It’s selling so slowly that General Motors is going to shut down the plant that builds it for five weeks, but critical accolades for the Chevrolet Volt keep coming in.

The plug-in hybrid has been named 2012 European Car of the Year, along with the versions of it called the Opel and Vauxhall Ampera. A panel of Journalists chose it from a group of 35 cars vying for the title. The Volt previously won the 2011 North American Car of the Year and World Green Car of the Year awards, as well as being being named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year.

Chevrolet Volt named 2012 European Car of the Year

Just as meaningless as the Nobel prizes awarded to Obama and Gore.

Well since Europe is what, a fraction of the size of the US, I guess that proves it sucks for America.

Sad to hear that Opel is involved in this sham. My ‘64 hot-rodded Opel Manta was the most fun car I’ve ever owned!

How do you go from having absolutely no authority to speak on automotive questions to less than that?

Ask Motor Trend's editors. They seem to have succeeded.

Psst! Hey! You guys can achieve a historical first if you award the 2012 Peace Price to the Chevvy Volt!

That would sure make the cover of Time Magazine!

Something got lost in the translation. They didn’t mean car of the year, they meant JOKE of the year.

They tested both cars on Top Gear and neither won any praise at all. Both made it about 40 miles and they had to wait for an 8 hour charge.

Please excuse me while I don't give a crap.

Now that right there is funny.

Europeans would pick up what a dog leaves on the lawn, call it a Tootsie Roll, and eat it.

This beast is a hybrid not an all electric. It can continue on gas — running the battery down will not strand you which is good because it’s easier to carry a gas can than a new battery pack.

It succeeds in being a modern curiosity. Whether anybody in Europe will want it, that is another question.

The cheapest gasoline in the UK is $8 a gallon. Driving distances are way shorter. The Volt probably makes sense there, especially since they’re subsidizing electric vehicles as well.

The Euro-PEONs gave an ward to the most absolute LOSER of a car!

And the Euro-elitist attitude toward Americans really shows you just of educated, but unintelligent they truly are!

If those idiotic, moronic peons could give arch-Muzzie, death -worshiping terrorist, Yassir Arafat (LOSER!), a Nobel Peace Prize should it be any surprise in as to their choice of cars to award and elevate?

Once Eurabia is turned completely over to the Muzzies in about a generation or so the peons won’t have to worry about such trivialities!

Glad I read the thread comments because I was about to post the same thought.

This is just politics. These journalists want the Volt to succeed so they vote for it. It's the idea of the car (and all Obama has invested in it) that matters to them, not whether it is any good.

Wonder how many Volt's are seen in and about the 'hood' around 63rd and Stoney or 114th and Michigan, on Chicago's South Side? Or even, Pilsen area on the West Side? Bet between the three, you could not find one.

Wonder why Gov't Motors' Sales-Manager-in-Chief isn't telling the blacks and latino's they should buy one, in order to help ween the country off of oil?

Oh....DUH....never mind, I just realized that was a stupid question. The obvious answer would be why, when they can just steal a car with a full tank of gas and then leave it in the middle of the street when it runs out of gas. And, then go steal another one.

OR, they are waiting for obama to G-I-V-E them all one, with their food stamp and welfare cards.

I’d rather have the world’s smallest car, the Peel P50, than a Dolt or a Leaf.

The 2012 European Car of the year just idled its plant and laid off 1,300 workers.

The sole purpose of this award is to encourage us dumb Americans to use greener technology.

We are after all, dumb hicks cowboys, that need to be educated. We are the underclass and would be peasants if we were still in Europe.

/sarc

It is plain stupid to buy a Volt at so many levels for so many reasons. It is the Solidra’s of automobiles.
