New York Times editor Jill Abramson gets “big footed” by President Obama and Barnard “trades up”

Barnard College and President Obama: rude (and yes, lame.) And ready for the irony? President Obama is said to want to discuss women’s issues and the women’s agenda…and yet “big foots” an accomplished woman!

Read below and tell me what you think.

Here are the facts: Barnard College asks NY Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson to be its commencement speaker. Giving a commencement speech is lots of work and means giving up a weekend – but Abramson graciously accepted. Abramson is a big deal – she is the first woman Executive Editor of the New York Times – so this is a big deal for Barnard. And yes, having a woman Executive Editor of the New York Times is a big deal for women of all ages. She is blazing the trail. Barnard was very lucky to get her as the speaker and my guess is that others wanted her but she turned them down to speak at Barnard’s commencement.

Then some time later the White House calls Barnard College and says President Obama wants to give the Barnard College commencement speech. Barnard jumps at the chance to have the President of the United States, “trades up” and Abramson gets “big footed” by the President.

Of course Abramson can’t criticize this - so I will for her and for other women.

This is positively rude. I think less of Barnard for “trading up” and of the President for “big footing.” He could easily find another college to speak at (I bet he has dozens of open invitations) and Barnard ? Well…I would be embarrassed to be part of Barnard.

An Obama administration official confirmed on Friday that the White House had called Barnard to offer the president as the commencement speaker.

This a real clunky headline by Greta, but she's right to jump on this. Obama sees an opportunity to pimp his reelection effort and shoves an accomplished woman out of the way so the showboater-in-chief can ride the Sandra Fluke wave.

Politically, much ado about nothing. Like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I always thought Jill Abramson was a snotty, affected, creepy liberal.

I suspect she supports Obama all the way.

If only it were so. As Rush pointed out, this is from Page 1 of the Democrat playbook. Concoct a purely bogus issue, count on the MSM to give it a lot of air time, and use it to bludgeon women with the "See, Republicans hate all women" meme. Guess how it will sway undecided women, particularly those who don't pay attention, don't want to hear the truth, or who can't think critically. We've got Democrat friends and that is PRECISELY how they see this issue.

The central issue is freedom of conscience guaranteed by the First Amendment. The phony issue is Republicans want to deny all women contraception. There's no logical nexus between the two, but that doesn't stop the Dems from creating one.

Obama's team concocted this hoax and is going to keep it front-and-center up to the election. Count on it.

I think he should invite “THE HESELF” to Georgetown Univ and lecture those in attendance of how easy it is to get ahead in government work by availing oneself of the various contraceptive devices whose usage HIS United States Government is willing to dictate as a cutting edge, cost cutting program.

Yes they will and if the GOP does not fight back aggressively they will get steamrolled again and LOSE. I am not holding my breath that McConnell, Boehner and the GOP nominee have the fire to brawl with the dims....

“GOP fight back aggressively” — stop it! You’re killing me! My sides are splitting.

Unless by “fight back aggressively” you mean Boehner continuing to chew out Limbaugh. Then expect lots more fighting.

IIRC, Jill Abramson co-wrote a book with Jane Mayer (Strange Justice) that wrongly smeared SCJ Clarence Thomas.

I view her as the enemy, not as an "accomplished woman."

I have a college student graduating this spring. I certainly hope Barry doesn’t plan to pull this crap with other college commencements. Anywhere Barry goes must create a nightmare of security for the innocent folks who want or need to be in that place when he is there also.

I cannot think of a worse collection of left-wing women than Barnard College.

My recollection is that standard procedure is for the president to give three commencement addresses per year, typically one at a military academy, one at a public university, and one at a private college or university. There have been exceptions but that's the usual routine.

At least that's the way it was explained when President George W. Bush spoke at the college from which I graduated long ago, and generated a huge firestorm of protests by current professors and students. I was disgusted with the conduct of current people at my “alma mater” — there were major problems decades ago and they've only gotten worse — and I played a small role in helping some conservatives in the national media find background about the college for articles on the incident.

Obama is getting a medal of distinction from Barnard too.

I expect Barnard would not have "traded up" if it had been a GOP president. NOW would've made hay over the attempt to "big foot" a powerful woman and used it as an "GOP is anti-woman" talking point. The press would've left on it for a 24 hr cycle.

I'm glad Greta has the fortitude to bring light to the situation.

Shame on Obama for using a women's college to advance his political career in an election year. Shame on Jill Abramson for quietly taking a backseat, disrespecting herself, because she supports Obama and his agenda. Shame on Barnard for gleefully being used.
