Video: A C-5 Galaxy Air Launches an ICBM.

In the 1970s, the Air Force launched a Minuteman ICBM launched from a C-5 Galaxy. Hold on, what!?!?

That was my reaction upon learning that the above sentence is true.

In 1974, the Air Force decided that it could turn C-5 Galaxy airlifters into flying SSBNs. Yup, Air Force planners thought the missile would be tougher for the Soviets to take out with a preemptive strike if it was already aboard a moving target like a C-5 versus sitting in a stationary missile silo.

So, they loaded a Minuteman into a C-5 that parachute-dropped the 60-foot tall missile out of its aft cargo ramp over the Pacific Ocean. After the ICBM fell for a few thousand feet, its rocket motor ignited and the missile flew for ten seconds under its own power. Just to prove it could be done. Wild.

Needless to say, the crazy concept of turning C-5s into flying boomers never made it to the operational stage.

I used to have a lot of fun with the pirate stations on 7415 and 6240, before a.) the VOA decided to drown ‘em out on 7405 and b.) the Interwebz made it easier to be strange/fringe on a broad forum.

It’s now the Voice of Russia. Better news with less bias than the BEEB - except when it come to ‘internal’ issues.

but presented as a gift. Weak, naive administration.

You apparently don't understand what is going on. First a question: Name ONE THING Obama has done to help America? He destroys businesses, is destroying the economy, he is driving oil prices up by preventing oil drilling and the pipeline.

You can easily name numerous things he has done to help the Muslims:

Egypt- Going to Muslim Brotherhood

Libya- Illegally used the US Military to attack and overthrow the government

Iraq- The withdrawal of US Forces is the green light to start the terrorist attacks to destroy the government

I was being too nice.

I have asked myself the same question many times. "What has Obama done while in office that was in the interest of America"?

The only thing Obama has done while in office that was in the interest of America was getting OBL and using the drones to wax al Quaeda/Taliban etc. Should he have decided not to get OBL, it would have been found out and he would have been impeached. Same as with the cancelling the Preditor/drone program. There my friend, is an answer to your question.

We cannot give this imposter another 5 years. I firmly believe he has damaged us severely, even in ways that you and I do not yet know.

Uggh, I don’t enjoy watching people die. Prayers for all involved.

I saw a C130 burn on the ramp at Travis. It was due to an electrical fire, no injuries although it looked bad from my vantage point at David Grant med center.

That, I knew about by the code name. History channel used to rock, before the Hitler fixation and aliens.

Ten years ago, it was the Hitler channel, it seems that there is less Hitler now than then.

Aliens I could do without.

I've read that book.

It's a B52 which we have a lot of but I seem to recall they had replaced the entire fuselage with carbon fiber??

I don't mind being asked to suspend belief but I do have a problem when it's suspended and trampled on and suspended again and then flushed down the toilet.

If you like Dale Brown and I have read his books where he is much better, it's worth reading as it is his first book I think. Dale Brown also once had a commission in the AF, I just looked him up, he had 2,500 hours in a B52 so he should know better and yes, he knows more than me but it is not a trivial matter to replace the the fuselage with carbon fiber; it's not like changing your clutch. My expertise with the B52 is sitting at the end of the runway drinking beer and watching them take off on alert which is really cool and I miss it and Mather Field.
