Finland to buy air-to-surface cruise missiles from Lockheed Martin in $237 million deal

HELSINKI — Finland's Defense Ministry says it has approved the purchase of air-to-surface cruise missiles from U.S. aerospace and defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. in a deal worth €178.5 million ($237 million).

The ministry declined to specify how many of the AGM-158 JASSM-type missiles it would buy.

The long range missiles will be installed into the fleet of Finnish Air Force F-18 Hornet fighter planes.

So we’ll sell weapons to people who don’t need them and others who are perpetually bad dates/relationships.

What are we? Abused husband syndrome?

Maybe they still remember the visit Stalin made in 1940. That did not work out too well for Stalin.

It worked out for Stalin in the long run. By 1945, the Red Army had conquered a big chunk of Finland. And poor Finland, its opposition to Stalin and the Soviet Union forced Finland to ally itself with the Axis powers after June 1941 thereby costing it support from the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.

It worked out OK for Finland, too. They lost 10% of their land but were outside the Iron Curtain. They were also the only country to pay their “ war debt” to USSR of $ 600,000,000 and their WWI debt as well.

Everyone who lived in the captured area left.

The Finns are the same people who butchered the Red Army in 1940 with Suomi submachineguns and captured Mosin-Nagants.

Always wanted to visit there but there’s a sauna in my building and I hate snow & anyway Finlandia vodka is available locally.

There are Finnish women in Finland, and if you play your cards right, in the sauna with you. It is definitely worth it.

I guess you can call defending your country butchering. Many invaders died by the knife. Venturing into the forest was dangerous.

Sako and Valmet supplied some of their service weapons. They still do.

If you captured a Russian soldier you got to keep the red star on his uniform. The first ones were metal, later they were made of cloth.

There are many lakes along the southern border so few routes into Finland.
The Russians broke through the middle border area using overwhelming force in 44-45. The Finns joke the people in this area are lazy and they lost because they took their time getting to the front. (lots of regional humor in small countries)

I forgot, every Finnish soldier had his knife and used it. Don’t they call it “ukko pekka” or something?

When the Finns counterattacked, “Their machineguns barked, their knives were loose in their sheaths, and they did not take many prisoners.” - Time magazine, 1940

Finnish humor: “So many Russians! Where will we bury them all?”

I also forgot that in Finland the saunas are co-ed. May have to go there after all.

"Ukko Pekka" (trans. "Old Man Pete" after beloved ex-president) was the nickname for M39 version of Mosin-Nagant M/91 rifle.

The Knife ("Puukko") is a different beast altogether.
