What began as an idea to promote healthy and positive role models for queer youth, their families and the community nearly 15 years ago has given rise to one of the most robust and longest-running queer youth leadership award programs in the country.

Over the years, hundreds of youth and allies have been nominated and awarded, including many prominent schools, school officials, organizations, elected officials, community organizers, educators, and LGBT and allied youth alike. With so much community support and involvement, QYLA has not only become a dynamic LGBT youth award program, it has become a beacon for the vision of a community that fully empowers, supports and nurtures its youth, as a whole.

That's so gay. So religious based youth activities have been banned from public schools to be replaced with what? A youth organization that is based solely on the sexual proclivities of those youths that is facilitated by adults is very disturbing.

an idea to promote healthy and positive role models for queer youth

The best idea would be to first stop being queer.

Nifty!
We can start saying ‘Queer’ again?

A dictionary link:
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/queer

******************
queerness n.
Usage Note: A reclaimed word is a word that was formerly used solely as a slur but that has been semantically overturned by members of the maligned group, who use it as a term of defiant pride. Queer is an example of a word undergoing this process. For decades queer was used solely as a derogatory adjective for gays and lesbians, but in the 1980s the term began to be used by gay and lesbian activists as a term of self-identification. Eventually, it came to be used as an umbrella term that included gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people. Nevertheless, a sizable percentage of people to whom this term might apply still hold queer to be a hateful insult, and its use by heterosexuals is often considered offensive. Similarly, other reclaimed words are usually offensive to the in-group when used by outsiders, so extreme caution must be taken concerning their use when one is not a member of the group.

Well, that’s just Gay.....

Thanks for the link to the definition of a “reclaimed” word. I’ve wondered how some words are are allowed to be uttered by a certain group of people but otherwise considered to be hate speech if used by others. How clever these modern linguists are!
