Analysis: Can United States defuse Koran burning uproar?

After a third day of bloody protests over the burning of the Koran, there is a sense that America is lurching from one image crisis to the next in Afghanistan, with no clear path for U.S. officials to defuse the latest uproar.

President Barack Obama apologized on Thursday for the burning of copies of the Koran on a U.S. base in Afghanistan, an incident that has triggered far more outcry than another shocking incident: the emergence of a video last month showing Marines urinating on the corpses of what appear to be dead Taliban fighters.

Obama's apology over the Koran burning has been accompanied by other steps by the U.S. military meant to show remorse over what it sees as a tragic blunder. The Pentagon detailed new outreach to Muslim leaders, and the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has promised training on the proper handling of religious materials as well as a swift investigation.

But analysts are doubtful more can be done to calm Afghans incensed by the destruction of Islam's holy book.

Instead, outrage in Afghanistan may have to simply run its course, leaving America to grapple with any fallout on its delicate campaign to foster reconciliation and forge a long-term security agreement with Afghanistan. …

The Taliban has urged Afghans to target foreign military bases and kill Westerners in retaliation and, on Thursday, a man wearing an Afghan army uniform opened fire on two American servicemembers. NATO has declined to say if the shooting was connected to the protests.

President Hamid Karzai's office said on Thursday it wanted NATO to put on public trial those responsible. …

Burning the Quran is a waste of perfectly good fire.

We should be torching a mosque over there for every soldier of ours that dies. Apologies for burning a heretical manual what the F ever.

These protests are ginned up. If a Koran is written in it is considered desecrated. Each of these was written in. The proper way to dispose of a desicrated koran is ........ wait for it........ Thats right burning.

The Won needs to grow a pair (or borrow Mooshelles) and tell Karzai to STFU.

OK, if these schmucks don’t like us, BRING OUR FOLKS HOME
and let them resume murdering one another. A few more years of that and we’ll have a lot fewer of them to worry about.

"If they still don’t respect us, they will damned sure fear us."

That won't happen. Americans have become too civilized (read soft/weak) to deal effectively with the uncivilized. In this part of the world the word respect is synonymous with the word fear. If you want these people to behave, you must first kill half of them and then the remaining half just might behave. If they don't, then you just may have to halve them again. We aren't going to do that, so we just may as well leave.

One wonders what the respectful way to dispose of a copy of the Koran is. Flags and Bibles are destroyed by fire, in a show of respect. I’m not sure what the procedure for the Koran is, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is supposed to destroyed by fire too.

If that is true, I’d simply state that we chose to dispose of the Koran in the manner that is most respectful, by fire. No disrespect was intended.

Then I’d tell the angry masses to either accept it, or deal with the consequences.

I’ve had it up to here with manipulative followers of Islam. I happen to respect Christ, but I’m not out killing people if they don’t.

Churchill also said, “more rubble, less trouble”, words with great relevance to our work in that irredeemable sh*thole.

my understanding is that prisoners were using korans to pass messages, that we confiscated these korans and replaced them, then burned those used to send messages?

am i misinformed?

if not, doesn’t that add a distinctly different flavor to the ‘burned a few korans’ story?

Yes we can...Pull every serviceman out and reduce the whole place to little more than a burnt out cinder. Then have a military rally around the White House demanding an apology form Zero as he’s led away in chains. Just my silly thoughts on the subject.

Actually the Islamic doctrine has not changed since about 636 AD.

I agree- on 9/12/01, two nukes on Medina and Mecca would have solvced their world domination plans in one day.

Since 636 AD, the spread of Islam has only been stopped by an overwhelming show of force.

Until our culture comes to grip with this fact, Islam will continue to make inroads here, in its unquenchable drive to dominate other cultures and make them submit to Islam.
