Over A Million US Families Are Living On A Shocking $2 Per Day

More than 1.46 million families in the U.S. are living on $2 or less per day, a new study found.

That's up from the 636,000 households who lived under the same conditions in 1996.

Two dollars or less per day translates to about $60 per person, per month.

While 43 percent of American households receive government benefits, a decreasing proportion of those benefits go to the poor, the researchers from University of Michigan and Harvard University, said.

The study based its definition of income on the U.S. Census Bureau's Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).

It includes such factors as a person's pension and retirements, cash income from public programs, and reported income from friends and family members who are not part of the household.

When the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is included as income, the number of households living on $2 or less per day drops to about 800,000.

Additionally, the study found about 37 percent of the households living in poverty were headed by a married couple, while 51 percent were headed by a single female.

In 2011, nearly 50 percent of the households were headed by white non-Hispanics, 25 percent by African Americans, and 22 percent by Hispanics.

While minority groups do not represent the majority of these households, they're increased the most since 1996, the study found.

How many are rich people with either a crappy year in the market or who took a lot of capital losses to offset their gains? Or else just let their gains ride and lived off of savings rather than selling something and paying taxes on it?

Living on $2.00 per day would be easy for me if I never had to pay for anything like food, clothing, shelter, medical care, child care, and transportation.

No problem,no problem at all.

This “study” is a crock.

Two dollars or less per day translates to about $60 per person, per month.

Don't know of a lot of one-person households. And they're only counting public assistance programs that give out cash into this mix. So, WIC and EBT and free cell phones and free school breakfast and lunch and lowered rent and utilities and free healthcare don't factor into this equation. In other words, it's all smoke and mirrors.

I don’t believe it.

I also don’t believe the economy is getting better.

I don’t believe there’s more jobs.

I don’t believe having a debt as large as the GDP won’t hurt. It will hurt.

I don’t believe shifting the unemployed to disability means they’re ‘employed’.

I don’t believe Obama ...

I don’t believe democrats.

I don’t believe the New York Times.

I don’t believe the Washington Post.

And I don’t believe this story is anything other than a fabrication by some liberals trying to play on pity to get more money from taxpayers.

I believe gas was $1.85 per gallon on the day Obama was Inaugurated and that stupid liberal policies have caused it to go higher.

I suspect the same manipulation of the definition of “homeless families” is going on in this analysis. An unemployed mom and her kid moving in with distant relatives but not receiving assistance is counted as “homeless”, even though they are living indoors.
A million people living off officially $2 a day are part of those unemployed not counted as unemployed living off other people.
