Hope you get that chance. Hubby just turned under his “cover crop” earlier this week. Not sure what he’ll plant wnen it’s become mulch.

We will have stricter water rules in April. Only HAND water
for 2 hours a WEEK. We’ll be lucky to keep our trees alive
if we don’t get rain. sigh

Jeff Barry ands Ellie Greenwich contributed the song that capped the career of Connie Francis.

Embarrassment time! I’m not conversant with MP3 linking, but if you intervene, the link will work. First, click on the link. This will take you to "The page you requsted was not available”. Go into the URL address, and delete the %22 characters at the very end, right after the mp3 characters. Press Enter, and this should invoke the MP3. I can’t figure out how that %22 got into the URL address. It’s not a part of the href. Thanks to AZamericonnie for coming up with this MP3. Youtube only had it in Japanese.

By late 1964, cracks began appearing in Jeff Barry’s and Ellie Greenwich’s marriage. Jeff’s roving eye had led to other parts of his body roving as well. Writing together was easy, but living together proved increasingly difficult. At Red-Bird, time was running out. Before they knew it, all the label’s artists had defected, and Leiber and Stoller had sold out. Red-Bird was history, and so was their marriage.

Their professional split was headed off by Phil Spector, who reunited them in 1966 to pen material for his latest signing, Ike & Tina Turner. Ellie Greenwich would continue to co-produce artists with Jeff Barry through the spring of 1968, but with increasing frequency, he began to take on solo projects. The few songs he and Ellie wrote during this period weren’t collaborations so much as totally independent ideas fused together. Their song writing partnership was over.

This single was a hit in the UK, but not here. It took four years before an amalgam of groups from Motown made this song a success.

One tune written years earlier by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich ended up providing Tommy James & the Shondells with a major hit in 1966, even if James had to create another group with the same name to fulfill his recording contract with Mafia-owned Roulette Records. (We used to sing, “My baby rubs it with a hanky.”)

Neil Diamond was one of the last artists produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. He has to qualify as their most successful artist, given his stellar recording career. Neil’s music opened the door to Jeff’s subsequent work, as Jeff took several Neil Diamond songs to Donny Kirshner, who placed them with the Monkees and hired Jeff to produce.

But by February 1967, both the Monkees and the producers of their TV show wanted no more to do with Kirshner or his people. For a time, the Monkees’ success continued with the group members producing themselves, but by 1969 their star had gone into free fall. Fortunately, Jeff had maintained good relations with Mickey Dolenz and Davy Jones, and they allowed him back to supervise what turned out to be the last album, which failed to find an audience.

Jeff began seeking out projects he could tackle either on his own or in collaboration with other producers. Jeff appeared as a session musician and singer on Van Morrison’s 1967 debut album “Blowin’ Your Mind!” It’s actually Barry, not Morrison, who sings the famous “sha-la-la” fade on the hit single “Brown-Eyed Girl”. The most significant project Jeff undertook during this period was undoubtedly the founding of his own record label. After inking a distribution deal with Hollywood-based Dot Records in April 1967, he opened a recording studio and set up administrative offices for Steed Records in Manhattan.

The man who would become Steed’s most successful singer now got his turn at bat. Andy Kim, a Canadian of Lebanese extraction, tried his luck on the New York music scene. After casting about for a few years, he hooked up with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich in 1965 for a solitary Red-Bird release. When the single flopped, no one could have predicted that Andy would replace Ellie as Jeff’s song writing partner.

Andy Kim: “How’d We Ever Get This Way?”

The Archies is where it all came together for Jeff Barry. When Donny Kirshner asked him to produce this cartoon studio group, Jeff was up to his neck in work at Steed. But he couldn’t resist the opportunity and made time in his schedule for an initial two week writing and recording session in July 1968. Little did he suspect that he’d return to provide two more seasons’ worth of original material. The soundtrack for “The Archie Show” featured Toni Wine, Bobby Bloom and Jeff Barry on backing vocals, with Ron Dante on lead. He stopped producing the group after Paramount Pictures hired him to work in its music division.

This is where Jeff Barry and Andy Kim rang the cash register. This song made millions for the guys and was the top selling single of 1969. It’s actually a great tune, as catchy as they come, and it deserves respect.

The Archies: “Sugar, Sugar”

I finally made it home....was in an accident on my own street. A young man pulled out of a parking lot RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. There was no stopping on an icy street. *sigh*

We have so much snow that you cannot see around the berms. He said he saw the car behind me, but not me. He said he is house sitting and was driving their Lexus....I hit mainly right where the driver’s door starts. We are both drivable, but I have no right side lights or turn signals. I will not be driving mine for awhile except to get a couple estimates somewhere. Thank you God that we have the suburban to drive. Tentatively we will keep the insurance companies out of it. He called his Mom and we talked. He took pictures of my info and I had him read me his. Then his Mom came and we chatted some more.

I wish I had a hot tub...I would be in it! I can feel stiffness starting. A hot shower will have to do. My seat belt has left its mark...the next few mornings will be interesting.

The work that Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector had done three years earlier paid off handsomely with a hit from an unexpected source in 1969. The tune written for the Ronettes became a hit for the Beach Boys. Note the absence of Brian Wilson, as brother Carl handles lead vocal duties.

It was through his theater connections that Jeff Barry met Robin McNamara, a beer guzzling songwriter who eventually landed a leading role in the Broadway cast of “Hair”. Despite his talent for penning catchy material, Robin was destined to have a short career. He never got near the charts again. However, he and Jeff became running buddies – they moved to L.A. at the same time – and they continued working together until 1972.

This infectious tune from Jeff, Robin, and Jim Cretecos hit the charts in 1970.

Good evening, Taz...((HUGS))...64 years old and first accident. Not my fault, but I knew I couldn’t avoid him, and the sound is horrendous! I took some pictures that I’ll load later.

I always slow approaching that driveway as it is downhill to the street. I don’t take my foot off the brake until I see that the car has stopped. He stopped and I let up on the brake.

So no hot shower tonight...okay.

How is work going? Getting beat up tonight? A full complement? And I keep forgetting to ask...how is your guy in training? Is he still hard at learning the ropes?

Bobby Bloom had been associated with Jeff Barry since the early Sixties when he was sound engineer Brooks Arthur’s assistant on some Barry and Greenwich sessions for Red-Bird. However, Jeff and Bobby didn’t come together as artist and producer until 1969. In 1970 they came up with a collection of blues-oriented tunes, the most notable of which was the “Montego Bay”. Tragically, Bloom died from a gunshot wound under mysterious circumstances in 1974.

Save hot shower for tomorrow..Heat worsens bruising and swelling if you start it too soon.

New guy is coming along.. Not real speedy yet but having er experience makes him pretty sharp.

We are going to be short for quite a while.. We still have one out with surgery and he has had every complication known to man.. Instead of being out for 8 weeks, it’s likely to be 10.

Another having surgery in March.

In 1974, Jeff Barry began working on a project with pianist Peter Allen, but it never got off the ground. It did, however, yield one huge hit for the twosome. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful and a genuine masterpiece.

Some of Jeff Barry’s best production work came from the soundtrack of “The Idolmaker” (1980). But in the Seventies and Eighties he concentrated on writing TV themes.

Theme from “One Day at a Time” (written with Nancy Barry)

Theme from “The Jeffersons” (written with Jeanette du Bois)

Theme from “Family Ties” (written with Thomas Scott)

In 1987, Jeff Barry teamed up with two old Brill Building colleagues to write a masterpiece. Thus he joined Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil for one last song.

Jeffrey Osborne & Joyce Kennedy: “The Last Time I Made Love”

In 1991, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. During the mid-Nineties, Jeff served as president of the National Academy of Songwriters, and in 1998 he was a recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award.

He’s still active today. Regrettably, Ellie Greenwich died of a heart attack in 2009 at age 69. But their music lives on.
