The Possum Republicans
NY Times ^ | Feb 27, 2012 | David Brooks

Posted on 02/29/2012 9:56:32 AM PST by bkopto

All across the nation, there are mainstream Republicans lamenting how the party has grown more and more insular, more and more rigid. This year, they have an excellent chance to defeat President Obama, yet the wingers have trashed the party’s reputation by swinging from one embarrassing and unelectable option to the next: Bachmann, Trump, Cain, Perry, Gingrich, Santorum.

But where have these party leaders been over the past five years, when all the forces that distort the G.O.P. were metastasizing? Where were they during the rise of Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck? Where were they when Arizona passed its beyond-the-fringe immigration law? Where were they in the summer of 2011 when the House Republicans rejected even the possibility of budget compromise? They were lying low, hoping the unpleasantness would pass.

The wingers call their Republican opponents RINOs, or Republican In Name Only. But that’s an insult to the rhino, which is a tough, noble beast. If RINOs were like rhinos, they’d stand up to those who seek to destroy them. Actually, what the country needs is some real Rhino Republicans. But the professional Republicans never do that. They’re not rhinos. They’re Opossum Republicans. They tremble for a few seconds then slip into an involuntary coma every time they’re challenged aggressively from the right.

SNIP

First they went after the Rockefeller Republicans, but I was not a Rockefeller Republican. Then they went after the compassionate conservatives, but I was not a compassionate conservative. Then they went after the mainstream conservatives, and there was no one left to speak for me.

Moderate Mitt-ercup basically won Detroit last night and He won’t win that area in the fall. Districts 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 14.

The big difference is that the protesters don’t believe in governance. They have zero tolerance for the compromises needed to get legislation passed.

I can accept compromises. If we want to eliminate ten government programs a reasonable compromise would be to eliminate four of them and cut the funding for the remaining six by 20%. But the RINOs' compromise on eliminating 10 programs always seems to be to boost the spending by only 25% and then adding three new programs. That's not compromising - that's surrendering with some conditions.

Note to David Brooks, RINO in Chief on TV:

I challenge you to go & live for ONE FULL YEAR on the border with Arizona, or any place that Sheriff Arpaio or Gov Jan Brewer can arrange for you.

You need to see first hand, with your own eyes, apparently, how bad the illegal immigration situation is on our Arizona border.

Until then, you are ranting with flaming Liberal words alot of nonsense.

You don’t know what you are talking about.

You are in NO danger behind your gated walls & doormen in New York living quarters.

Until you have spent a minimum of a year right in the midst of the problem, you have nothing cogent to say about any of it, IMO.

Arizona did NOT pass a law that was ‘beyond the fringe’.

SHAME on you, you are beyond ignorant about which you speak.

Somebody please mail this guy his membership card for the Democrat Party. I’m tired of him being called even a RINO.
We also finally need a Conservative Party. It is time. We need one before the 2014 Midterms to gather strength to defeat the Rats in 2014..soundly. We will have a lot of work to do to clear up the mess.

Where were they when Arizona passed its beyond-the-fringe immigration law?

When the newspaper of record is reduced to publishing a college paper's undergraduate screed, is it any wonder the pages are only a fraction of their former size?

They’re Opossum Republicans. They tremble for a few seconds then slip into an involuntary coma every time they’re challenged aggressively from the right.

I actually agree with this statement. He just should have stopped after the words challenged aggressively, or he should have included, They slip into an involuntary coma every time they are challenged aggressively from ANYONE, right or left.

The only single solitary thing on the mind of a RINO is his big fat taxpayer funded paycheck and pension. That is all. And if sleeping with the loony left and communists will make him more money, he will do it cheerfully.

All of Congress is a den of thieves. Left/Right definitions are nonsense and just a ruse. They are all out to loot the United States for all it has and get what they can get before everything collapses.

If Romney wins, if Gingrich, Santorum, Perry wins, it will make not one bit of difference. Illegals will still flood in. We will still borrow billions from China to give to crackpot countries all over the world. We will never produce our own oil even though we have more than the Arabs. Pot will still be illegal fueling the drug wars and kingpins. Abortion will still be legal.

And most important of all, government will still continue to grow and grow and grow and take more and more and more of our money and freedoms. Nothing will change without force no matter what happens or whom is elected.

The politicians on both sides have multimillion dollar interests in salaries, pensions, legalized bribes, and insider trading investments and they do not give a sh#t about the rest of us.

The only good thing about the Kenyan man-child is that he is to stupid and gauche to be tactful about anything he does. It is right out in the open. “I am going to ‘take over’ (fundamentally change) this country.” and he will. And all the corporate types and mealy mouthed RINOs and idiot lefties, who 'love' Obama BTW, will lose much more than I personally have ever had to lose.

It is very much like a wolf getting himself elected to be sheepdog. "I wont eat you. Really I wont.", he says to the white sheep. "I'm only going to eat the spotted ones. I promise...hehehe, yeah, I promise man, I do, cross my heart and everything." hehehe

You cannot save fools from themselves. You just can't. Oh well...

I saw Brooks on a show on CSPAN with a few other NYC liberal elites and he said he admired Obama a lot (which tells me he voted for him).

He believes that Obama should be allowed to govern as he sees fit, without opposition, because that would be rude and uncooperative in these troubled times when we should all be pulling together yada yada yada.

I'm telling ya the guy's an Obama supporter.

Brooks should stick w commenting on the state of Obama’s “pant” crease; it’s one of the few things he truly understands.

You are right on. I could not say it any better nor believe it any different. Nothing changes when the government is totally 100% corrupted. Only a total revolution & new start is the option. Unfortunately it will be a drip drip to the loss of all liberties.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I could not get the post to enlarge so as to see if it really was canned possum. And my magnifying glass shows garbled writing.

As a youngster I often went with my grandfather and the dogs hunting possums at night (and was later dubbed “Possum”). After many requests my grandmother baked a possum for my grandfather and me. It was awful tasting. Just horrible.

If it really is possum in that can, I wonder how they made it palatable.

I have a good friend who sends me this crap from Brooks all the time including this one. Last night he was bemoaning the fact that his beloved party was dead. Taken over by far right radicals who were destroying the country. I asked him who he voted for in 2008, already knowing the answer, O’Bama. And who he was going to vote for in 2012, again I already knew, O’Bama. Then I asked him if he had ever voted for our GOP Rep Dan Burton, and he told me he would never vote for someone like Burton. Then he surprised me by saying he was disgusted with how far to the right Lugar had gone to try and get the TP vote this time and that he thought he might give Donnelly a look in the Senate race. I told him he could stop bemoaning the loss of his party because he had one. It was the Democrat party and he should embrace it. He didn’t get back to me on that one.

Brooks really ought to change his voter registration. He is a Democrat in all but label, only. His pretense that the Republican Establishment grovels before its conservative base is a laughable one, albeit revealing of the mindset of the Progressive GOP. Were it up to people of Brooks' kind - East Coast, socially-liberal secularists with delicate sensibilities and as often, revealingly soft hands - conservatives would be forever cast out of the Republican Party.

The result would be two dominant political parties, one slightly left-of-center and the other very much so, just as is the case in so many European countries. And look how well that has worked out for them.

But Europe is of course so much more refined and cultured than America, isn't it, Monsieur Brooks? Each Molotov cocktail and every overturned car in the ancient cobblestone streets of Greece or Pairs virtually screams "class". Well, class warfare, actually but that's where the object of your political envy is taking us these days.

I'm sure that David Brooks is more than happy to jet to the Old World whenever the opportunity happily presents itself, if only to escape the sights and sounds of the déclassé and the gauche who populate the hinterlands west of the Hudson and south of the Chesapeake.

When Mr. Brooks decides to visit the Continent again, may I suggest he make a trip to one of Europe's many spectacular cathedrals, not so much to admire their soaring architecture as to perhaps observe that Europeans themselves are not making much use of them these days, and that fact might just have something to do with the current state of their societies - and increasingly, of ours.
