Obamas host dinner to honor troops and mark end of Iraq war

By DONOVAN SLACK | 2/29/12 5:01 PM EST

Preparations are underway at the White House for a 200-person dinner to honor troops who served in Iraq and to mark the end of the Iraq war.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will host the formal affair in the East Room Wednesday. Included on the guest list are 78 service members from all branches of the military. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, also will attend.

“The dinner list was compiled by the Senior Enlisted Advisors of each military service branch to ensure that it was reflective and representative of all U.S. states and territories, ranks, service components, and backgrounds,” White House officials said. (Full guest list below)

The first lady will sit next to Kim Felts, a Gold Star wife from Fayetteville, N.C., whose husband was killed in 2006 when an explosive detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad. Felts has since helped 45 other surivors in her area “find their new normal,” officials said.

One veterans group has already complained that the White House dinner is not enough – the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America is calling for parades and a national day of action in cities and towns across the country to welcome troops home.

“The White House Dinner symbolizes our nation’s gratitude and it’s a welcome gesture—but it's just a start. The entire country can’t pack into the East Room to say 'thank you' that night,” IAVA founder and executive director Paul Rieckhoff said in a statement.

Pentagon officials have said they believe it would be inappropriate to hold welcome-home parades until troops are brought home from Afghanistan as well as Iraq.

“Included on the guest list are 78 service members from all branches of the military”

Wow. They are going to invite a whole 78 people. Selections will be totally political and create the right backdrop for a political event promoting Obama’s political campaign.

Using these veterans as stage props for a reelection performance is despicable.

Where was his gratitude all those years he fought against the military as they were fighting far from home.

I swore to “fight all enemies foreign and domestic.”

I’d be declining that invitation without reservation.

My! How things have changed in my lifetime. I can barely remember the parties and celebrations at the end of WWll. Marvelous celebrations of a great victory. Now we celebrate losing.
Third time since WWll. No wins. Two loses. One tie.

I do not know whether to cry, laugh or just puke.

Somehow I don't think that this administration will ever get around to holding a parade for the returning troops. That would be too unsettling for Obama & his beard, err wife.

Someone going to this should ask Obama why he’s cutting benefits for vets, active duty members and their families.

Obama boasted he was against the Iraq War even when everyone else at the time, including Hillary, Gore and T. Kennedy, were convinced Saddam had WMDs and was a serious threat to use them against us. Hussein Obama just didn't give a crap what Saddam was up to.

"I'll stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq. I'm the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president I will end it"--Barack Hussein Obama

Can’t imagine any of the invitees supping with the enemy.
Can’t imagine any of the invitees having an appetite around these cretins.

Orders are orders. No branch of the services - not even the Navy taxi drivers - gets to operate without that basic understanding.
You think these warriors have been given the choice of attending or not? You don’t get the choice of attending a speech/photo-op in the field, you are simply told you will show up, and you do.
Unfortunately, meeting with your CinC comes under the heading of legal orders.

They will attend as ordered, be seated well below the salt, and leave quickly without speaking much.

My daughter has a friend who is in the he Army he will graduate high school in June and start his career. He said that he is not allowed to degrade “Obama” it's orders. He did say that he feels the same way I do about him but that was it. I admired his dedication to the Army.

There are still some who understand the credo of the forces and of defending the country at risk of their life.

Thankfully.
