Tea Party groups in Indiana have made him their No. 1 target, saying the silver-hailed senator has strayed from Republican principles too many times.
They are backing state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, creating Lugar's first Republican primary challenge since he took office.
Another complication: Lugar's startling revelation that he sold his home in Indianapolis and bought one outside Washington shortly after winning his first election to the Senate three decades ago.

I don’t even care about his residency issue. I will never vote for him no matter what BS Lugar, Obama’s best buddy, says.
He needs to go. He is also too old. The pasture is awaiting him.
Lugar has been a thorn in the side for conservatives for long enough; it’s time to send him packing.
Agreed, I am not voting for Lugar. He needs to be sent packing.
Dick Lugar does have a lot of positive feelings built up from his early years. He was brilliant as mayor of Indianapolis - came up with and was able to pass the “Unigov” plan which allowed the entire county to vote for mayor.
This kept Indianapolis under Republican mayors and it didn’t go the way of Cleveland, Detroit, etc. Obviously at 80 yrs old he needs to be retired. It’s kind of sad when a guy won’t just give it up when the time comes.

Like I’ve posted several times here on FR: I voted for Lugar in the 1996 GOP POTUS Primary.
From what I’ve seen, he lost his bearings with that loss.

It is high time that Senator Richard Lugar was given the heave ho by Indiana conservatives. He may have been “Richard Nixon’s favorite mayor,” but that was over 40 years ago, and in his 35+ years in the Senate he has become every liberal Democrat’s “favorite Republican Senator.” Lugar has heretofore avoided a primary challenge, but not this time, and conservatives brought a heavy gun: state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who is a solid conservative who nonetheless knows how to play well with others (so he won’t lose in the general) and already has statewide ID.
Republicans will win a Senate majority this November, but it won’t serve us for much if moderates with Potomac Fever like Lugar hold important chairmanships. It’s time to send Lugar packing—I wanted to say “back to Indiana,” but since Lugar hasn’t lived there in 30 years, it will be a much shorter trip for him to Washington’s Virginia suburbs.
One big reason Lugar wants to stay is that if he wins again, he’ll become Senate President Pro Tempore. If he loses, it goes to Orrin Hatch. If we take out both, it goes to Thad Cochran.
Lugar, then Hatch, then Cochran? And our prior president pro tem was Ted Stevens? Gee, our “conservative” Senators don’t exactly age well, do they? I see that Grassley comes next—at least someone there has stayed conservative after 30+ years in the Senate.
I saw Dick on tv touring the tornado devastation over the weekend.
He really looks, talks, and moves every bit of his 80 yrs of age.
WTF an 80 yr old guy is looking for another 6 yrs on the job is beyond me.
I don’t like Cochran, under the radar establishment Senator. I have more respect for Hatch.
But I fully support Thad for Pres Pro Tem in 2013!! And I hope Grassley holds the job in 2015.
Anyone but Lugar or an ancient Hawaiian Democrat.
And I sure hope that scum Leahy never has the honor of holding that position.
Actually, Grassley has been in Congress longer than Lugar and Hatch (he’s a Watergate Baby, where he succeeded the colorful and elderly H.R. Gross, who was always railing against government spending and a thorn in the ass of the establishment — he’d be a superstar today if he was in Congress). At the time of his election in 1974, Grassley was the ONLY Republican to win a federal office from IA, with the Democrats having flushed out all of the old timers. At almost 79, Grassley is 4 years older than Gross was when he hung it up.
As for Cochran, he’s been in Congress even longer than the aforementioned 3, having first been elected in 1972 (and along with Trent Lott, the first two Republicans to survive reelection from MS since Reconstruction). If I’m not mistaken, only Bill Young of FL is the lone Republican to now have been in Congress longer than Cochran.
I think when I woke up and realized Lugar was on the wrong side was back in the ‘90s when the Democrats and the RINO establishment were trying to foist Clintonite ultra-RINO William Weld on the country as Ambassador to Mexico. Weld had publicly declared war on Conservatives, but what he hadn’t counted on was the Chairman of the committee voting to approve his nomination, one Jesse Helms. Lugar was all happy to rubber stamp that abomination Weld until Helms let Weld have it (and Lugar, for that matter) and shot that down like an expert marksman. It was absolutely beautiful. I miss Senator Helms. :-(
Leahy might get it at some point in the 2020s. Alas, unless the VT GOP grows a pair and dumps his sorry ass, that Stalinist jackass will probably stay put until he goes belly-up. Ditto for Inouye.
Lugar did a marvelous thing for Indianapolis when he was mayor by somehow getting Unigov passed.
His Wash DC career doesn’t quite match up.

Unigov was 42 years ago. That’d be like a politician in 1970 running for reelection talking about what he did in 1928. Unfortunately, it may have only staved off an inevitable rodent takeover of Indianapolis. The current Mayor, Ballard, might end up the last Republican for a long time. I still can’t believe Indy has a Black Stalinist from the Satanist death cult representing it in Congress.

I see Unigov as keeping us from turning into Cleveland, Detroit, etc for about 40 yrs. That was a major accomplishment.
As far as Carson, the Republicans have districted all the “takers” into one geographic slot, and that keeps 3 or 4 other districts completely safe for Republicans. The downside is when you do that, you get the worst of the worst in the rep. but only one of them.
When a Democrat replaces Ballard (and it will happen sooner or later, given Marion County’s recent electoral history), Republicans might as well try to undo Unigov so that the Republican suburbs in Marion County can escape the liberal Democrat yoke.
The Dems would never let that happen if they got control. All the property taxes come from the townships, right?
