CHEYENNE — State Rep. David Miller, R-Riverton, has seen the national debt rise above $15 trillion and protest movements grow around the country. Wealthy Americans are fleeing the country, he says, and confidence in the dollar has taken a hit around the world.
If America’s economic and social problems continue to escalate and spiral out of control, Miller said, Wyoming needs to be ready. So, he’s introduced legislation to create a state-run government continuity task force, which would study and prepare Wyoming for potential catastrophes, from disruptions in food and energy supplies to a complete meltdown of the federal government.
It would even look at the feasibility of quickly providing an alternative currency in Wyoming should the U.S. dollar collapse entirely.
Wyoming’s Department of Homeland Security already has a statewide crisis management plan, but it doesn’t cover what the state should do in the event of an extreme nationwide political or economic collapse.
The task force would include state lawmakers, the director of the Wyoming Department of Homeland Security, the Wyoming attorney general and the Wyoming National Guard’s adjutant general, among others.
Miller said he didn’t anticipate any major crises hitting America anytime soon. But Wyoming, which has a comparatively good economy and sound state finances, needs to make sure it’s protected should any unexpected emergency hit the United States.
“Things happen quickly sometimes — look at Libya, look at Egypt, look at those situations,” Miller said. “We wouldn’t have time to meet as a Legislature or even in special session to do anything to respond.”
Miller said the task force would look at whether, in the event the dollar loses value entirely, Wyoming should issue its own state currency or rely on old U.S. currency that would still have value.
While Miller said that doomsday scenario is unlikely in the short-term, the dollar has been losing value for years, and a gridlocked federal government has been unable to deal with enormous budget deficits.
“If we continue down this course, this is the way any society ends up — with a valueless currency,” he said.
In recent years, lawmakers in at least six states have introduced legislation to create a state currency, all unsuccessfully.
The legislation, House Bill 85, is expected to be debated on first reading in the House today, Miller said. The original bill appropriated $32,000 for the task force, though the Joint Appropriations Committee slashed that number in half earlier this week.
Miller said he hasn’t heard of any other states that are taking such a step to prepare for the worst. But he doesn’t want to wait for them to act first.
“I don’t represent people in Illinois or New Jersey. I represent people in Wyoming,” he said. “And I want them to be protected from any catastrophic events that may beset the rest of the country.”
He is right.
When (not if) things turn bad, the states that are prepared will have served their citizens greatly. Our Federal bungling bureaucracy isn’t holding up their responsibilities.
Unfortunately, the Fed is likely to try to take away from states that are prepared.
Believe or not, I’ve been considering re-locating to Wyoming for some time now. I’ve grown disenchanted with the left coast (WA state 8 years, CA before that for 20). However, watching the usual pattern of libtards moving into Cheyenne to begin trying to destroy that area of the state gives me pause. But regardless, the day may come that righties will need to concentrate within a certain area, and this may be one of the better ones.
Contingency plan, unless Yellowstone blows Wyoming off the face of the earth.

I think any money could be better spent teaching how EACH family or home could be prepared.
What will store & what till NOT.
What amounts of water you need to have on hand.
What medical supplies you need to have on hand.
Actually lots of this info is easy to think of by yourself. It just takes some time.
I don’t think any state should create the illusion that the STATE will step in & help you directly.

Probably one of the *most* important things that can be done is for states to be prepared to mint their own currency.
I'm thinking that this is why this representative is pushing for action. Looking at Illinois, Michigan, California; he is probably trying to do something legislatively that will prevent the Feds from raiding Wyoming to bail out California. I wish my representatives in Washington State had the foresight of this man; but, instead, they are focusing on the real urgent problems of the day like "gay marriage".
Move to South Dakota. No state income tax. Right to work state. Shall issue state. Low cost of living. High quality of life.
Though you should be aware; average income is lower in SD and weather is interesting. The combination tends to keep people responsible.
Recommendation is to move to the western portion of the state where my personal unscientific index of freedom rates highest. Stay away from the Democrat enclaves of the state where there is a deep rot.
I believe the libs have been doing this for years. This is why states that used to be "red" are now "purple" or going "blue". They did the same thing in Orange County, CA, which used to be conservative until the left decided to concentrate on moving a lot of lefties into the county, turning it to the left in order to get their stranglehold on the State government.
It is one thing I wish we would emulate on the right. Pick an area, state, region, and start moving "right"-minded people into it in great numbers.
Grew up in Minnesota. Knew South Dakota well, as a younger man I played in a rock band throughout many cities. (Rapid City was a blast!)

From James Wesley, Rawles: Giordano Bruno identified a trend that has been developing informally for many years: A conscious retrenchment into safe haven states. I strongly recommend this amalgamation, and that it be formalized. I suggest calling it The American Redoubt. I further recommend Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, eastern Oregon, and eastern Washington for the réduit. Some might call it a conglomeration, but I like to call it an amalgamation, since that evokes silver. And it will be a Biblically-sound and Constitutionally-sound silver local currency that will give it unity.

Now that you're considering locations for riding-out-the-storm living, western South Dakota is a place you should seriously consider. With planning and attention to detail you can live well and be prepared. No guarantees other than if the country starts falling apart metropolitan/liberal areas are going to be hell.
Besides, SD always can use another another good rock band!

Our national currency and any proposed state currencies will fall in order to balance with currencies of trading partners that we have trade imbalances with. You either trade useful products for useful products, or you eventually go into irreversible debt and collapse.
Want a higher dollar? Get the young men to work, and let them start producing a great variety of useful goods. For example, abolish the federally-backed, local-yocal zoning laws against manufacturing anything on large, private lots in remote rural areas. Want to keep the current debt regime and local-yocal regulations going against young men who want to work? Then fall. No sustainable revenues for you, until this process has completed.
One guy, at least, who seems to grasp what’s happening in the U.S.
