Rick Perry spent his first day on the campaign trail as a Newt Gingrich surrogate, sticking closely to his talking points that Gingrich is the only true conservative left in the race.
The Texas governor spoke on several national radio shows and on CNNs John King USA before visiting the post-debate spin in Mesa, Ariz.
Perry had a busy afternoon in the Valley of the Sun with live interviews with King, Michael Medved, Rusty Humpheries and Hugh Hewitt. Similar themes came through in all of his interviews, as he promoted Gingrich as the true conservative and took time to promote his home state.
Perry endorsed Gingrich on Jan. 19 after dropping out of the race himself. On the GOP core issues of a strong military, fiscal conservatism and unquestionably pro-life views, Gingrich is the only candidate who stands by the right wing of the Republican Party on all of them, Perry said in his interviews today.
Newts the real deal, he told John King. Hes the real fiscal conservative, hes the real social conservative, hes the real 10th amendment believing and breathing individual on the stage.

Newt was top dog in tonight’s debate. ;-)
They all looked pretty good but Newt was brilliant. I will vote for him without a doubt that he is the best of the field we have to choose from.
Even with his personal baggage, Newt is the best prepared for the job. And the Left and the Press hates him. If he can take advantage of that with the sane people, he will win.
Thank you Gov. Rick Perry!!
NBC news is actually saying Newt did well and played the Saudi Arabian Bow quip. I was surprised.
I completely agree! Mr. Newt was the adult on the stage tonight. Solid and specific ideas as to how to get our country back to work. All the back and forth between Romney and Santorum was almost and embarrassment for both of them as well as our party. Of course, if you listen to the pundits...Romney was clearly the winner! Why? His ideas were wrong for Massachusetts, and they are wrong for America. His so-called management experience is not going to work unless he knows how to get things done within the halls of congress. He will not be able to just wave his hands and bark orders. Congress will not put up with that. These are three equal branches of government who do not like to have orders thrown at them.
Mr. Newt not only has the bold ideas, but also knows how to maneuver the obstacles in congress to bring those ideas to fruition. Mr. Newt also knows how to create those partnerships within the House and Senate, left and right, to accomplish what needs to be done. I want to scream every time I hear Santorum taking credit for welfare reform. Without Mr. Newt’s leadership, welfare reform would never have become a reality. It was Mr. Newts leadership that forced a liberal president to make training a part of obtaining welfare. It was Mr. Newts leadership that brought about Republican control of the House with the Contract For America. It was Mr. Newts leadership that formed a partnership with those running for the House to make the election a team effort. It was Mr. Newts leadership that brought about tax cuts and four years of balanced budgets. Santorum will get eaten up by the liberal press he does not stand a chance. By August, it will be too late to correct his mistakes, and we will be forced to live with 4 more years of Obama.
I am with Mr. Newt that the critical times we are in do not justify another amateur. Santorum and Romney are amateurs with very large egos. Yadda yadda yadda! I hope the American people open their eyes to reality before it is too late!
He has released a new video today if you are interested and it explains his views on energy and independence. The link is here.
