How meaningful can any apology from a Muslim to an infidel be? The Qur'an itself says (8:65):

{حَرِّضِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى الْقِتَالِ}

"Incite the believers to kill."

Islam is nothing if not militant, & incitement is core to its structure.

Kinetic Effects of Prayer in Islam.

The Old and New Testaments concern themselves with the love and teachings of God and Christ while the Qur'an instead expends considerable effort demonizing other religions and the people practicing those religions (see CSPI's Statistical Islam).

As for burning qur'ans, Dr. Andrew Bostom writes:

"Proper Koran Disposal, Apologies, and Murdering Innocent Infidels in Afghanistan"

For what it's worth . . .the likely instigator of these deadly disturbances appears to be the Islamophilic photographer from Agence France-Presse (AFP) mentioned in this story @ TheBostonChannel.com :

Korans desecrated by prisoners

". . .Photographs surfaced purporting to show the damaged Qurans. A photographer for Agence France-Presse said Afghans who work inside the airfield told him they obtained the Qurans there. But the U.S. military said that was unlikely. "

Oderint dum metuant. Haven’t heard that in a while. However you have to smile when the Americans are called imperialists. You send two large armies, ships and supplies, suffer heavy causalities, bankrupt your treasury and what do you have to show for it? Caesar would be amused.

No need to do anything except burn Korans. All we have to do is get our soldiers out of there, burn some Korans, and they will go into a rage and start killing each other.

"Sounds wimpy to me."

Tough audience. Would white phosphorus liven it up?

Did Gen John Allen (USMC) get up and apologize again? What a jackass — especially the way he pronounces “Qur’an” and “Afghanistan” with his ersatz Arabic and/or Dari accent.

No defense of his troops. Only a groveling apology. Note: I would argue that the Marines (at their top levels of leadership) — like their Navy brothers — are even more politically correct than the Army leaders these days.

If I am Gingrich, and I am elected, Gen Allen is retiring 10 minutes after I am sworn in, along with his limp-wristed, USMC commandant, Gen Jim Amos — and a host of other weak, compromised generals and admirals.

Allen, Amos, Jones, all USMC and Casey, USA; the number of politically correct general officers is growing. These people would have no problem with turning the US armed forces on US citizens if political leaders would order them to do so.

“Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for the shooting, saying it was in revenge for the burning of Korans at a US-run military base — an incident that earlier prompted US President Barack Obama to apologize to the Afghan people.”

They didn’t even burn the damned things. They just almost did.

I couldn’t read further due to nausea. What, if anything, was done with the gunman?

Our “leaders” apologize.
