Syphilis cases are up in gay men, according to the Delaware Department of Public Health.
76 cases of syphilis were reported to the Health Department last year. Nearly all of them were diagnosed among gay men, and the majority of those cases were in New Castle County. The department says this may be part of a rising trend in syphilis among gay men throughout the country, as increases in cases have been reported in cities such as New York, Miami, San Francisco and Chicago.
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease thats transmitted from contact with an infected person. The disease can go for years without showing any symptoms, and can lead to neurological and cardiovascular problems, among others. The Health Department says that safer sex practices and STD testing play a major role in preventing and treating the disease. The department says syphilis can be treated with just a single shot of penicillin.
Gay Men Particularly Hard Hit
Safer Sex Practices and More Testing Vital
The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) reported today a sharp increase in Syphilis cases among men who have sex with men (MSM). In 2011, 76 cases of early syphilis were reported to DPH compared with 23 cases for the same time period in 2010. Over 90% of these cases were among MSM with the majority occurring in New Castle County.
The Delaware data demonstrates the vital role that safer sex practices and sexually-transmitted disease testing play in prevention and treatment.
The increase is cases may be part of a larger trend across the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), increases among MSM have been reported in Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Southern California, Miami, and New York City over the past several years. In these cases, a corresponding high rate of Human Immunodeficiency (HIV) co-infection have also been documented in these outbreaks, ranging from 20 percent to 70 percent.
Although syphilis infection occurs from persons with syphilitic sores who are in the early stages of the disease, many of these sores are unrecognized. Thus, transmission may occur from persons who are unaware of their infection. Many people infected with syphilis in the later stages do not have any symptoms for years, yet if untreated, can lead to damage throughout the body including neurological and cardiovascular complications. Syphilis also increases the risk of HIV infection and, for women, can cause problems during pregnancy and for the newborn.
In most cases, syphilis is easily treated with a single injection of penicillin. Penicillin will also stop syphilis infection in contacts that may not yet show symptoms or signs.
Correct in the initial infection (less than a year) otherwise it will need a course of injections for a cure.
Necessity for FREE condoms.
The had to eat the apple off the forbidden tree. God warned against this.
Next: “We All Have Syphilis” TV ads.
“Gay Men Particularly Hard Hit”
Some headlines just write themselves..
Remember the old joke from the 80s where the gay guy comes out of the Doctor’s office jumping for joy exclaiming, “It’s Syphilis!!!”
10K runs for the cure with the slogan, “Do a lap for the clap.”
Then there’s the brown ribbons...
No, but it’s a good one!
I lived outside Kensington, a homo neighborhood actually closer to downtown San Diego off Balboa Park, 2nd & Laurel, in the early `80s and was on the outside looking in on that lifestyle.
They used to run these TV ads with these stick-figure guys looking into the camera with their ashen faces, cheeks all sunken, all spotted—really sad cases. But they didn’t tell you what they did to look like that.
LOL!! Won’t be able to sleep now after that laugh.
Anybody remember ‘Count Spirochete’?
The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) reported today a sharp increase in Syphilis cases among men who have sex with men (MSM).
I mean is this a surprise?
Sounds like Typhoid Harry.
O my, what a surprise. not
Oral penicillins do not work for syphilis?
So that’s what ‘the clap’ is. I knew it was an STD but I wasn’t sure which one.
Next up in the news: water is wet and the sun is hot.
Being gay is the single most unhealthful decision that a male can make (other than drinking gasoline). As I understand it, it shortens your life expectancy more than smoking and you are likely to be sick for a much greater proportion of your life.
If more parents would explain that to their kids (particularly boys), we might not have such a problem.
Be better and easier on the country's medical system if the queers would jut put a gun to each other's heads and be done, but this will work long term.
How about the one where two Gays are walking past a funeral home and one says to the other, would you like to stop in for a cold one.
We have to pay a premium on insurance if we want to smoke. What are the chances being gay will get the same treatment?
“The clap” is Gonorrhea.
Actually it's gonorrhea but I needed a rhyme.
No. Oral Tetracycline, azythromycin and Doxycycline can be used in those that have penicillin allergy. However, the standard of treatment is Benzathine Penicillin intramuclar injection.
The thing is, obviously they are running about, having rampant sex, and syphillis is not the only thing that is likely getting spread about.
The same article recommended that even in "exclusively monogamous" homosexual relationship that both "partners" should use a condom - every time.
Imagine applying this same demand to normal married couples. We'd be nearly extinct in a few decades.
Yes, there is a "cocktail" of diseases that homos are prone to, just like there is a cocktail of drugs to try to make them live a little longer.
I saw a post by a gay man recently somewhere on the net where he was saying ‘what do you want to get married for’ and running down married life as boring and antiquidated.
I’m sure that is the real opinion out there in larger numbers of these men. As you pointed out, even when they marry, it doesn’t reflect the marriage we all think of as ‘marriage’.
Distressing, and if Obama gets reelected, we will all be paying for these diseases with Obamacare.
So thats what the clap is. I knew it was an STD but I wasnt sure which one.
The clap is Gonorrhea.
