots of mormons and exmormons both at exmormon.org lots of stories of day to day life in the morg

i was born into lds all my family is in the church i've been out 30yrs only my 82yo mother keeps contact...i was the oldest and obedient in every other way until i sincerely questioned mormon teaching and then i was a liability

dont believe me...go to the site youll get an idea...the joyful mormon is a thin veneer

one small statistic for you...assuming the mormons are such exalted beings

and given that utah on their own state.gov website is 70-75% mormon

then why (in a 2005 study) does it show that, per capita, utah is:

#1 in murders

#1 in child abuse cases

#1 in bankruptcies

#1 in mental health issues

#1 in antidepressant use

#1 in consumption of internet porn

the deseret news when these figues came out first disputed then ascribed it to the non-mormons in the state...statistically implausible

i can get the references to back it up, but seeing as i can find this out with no net connection other than an old cellphone, it feels kind of useless whentheres all the experts on what mormons are all about, who apparently haven't done a fingerclick of research before reaching their conclusions

the mormons know more about propaganda than goebbels ever did...people feel bigoted to even do research

google "mormon teachings" and see the party line

google "exmormon teachings" and its 1984 written in a religious context

find out for yourselves...two thumbs and a samsung here (i live on a sailboat a pc is impractical)

a recent thread on fr where mormons and exes have a discussion...youll notice the friendly mormon facade turns to adhominems and 'youre a liar' mudslinging entirely on the mormon side, immediately

then when confronted with references and facts, crickets

Jews, as a rule, don't claim to be Christians. Mormons do.
