Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich accused “the elite media” of negligence for focusing on the contraception controversy that Rush Limbaugh Limbaugh escalated last week instead of reporting on the issues relevant to the campaign.
“I am astonished at the desperation of the elite media to avoid rising gas prices, to avoid the president’s apology to religious fanatics in Afghanistan, to avoid a trillion-dollar deficit, to avoid the longest period of unemployment since the Great Depression, and to suddenly decide that Rush Limbaugh is the great national crisis of the week,” the former House speaker said...on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
The controversy erupted after Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke testified before Congress to lobby for the availability of birth control. Limbaugh, who referred to the woman as a “slut” while commenting on the issue during his radio show, apologized for his comments on Saturday.
Gingrich said he is glad that the conservative radio commentator apologized but said there is no debate about access to contraception.
“This is the most fundamental assault on religious liberty in American history,” he said, referring to President Barack Obama’s new requirement that insurance companies provide coverage for contraception for employees even at Catholic institutions that object to birth control. “It’s not about access to contraception. It is a question about whether or not a religiously affiliated institution should be coerced by the federal government.”
When host David Gregory asked Gingrich about winning Georgia on Super Tuesday, Gingrich shrugged and said, “It is the biggest state in terms of delegates. It’s very hard for one of the major candidates to not carry their own state and continue to move forward.”

Gingrich is amazing on these set-up programs. NBC/ABC/CBS all had their trap questions set for him, and he took the traps and sprang them on the questioner.
The NBC guy became flustered, Mr. Bob on CBS tried to ignore the implication that he was part of the Obama campaign, and the former Clinton butt-boy on ABC began ducking and dodging.
I watched all three and Newt got a TKO on each network.
Gingrich would absolutely DESTROY Obama in a debate. It’s worth nomination him just to see that.
Newt used a rule that I always preach, when you are asked a hostile got-ya question by a interviewer who is trying to ‘get you’, don't treat him like a unbiased judge, turn the questions around and question him.
Gregory :” Do you agree with what Rush said about ...? ”
Newt:” Do you agree with Obama when he ...(put much worse example here)? Why arent you asking about that?”
That is how you do it.
Yes, that was a tour de force performance by Newt! He immediately went on the offensive. Man, are we going to need that in the general election. Santorum just got killed by Chris Wallace today.

On any policy issue- one never catches Newt flat-footed.
You wouldn't do that with say Brian Lamb interview on CSPAN.
But Gregory, who I don't especially dislike, makes his living on putting those he interviews on the defensive, And recently he is doing that to Republicans while throwing Democrats soft-balls. He had Debbie Wazmann Schultz on after Newt and gave her an especially easy time.

I didn’t understand sick’s Brian Lamb comment myself.
And I agree with you that ALl these media lefties are part of the same biased effort and are dangerous. After all, David Gregory single-handedly cost a fine tea-party conservative a US senate seat, catching him by surprise with a seemingly throw-away question on Meet the Press.

Exactly right. Newt turns it back on the press. This is the second time that I know of that Newt has backed up Rush. Santorum said Rush was “absurd” in his statement. Rick folded like a cheap suit when asked the question. IMHO Rush picked the wrong candidate to back. GO NEWT GO!
Exactly..and I find it troubling that Republicans are quick to attack their own.
