Obama: Fuel-Efficient Cars an Answer to Gas Prices (Yea, just run out and buy a $42,000 Volt)

President Barack Obama says higher auto mileage standards set under his administration and better cars built by a resurgent U.S. auto industry will save money at the gas pump over the long term, a counterpoint to Republican criticism of his energy policy.

In his weekly radio and online address Saturday, Obama said Detroit automakers are on track to build cars that average nearly 55 miles per gallon by 2025, doubling current mileage standards.

"That means folks will be able to fill up every two weeks instead of every week, saving the typical family more than $8,000 at the pump over time," he said. "That's a big deal, especially as families are yet again feeling the pinch from rising gas prices."

During the past several weeks, Obama has been eager to appear aggressive in the face of rising gasoline prices even as he reminds audiences that there is no simple, immediate solution that will reverse the current spike in prices.

"What's happening in Detroit will make a difference. But it won't solve everything," Obama said. "There's no silver bullet for avoiding spikes in gas prices every year."

Volt production has been suspended due to lack of demand.

Detroit automakers are on track to build cars that average nearly 55 miles per gallon by 2025,

First of all, I think that statement is a bold faced lie....only in the EPA convoluted policy babble is this happening

To avg 55 MPG, that means cars will have to avg way more than 55 MPG since some will avg far less..

I'm far from the expert but only a few cars today are getting near 40 MPG and now where near 55 benchmark

We are going have to reinvent the internal conbustable engine to achieve that benchmark or simply drive 100 cc engines in death traps....

LOL LOL I am an owner/operator courier (self-employed) and couldn’t get a loan for $42 grand if I held a gun to someone’s head.

You are quite correct.

What Obama means is that the government has mandated that cars get 55 mpg by 2025.

In liberal minds, regulations are more real than the laws of physics. It’s actually very cool. Pass a regulation and then leave it up to others to figure out how to “make it so.”

Thanks tobyhill.
[Zero] said Detroit automakers are on track to build cars that average nearly 55 miles per gallon by 2025...
...because by that time, the laws of physics will cease to apply on the streets and highways, just as they already don't in universities and the Demwit Party.

No, they’re not an answer to high gas prices. In fact, they could make gas prices worse.

Efficiency causes an INCREASE in consumption of resources. It is called Jevons Paradox.

Increased consumption causes shortages.

Shortages cause increased prices.

If you want to drive the consumption and prices of gasoline down, lower CAFE standards and get rid of these stupid hybrids.

It appears the battery has a useful capacity of about 10 kwh.

Multiply your price per kwh by 10 and there’s your answer.

Anywhere from 40 cents to $5.00.

..............According to a website I read the other day, it would use approx. $1.50 a day to recharge @ 9 cents per KW Hour..........................

But not for long. As coal fired plants are being forced to close, and an increasing electrical mix of high cost wind and solar is forced to come online, coupled with cap and tax, electricity is slated to skyrocket in the near future.

The fuel cost savings might just go pooof!

If worse comes to worse, I’ll just ride my bike or walk.

That is exactly what Odinga and the left want.

For the conservatives to simply cave in and give up.

Not me.

I'm sure as hell not going to walk the eight hour round trip it would take for me to get to work and back or try to carry eight bags of groceries on a bike. Try to bring home three sheets of 4 x 8 plywood on your bike. Good luck.

That’s a big deal I save $8,000 dollars at the pump, but it costs me $40,000 dollars for the car.

Nice move Richard Weed.

Dear Zer0 - 1st muslim dude,

I understand what you’re saying, but it looks to me like life is going to be a whole lot more simple in the future at the rate we are going now.

You know it could be a case of buy groceries from what grocery store?

Who is going to be selling 4 x 8 plywood when no one is buying or building anything?

We are going backwards at an alarming rate.

I thought we were discussing the current gas prices not the total destruction of the planet.

I’ll try to stay on topic.

My scenario wouldn’t require the total destruction of the planet, just total destruction of life as we know it in the USA, and we are certainly on that road doin’ about 75...
