Newt Gingrich: Romney backers trying to 'brainwash' voters
ChiTribune ^ | 2-29-12 | Finnegan

Posted on 02/29/2012 7:32:58 PM PST by VinL

With his presidential candidacy newly invigorated by donations from a casino billionaire, Newt Gingrich accused Mitt Romney's Wall Street supporters on Wednesday of trying to "brainwash" voters into backing the former Massachusetts governor.

"It's just Wall Street pouring money in to try to buy the election," Gingrich told a few hundred supporters Wednesday evening at a rally here in northern Georgia.

"In fact, I think eight of his top 10 sources are people who got money out of the U.S. taxpayer. So in a sense, the next time you see a negative ad, you're watching your money come back to brainwash you on behalf of the people that took your money in order to stay rich."nomination....

Gingrich's use of the word "brainwash" carries special resonance for Romney. In 1967, his father, George Romney damaged his campaign for president by saying that on a visit to Vietnam, he had undergone a "brainwashing" by U.S. officials about the war there.

Responding to Gingrich's remarks, Mitt Romney's spokesman Ryan Williams said, "When typical Washington politicians like Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich get desperate, they resort to false and dishonest attacks like these."

Gingrich went after Santorum, too, at the Gainesville rally.

"We have two fine candidates who aren't visionaries," he said of both Romney and Santorum. "One of them runs around saying he's a manager. And the other goes around saying he's essentially a very fine traditional big-government union conservative, who voted against right-to-work, and voted for every single minimum-wage increase the unions wanted. But neither of them offers bold changes."

Santorum's campaign had no immediate comment.

Well, thank you, everyone who answered me!! I had a brief..I mean brief..thought about selection between Rick and Mitt and thought Rick would be better...but this seals it..I am for Newt, even if he is pulling in the tail end by the time he gets to Texas! My vote will not go to the others, regardless.

When I hear Mitt say the others use False and misleading statements about him, it makes me want to puke.

Mitt in this campaign is the FATHER OF LIES, he owns that trademark and he spent millions to earn the title.

Sic em NEWT.

Actually, you were clear. I just had a brain freeze and replaced into your post Pennsylvania in the place of Michigan. I was still stuck on Santorum’s union votes as Pennsylvania senator and had Pennsylvania on my mind.

But, yes, I am curious how many democrats actually did the deed and crossed over in MI.

I have done that before in an open primary, but guess what! You have to do more than simply cross over and vote in an open primary. You have to be elected or accepted as a delegate that evening in your precinct meeting. You have to get to the county convention as a delegate from your precinct, before you can actually influence a delegate count, for a presidential nominee.

I am thinking only the crazies go that far. Like me. LOL!
Yes, I went as a Democrat delegate to county to help influence the delegate count in the ‘08 election. Me! A radical conservative!

About 10% were Democrats. Their intention wasn`t to become delegates. Just to help Rick win because they think he`s easier for Obama to beat.

I recall when this was happening. I have family who works at FedEx. Very disturbing that Santorum would align with Ted Kennedy. Newt is right to bring this up so the voters know the record. I hope Newt can stop Santorum because of his ties to the unions. Rick's big government ideas are not the way for us to go again.

“In fact, almost every entry on the all-important first page of “Santorum” results — the one most users see — is laden with nasty, sometimes vulgar attacks”

None of the “Urban Dictionary” results were on google a few weeks ago.

Tht’s the FIRST HIT you get on google.

Sick.

It’s deliberate.

Rick should come out for indexing the minimum wage for inflation. That way he wouldn’t have to vote to increase it so much.

You are so right. In reading the radical left wingers blogs and sites, they are celebrating to go up against Rick. They hope by doing so, to keep the focus on social issues. They are the most despicable people on the web. It is very difficult to read the words in which these far off progressives post about Rick, Newt, Palin or any other conservative which will take issues to their radical social engineering agenda.

Rick was rate very badly over and over by the union associations, fwiw.

But I think he appeals to the working man.

And, as usual, the leftists are misguided. They think that the social issues (abortion, gay marriage, etc.) are winning issues for them because they and everyone they know support those things. They can't imagine anyone NOT being turned off by a candidate espousing traditional values.

The truth is that when social issues are "in play," the GOP actually does better. Every time we run a "moderate" candidate who takes social issues off the table (e.g., Gerald Ford, Bob Dole, John McCain), we lose. George H.W. Bush won when social issues were a major part of the 1988 race (e.g., the Pledge of Allegiance controversy, Willie Horton, Dukakis' ACLU connections and the death-penalty debate question?). Clinton and Perot made 1992 all about the economy, and we lost.

Newt was making a veiled reference to the “brainwashed” line that sunk the career of Romney’s fathers political career.

I don’t expect someone like you to understand. You understand so little.

Thanks a lot, CC. I wish you would say that to someone with clout around here to their face.

I don’t like it very much.

I already made your point. The union does not support Ricky, BUT IT ISN’T FOR HIS LACK OF TRYING.

Yes, candidates do and say some stupid things in their career. Rick is just far better at it than most.

Newt, IN OFFICE, is unmatched for conservative cred.
