An increasing portion of students in the United Kingdom looking for a way to pay for their tuition are turning to prostitution, according to a new paper by a British medical student.
The problem may be particularly acute among medical students, who generally go to school longer, accrue more debt and have less time for paid employment, according to the paper by Jodi Dixon, who is studying at the University of Birmingham.
Dixon pointed to a study of about 300 British university students, in which 10 percent reported knowing a student who had worked as a prostitute or escort in 2010. That's up from about 6 percent in 2006, and 4 percent in 2000, Dixon said, a rise that coincided with an increase in college tuition fees.
"With escalating debts, students in the United Kingdom may view prostitution as an easy way to get rich quick," Dixon wrote in her article, published today (Feb. 28) in journal Student BMJ.

I bet those free Birth Control pills come in handy.
Some of those prostitutes don’t need birth control because they don’t have a uterus.
Diary of a Call Girl (OK, she was a PhD candidate, but still).
I guess there isn’t as much upside going to work at the DMV, er, hospital in the UK.
It’s nasty work to pull back the burquas and deliver the spawn who will someday cut your throat or bomb your supermarket.
The UK and all Lefties are suicidal assh*les.
I am not liking the sound of this. Getting a bit queezy.
“Dixon pointed to a study of about 300 British university students, in which 10 percent reported knowing a student who had worked as a prostitute or escort in 2010.”
So, 30 people said they knew one such student. That could translate in to one such student for the entire sample. This isn’t science, this is yellow journalism.
At least they’ll learn to treat their own venereal diseases.
The Brits really need a bunch of whore doctors like a hole in the head. Geezy peasey! What is wrong with people???
Do you think they will be eligible get a “courtesy rate” from fellow doctors if the get STDs?
Given what the female Georgetown studen said a few days ago, it appears that American college women will just give it away for free.
You better stop making sense!
You read my mind.
All three hundred could know the same student who turns tricks.
What an utterly appalling sate of affairs that a supposed First World country, Great Britain for God sake, would be so squalid that a woman studying to a doctor would have to resort to this. These people are done for.
I wonder how the veterinary students, um...make ends meet...
Oh, not those blasted “report knowing” statistics! Utterly meaningless tripe. One notorious student hooker at a med school could account for 10%, 20%,. . . “knowing” as student who had turned to prostitution.
The feminists love that form of meaningless questionaire as it creates a false impression of the prevalence of rare things they can use to push their agenda.
I never dated a girl who went to college that I liked. My favorite girlfriends were all just high school graduates or college dropouts (one such I realize now I should have married, but foolishly didn’t; what a nice girl she was! No issues, no agendas. I was the man and the leader, and that made her happy. Doesn’t get any better).
My advice to young men today is if you can afford not to have your wife work, then stay away from college girls.
What a ridiculous report. This so-called ‘debt’ that is turning them to prostitution needs to be explained as it is laughable compared the debt acrued by American medical students. In England university fees are 9000 pounds a year, but students don’t have to pay it up front. The govt. pays it and when they have completed their course and they start earning above $40,000 a year they start to pay it back on very favourable terms with very low interest. If they don’t earn enough, they don’t have to pay it back.
If they can’t cope with that kind of deal before hitting the street corners in desperation I don’t fancy their chances of managing a multi-million pound budget when they become a GP!
