Does Obama Deserve Credit for Increased Oil Production? Hint: No

During his energy-policy speech on Thursday afternoon, President Obama was right when he said that even if we immediately greenlighted all of our energy projects and started to drill, drill, and drill some more, it would still take years for these actions to significantly affect the price of gasoline -- it does take some time to get the production and supply of said projects up and running. But, then the President also turned around and threw out a bunch of impressive statistics about how domestic oil production has only gone up during his administration, there are a record number of oil rigs operating now, etcetera. ...Anyone? Anyone?

As White House spokesman Jay Carney said this week "Oil and gas production in the United States has risen every year since the president's been in office. Oil production is now higher than it's been in eight years."

Industry analysts say production is rising -- not because of President Obama, but in spite of him.

"Today on federal land, the area where the president has control, production in the Gulf of Mexico is down 30 percent. Lease sales in Rocky Mountains on federal lands are down 70 percent," Jack Gerard, head of the American Petroleum Institute said.

He says the president has put 85 percent of the outer continental shelf off limits and overall, is only making 3 percent of the areas under his control available for development.

So, the Obama/White House All-Purpose Strategy Numero Uno goes something like: blame the Bush administration's policies for everything from the terrible economy to the dragging war in Afghanistan, but gloss over and take credit for the long-term effects of the Bush administration's policies when it helps Obama to quell voters unhappy with rising gas prices. Got it.

In this case, at least, President Obama is technically correct that there's no "silver bullet" to bring down gas prices overnight. But one of his favorite new catchphrases is "an American economy built to last" -- so start building it already! Even if it takes five-ten years to get our new resources into the market, we can lay the economic foundations and build an infrastructure to really plan for "winning the future" -- and doing so will start creating lots of new jobs right now.

And now, for your listening pleasure, here's Dennis Prager absolutely stomping on Obama's 'algae' energy policy. Brilliant:

Innovation from private industry is responsible for the boom, the product of a free country with God given liberties.

If you were going to give credit to a man, it might be George Mitchell. Mitchell Energy, based in the Woodlands, TX, drilled non commercial wells in the Barnett Shale (Ft Worth Basin, Mississippian aged clay and TOC rich shale) for twenty years trying to find a formula that would make the play economic. FINALLY the combination of horizontal drilling with multi-staged frac’s in the laterals made the extraction of gas from these nano-darcy permeability rocks possible. The same technology has since been applied to oil rich geologic systems as well, with notable successes in the Eagleford, Bakken, Niabrara, Monterey, and Three Forks formations.

The policies of the Obama administration have been far more restrictive to these endeavors than were those of the Bush or Clinton administrations.

Any increas, any expansion of the economy that is now going on, is not BECAUSE of what Obama is doing (or not doing), but in SPITE of what he is doing (or not doing). He, like George Wallace of a couple generations ago, is not big enough to “stand in the schoolhouse door”.

The world simply ran over George Wallace, just as today the world will run over Barack Hussein Obama.

Resign, Barack, while you still have a shred of honor.

Or don’t. Never believed you had all that much honor anyway.

He resign? You have got to be joking. Honor is a foreign word to him. He thinks he has the election already locked up.

...and if we'd done so years ago, we'd be reaping the benefits now. But the same stupid argument was used by Obama's colleagues in "progressive" thought back then, so we have regular unleaded selling for $4.30/gal.

Exactly.

We need to start now so that in a few yars we will have what we need, instead of saying it will take too long.

They have used this same reasoning for years while they put off doing what is right.

Oil production has dropped 11% on Federally controlled lands since 0bowMao took office. The lands he has control over.

Credit for knowing that goes to Newt Gingrich.

That BP blow-out sure produced a lot of oil. Once 0bama got his $20 billion with a “B” slush fund, plus a “failing grade” for the handling of the crisis, and with the price up where they wanted it, the oil just about disappeared...

We would be at least three years closer to that if 0bowMao had done something when he took office. Low priority I guess.

The turd absolutely lied like a rug this morning when as Joe Wilson said, YOU LIE.. He has nothing to do w/increase, it came from the states of Texas and North Dakota permitting on non federal land.

If as he says, more production will not make a difference, why are they talking about opening oil reserve, if it makes no difference? SHOW, MAKE BIG SHOW, WHAT A TURD

I’ll bet anyone a ten spot that Buckwheat has never changed the oil on his car, that Buckwheat wouldn’t know where to find the dipstick to check the oil level in a motor and that if you sent Buckwheat out to buy a quart of oil, he’d go to the grocery store and come back with a quart of vegetable oil.

Any takers?

Yes. Back in 2010, Rick Perry went over to China and lobbied the Chinese leadership to invest in Texas oilfields. Low and behold, China's national offshore oil company is investing over $2 billion into South Texas shale oilfields, to the tune of 20,000 new jobs in Texas, and many dozens of new wells that did not previously exist.

Did Obama go over and convince the Chinese to invest billions into American oil and gas holdings? Nope. As much as I dislike Perry, he busted his butt lobbying the Chinese and it's paying off - a lot of that Chinese money is going to stay invested here in Texas.
