PITTSBURGH -- A Churchill man adopted the dog police said killed an infant last week in McKeesport.
The man, who did not want to be identified, said he and the baby's father made a deal on Tuesday. Howard Nicholson signed the husky over to him and he paid the dog catcher fees and veterinary bills for the dog's broken leg.
"Allegheny County and the dog catcher deemed him safe for release. They weren't putting the dog down, so we said we will relieve you of the financial burden. We want the husky to get proper medical care and a proper home," the man said.
The man told Channel 11's Renee Kaminski that he understand how some may be shocked that he wanted the animal that mauled a 3-day-old child, but he said he believes the dog did it because of the poor circumstances it was under.

When I was a kid we adopted a husky that had killed a couple of hogs. The family had recently had a baby.
That dog was fantastic.
I’d never leave her alone with a baby though.
Just from personal experience, our vet recommends that families with young kids should stay away from Chows, Pits, Rotts and Huskies. This is just from stats (I think).
Any beast that mauls a child to death should be summarily and instantly put to death. Period.
That includes the two-legged variety.
Doggie ping?
I’m sorry, but this is just bizarre.
“poor circumstances” hhmmmm
No kidding! I don’t give a da*n about extenuating circumstances.
My person opinion is that any dog should be watch with a young infant. They are dogs and view smaller items as prey so in reality any dog is capable of killing an infant if supervision isn’t a constant and close watch of where the infant and dog is at all times.

“... any dog should be watched with a young infant”.
I totally agree. Even with toddlers/pre-schools kids. Many little ones can accidentally fall on a dog and a dog bite as a reaction. Or, they may not tolerate a tug on an ear etc... It is always safer (IMHO) to never leave little ones alone with a dog.
Allegheny Cty deemed the dog safe for release? Wow. I hope they are prepared for a whopping bill when this dog hurts or kills someone else and Allegheny Cty is found negligent for letting it go free.
I cannot imagine how anyone could let any animal that had killed a human go free. The only possible thing to do is put down the animal immediately.
Hmm. Yes, it’s really stupid to put an infant down with any dog, especially a large dog. But, once the dog has killed a child, why would you adopt it out? I love dogs, but this country has gone insane. We don’t have a dearth of dogs. Unless a dog is protecting his people, a dog who kills should be put to sleep.
From the article “He’s a dog. He was adopted two weeks prior and put into a pack with three other dogs. He broke his leg and had a homemade contraption on him. It wasn’t set right. He’s at the bottom of the food chain and the mother put a baby on the floor in front of him,” said the man.”
There is more than enough blame to go around here. Irresponsible owners and a shelter that adopts out to anyone to keep their “no-kill” statistics up. Dad adopts a new dog two weeks before new baby arrives when he already has three dogs, new dog breaks leg, and he doesn’t bother to get it proper care. Then, mom puts the new baby on the floor in front of the hurt dog. I’m really sorry the child is dead, but I’m not thinking the dog should be killed in retaliation.
I agree with you. There are so many Freepers who reflexively call for the killing of animals that may not have deliberately set out to kill anyone or anything.
Circumstances don’t matter to these people.
The German Shepherd rescue I volunteer for will not place certain dogs if the adopters have smaller children. Most of the time it is because the dog has jumping on people issues but sometimes the dog has food and toy possession issues.
The German Shepherd I am fostering cannot be placed with families with smaller children or people with disabilities because he is too strong for them (not a jumper or possessive).
You are an absolute doll for fostering and working with an organization that helps dogs get adopted. I know one elderly gentleman that adopted from a GSD rescue. The two of them were best buddies from day one. By buddies, I mean they even had ice cream together each night. Both of their lives improved via the rescue/adoption.
I fostered ten for the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (two were for a weekend only and they were adopted) since October 2010. The rescue pays for the food and vet care while you are fostering them.
The Obama economy caused many German Shepherds to become homeless. The rescue was able to get 400 adopted last year and on par for the same this year. At least four of my fosters were victims of people losing their homes.
Here is a great way to help the GSROC, there is no paid staff and does not accept government funding:

This is horrifying. An animal like that needs to be put down.
The “mother” is an idiot and shouldn’t be procreating. Fine. Sterilize her.
Kill the dog first. This isn’t that hard.
Give me a gun or a ballpin hammer
I will kill the damned dog
WTF is wrong with people?
one of my big bulldogs bit one of my boys bad...i almost killed the dog..damn I loved the old boy too much
instead gave him to my hoghunting buddy down near Okefenokee...he is very lucky I had to drive 60 miles to get home and cool down and the boy begged me not to
when i was a boy you shot any pet that hurt folks
but kill a person....kill the damn dog...I cannot believe that
any dog in state of Tennesse...and we are hicks with badassed dogs to match our guns and purty cousins..we love fighting type and protection dogs..I admit it
a dog hurts a kid requiring a serious hospital stay of over 24 hours and it is mandated the dog is exterminated
doesn't matter how
“oh it's ok the mom pu the baby in front of the dog”
hence it's not the poor dogs fault
“don't kill it for retaliation”
I swear sometimes I understand why we get ridiculed here and this is one of them
Geezuss
I'm 54 and have had over half dozen tuff dogs from Alsatians to black face Rotts to Hoyt Dobies to Huge American Bulldogs..both Southern Standard and Johnson lines
and I have had many of my toddlers...5 in total..lie on my dogs...sleep with them ...ride em like horsies
yet these dogs would or will kill you if provoked...one almost did kill an Amish home invading rapist in Gainesville Fl in 1989...saved my girlfriends life
but none of these dogs attacked toddlers for playing
but if they had I woulda killed em quick
i am flabberghasted the depth that animal idoltry sinks to even here
Dog that killed baby set to be euthanized
Husky's new owner vows to appeal
i love dogs but i completely agree with you
its an issue you have to be a hard case about, when a dog kills a child its programmed wrong
you can feel sorry for the dog but you have to put it down
we used to have a problem with wild dogs in the country
everything from german shepherds to little schnauzers even dogs that still had collars on them
they would come on a farm and murder everything
come and leave like ghosts no barking or anything looking for anything they could kill
a wolf in a pack is programmed he acts like a wolf
a domestic dog has no programming other than what humans give it
and it can go wrong, people who think they can love it back are often trying to love back a silent killer waiting for a brain trigger to be tripped
btw ‘murder everything’ means livestock, and other dogs
sometimes a dog joined them, sometimes they killed it
