President Obama: Apology to Afghans 'Calmed Things Down'
ABC News ^ | 29 Feb 2012 | DEVIN DWYER

President Obama said his formal apology to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Korans by U.S. troops last week has "calmed things down" after the incident sparked an outbreak of violence across the country.

"We're not out of the woods yet," Obama said in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Bob Woodruff at the White House. "But my criteria in any decision I make, getting recommendations from folks who are actually on the ground, is what is going to best protect our folks and make sure that they can accomplish their mission."

Obama's letter to Karzai reportedly expressed regret for the apparently inadvertent burning of the Korans, which took place on a U.S. military base in Afghanistan, and pledged to prevent future incidents and hold accountable those responsible.

The president's critics and some members of the military have questioned the appropriateness of the move, given the subsequent murder of two U.S. military officers at the hands of an Afghan inside one of the capital's secure ministry buildings.

I worry that he actually believes this about himself. Thinks he makes a positive difference on events. Scary thought.

It does bring to mind the question:

What is the proper method of disposal of a damaged Koran?

I'll bet burning is one of them.

I found an answer to my own question:

Disposing of Unusable Copies of the Qur'an

As far as old and unusable copies of the Qur'an are concerned, it is not permitted to burn them unless there is no other way to dispose of them.

The great Hanafi Imam, Imam Ibn Abidin (may Allah have mercy on him) states: "If a copy of the Mushaf (qur'an) becomes old and it is difficult to read from it, it should not be burnt in fire. This is what Imam Muhammad (m: student of Imam Abu Hanifa) pointed out and this is what we take. It will not be disliked to bury it.

It should be wrapped in a pure cloth, and a Lahd grave (m: grave that has a incision in the side wall, customary in hot climate countries where the earth is solid) should be dug, because if a Shiq grave (m: grave with a straight opening, common in cold climate countries due to the earth being soft) is dug and the copy ofthe Qur'an is buried, it will entail the soil falling on top of the Qur'an which is a form of disrespect, unless a slab is placed as a roof. .. " (Radd al-Muhtar, 5/271)

In light of the above, there are two methods of disposing of an unusable copy of the Qur'an:

(1) Wrapping it in a pure piece of cloth and burying it respectfully in a place where people (normally) do not walk about In cold climate countries (such as the UK), one may dig a Shiq grave, but a slab should be placed first and over it the soil.

(2) Fastening the Qur'an with a heavy object like a stone and then placing it respectfully in flowing water. If one is able to implement the above two methods, it would not be permitted to burn the copy of the Qur'an. However, if the above two methods are difficult to carry out, then one may burn the Qur'an and bury or drown the resulting ash.

“calmed things down”

If they were calmed down it’s because they were out of breath from rolling on the floor laughing at him.

Yea right. Those dead American servicemen lying on the ground looked real calm. They weren't even moving. They didn't have a care in the world.

I think the Taliban used it as an opportunity to try to egg their supporters into an impromptu (Vietnam-style) Tet offensive. That it fizzled out so quickly is a good sign - the clearest indication yet of the Taliban’s near-death condition (in contrast to all the defeatist rhetoric circulating in the past year or so). The Tet offensive killed 4,000 Americans. This Koranic Tet offensive has killed perhaps a dozen. The bottom line is this - the only people who participated in the riots are the Taliban’s supporters, and only a few thousand of them participated in a country of 30m people. In contrast, anywhere from 300K to 500K Vietcong were involved in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War. These vermin boast of loving death as we love life. The truth is that they love to boast of loving death while doing everything to avoid it, including avoiding attacks on American civilians at every opportunity, for fear of massive retaliatory attacks by our military.
