Gingrich pledges support for constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage

Newt Gingrich affirmed his support for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in a detailed response to a marriage pledge by a conservative Iowa group.

In his written response to the FAMiLY LEADER Gingrich, the current leader in the national polls for the GOP presidential nomination, said he would “vigorously enforce” the Defense of Marriage Act. The DOMA bans federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

The former Speaker of the House also told the FAMiLY LEADER that he would sign an executive order restating that federal funds should not be used to pay for abortions overseas and defend the First Amendment right to religious liberty.

Shortly after signing the FAMiLY LEADER’s pledge, Gingrich signed another controversial anti-gay marriage pledge, this one from the National Organization for Marriage. The NOM pledge also calls for support of a constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage.

The NOM pledge also asks those that sign, if elected president, to appoint judges and a U.S. attorney general who “will respect the original meaning” of the U.S. Constitution’s definition of marriage as between a man and a woman, according to NOM’s website, (Ron Paul is the only candidate that has not signed the NOM pledge.), as well as appoint a presidential commission to investigate" reports of Americans who have been harassed or threatened" for opposing same-sex marriage.

Hope this clears things up for those falsely claiming that Newt Gingrich advocates laws for Gay marriage.

Thanks, Jedi. On target, as usual.

This man stands so far above the rest of the field of candidates (including the current holder of the pResidency) there should be no question in any one’s mind that he is the right guy for the job — that is if we were a rational clear-thinking people, or at least a people with a modicum of survival instinct.

Why are we letting Obama set the agenda?

We have bigger issues but we let the Pretender-of-the-United-States make the Republican candidates play small-ball over social issues.

So, we stop all abortions and contraception - whoop-de-do if the economy collapses and we can't feed our children.

Can we grow up, face the real issues and quit being played by a second rate loser like Obama?

If the left destroys America, our culture, us as a God fearing people, then not being as wealthy hardly matters.

Besides, social liberalism and good economics is oxymoronic anyway.

We can’t even get a statute. What is the likelihood of a Constitutional Amendment?

What do you mean? A lot of states have passed anti-same-sex marriage amendments. We need 38 states and 2/3rds of the Congress to pass it. Or the states can do it on their own through a constitutional convention. 29 already ban it constitutionally and 41 if you include banning it legally as well. Still, I think the movement for this amendment better hurry since the liberal establishment is gradually turning people towards accepting gay marriage. It is not going to get any easier to do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_the_United_States#State_law

Out of 28 states where constitutional amendments or initiatives that define marriage as the union of a man and a woman were put on the ballot in a voter referendum, voters in all 28 states voted to approve such amendments.[25]

As of January 2010, 29 states had constitutional provisions restricting marriage to one man and one woman, while 12 others had laws “restricting marriage to one man and one woman.”[30]

It won’t clear anything up for the idiots that believed it.
